Another double homicide from 20 years ago solved by DNA.

However, a recent search found a match to one of McCraney's relatives who had voluntarily submitted their DNA to find out more about their ancestry.

Suspect, 54, is arrested for cold case murders of two girls, 17, who were found shot dead in the trunk of their car 20 years ago after one of his relatives submitted their DNA to a genealogy website and it matched traces found at the scene

Hopefully, many cold cases will be solved as DNA profiles from tested rape kits are uploaded to CODIS and also if the laws on statute of limitation for felony sexual assault are eliminated.

The backlog of untested sexual assault kits "perpetuated what I think is a seismic injustice against sexual assault survivors," Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance said at a news conference Tuesday morning.
In addition to addressing specific cases, the evidence collected was added to the FBI's Combined DNA Index System (CODIS).
A report released Tuesday by the Manhattan District Attorney's office states that 18,803 DNA profiles were added into CODIS as a result of the tested rape kits, which will help track criminals across state lines.

At Tuesday's news conference, Vance said that "dedicated funding streams are necessary to end the backlog but they are not ... sufficient," adding that he believes states need to change their laws.
Vance called for states to eliminate their statues of limitation for felony sexual assault, mandate timely rape kit testing, require the testing of all backlogged rape kits and call for an annual state-wide inventory of backlogged kits.

45 year-old double murder of Clifford & Linda Bernhardt in Billings Heights, Montana has been solved. Parabon Labs used genetic genealogy to match DNA recovered from the crime scene. According to police the killer was a man named Cecil Stan Caldwell, who died in 2003. He and Linda Bernhardt had been co-workers.

Linda and Clifford Bernhardt, both 24, were found dead in their Billings-area home in November 1973 in a case that would stymie investigators for more than four decades

No motive was given. Caldwell died in 2003 at the age of 59, according to his obituary in the Billings Gazette.

The case had remained cold until 2004, when DNA was discovered on evidence gathered at the crime scene. Over the course of the 45-year investigation, law enforcement eliminated 80 people as possible suspects, through DNA testing.

Todd Barket, 51, was arrested Wednesday and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the 1998 slaying of Sondra Better, a 68-year-old woman working alone in a consignment shop in Delray Beach, Florida.

Barket's prints appeared in a fingerprint database in December because he was applying for a job as a certified nursing assistant.

In 1998, Better's killer left "a bloody, evidence-laden scene behind" when they stabbed and bludgeoned her to death. Droplets of the suspect's blood leading from Better's body to a cash register and out the door as well as the suspect's fingerprints on a decorative ball were found at the scene. Nothing matched in a national database in 1998.

When Barket applied for the job, his fingerprints came up as a match for the suspect in the killing. Police later tracked the man down and nabbed his DNA, which also came back as a positive match on Tuesday for the killer's DNA found at the crime scene..

This is such great news for the daughter of Sondra Better who never gave up hoping to hear of a DNA match.

Justice can finally be served to the murderer of Mrs. Better who was bludgeoned to death while working alone at a consignment shop over 20 years ago.
