What a confused world little AJ lived in (and out of) in his short life. Foster home(s?) and neglect with his birth Mom. Was even half of his life anything that resembles functional? Perhaps he was more secure in foster care than at his birth Mother’s “home”. Mom’s record of relapse is evident in DCFS records and following documented “treatment” instances, she becomes pregnant (shortly thereafter, even). I’m wondering how that affected him, emotionally. Did the little guy have behavioral challenges? I wouldn’t be surprised at all, considering what he’d been through. Could his birth parents cope, especially if they were “using” and did his behavior worsen? (NOT victim blaming a five year old!) It’s possible birth parents did not have the skills to deal w/AJ and things got out of hand, went too far.

Thinking of Dad’s on-camera comments yesterday, asking AJ to coming home and telling his missing five year old that “he wouldn’t be in trouble”. Dad was playing for the cameras, you can see him making eye contact, aware that they were there. SM(creaking)H.
The kids born with opiates that I work with have MAJOR behavioral problems. Also RAD, ADHD..etc. I call them my alphabet kids. I think the children of this opiate crisis, are the real victims and the least talked about!
Also the foster care system in my county is totally overwhelmed by these poor kids! It is not unusual that a child with such behaviors is in his 10th home by 3.

Yes, and if he had problems, which he likely does, his being kept away from early intervention services has my hinky meter flying.

I'm imagining a relapse, mom being high and forgetting she gave him meds-and then gave him more meds causing an od.

Even with an addiction, if she really wanted to recover, she would do whatever it took to keep herself clean and keep her kids.

I've noticed, no where has it been reported when anyone outside the immediate family last saw AJ.

I hope they can track their cell phones. It might help locate the boy.

Father is back home

Investigators are following up on “hundreds of tips,’’ Crystal Lake police Chief Jim Black said Saturday. “This is still an ongoing investigation,’’ Black said.

Black said no arrests have been made, and the father, also named Andrew Freund, was back home after he was escorted away about 1 p.m. Saturday with plainclothes police officers. He was not in handcuffs when he entered a black unmarked police car with them.

Officers inside the police station about 1:15 p.m. declined to say why Freund was there or if he was under arrest.

But shortly before 5 p.m., Freund left the police station out its back door, carrying a little white bag. He lit up a cigarette and began briskly walking to his home, a short distance away.

“Nothing definitive yet,’’ he told a reporter who asking what happened at the police station and did he learn anymore more about the whereabouts of his son. “Pray for the safe return of my son,’’ Freund said.

Freund kept walking as reporters followed asking how he’s been making it through the last few days.

“Hell. It’s been hell. Hell on earth.’’

Police have said they don’t believe the 5-year-old was abducted, but the father and the boy’s mother were not cooperating with the investigation. Black described the whole situation as being “disturbing.”

“The fact that both parents have stopped cooperating with us certainly raises our suspicions,” Black said.

A neighbor said he had come out of the house and hugged a woman who came to lay flowers down near the home and Freund asked the neighbor to pray.

Black said the evidence they have collected so far “doesn’t support an unknown offender, and there is no evidence to say an abduction occurred.”

Police are following up with anyone known to have had any contact with AJ or last saw him.

Parents of missing Crystal Lake boy 'AJ' Freund have stopped cooperating, cops say; father back home after police escort him to station

One thing that seems odd to me is that the father said "AJ, please come home..." To me, that leads someone to believe that he walked out of that house of his own free will and that he can walk back in if he wanted to. But...the dogs did not pick up any scent of AJ leaving by foot. Therefore, the statement of the dad makes no sense. Also, if they believed he were abducted, then saying "AJ, please come home" would make no sense either because he would be held against his will. KWIM?

He was reported missing Thursday morning. Trash pickup has been reported as Friday. IMHO there’s no connection.

He could have been missing much earlier. Didn't the neighbors say they had seen no sign of the boy all week? We had an unusual snowstorm last Sunday with several inches of snow and then Tuesday it was 70. Wouldn't it be normal for two kids who don't yet go to school enjoy playing in the snow or enjoying the first or second 70 degree day since last fall? Yet, there was no sign of them. And a holiday tomorrow. This kid would be expected to be seen by other family members if for nothing other than an Easter gift, a basket. It could be he's been missing longer and they knew they couldn't produce him for the holiday and reported him missing.....

I wonder when extended family last saw him. Aunts, uncles, grandparents.

I agree. If something went down in that house, I'm wondering if their other son witnessed it. I know he's very young, but sometimes even young children can say that "Daddy/Mommy hurt so-and-so..." I wonder if they've questioned him at all. Just a thought.
If he's in foster care, which was stated earlier here... then yes, I think LE should question him before he forgets anything.
Sad life for the little one, now his brother is probably gone. :(

The way the cops yelled into the house something about “we’re just here to help you” seems odd. Also would someone mind giving me a few context clues about where to find why the dad was disbarred? I know we can’t openly discuss it..

I take it they're being "extra special" nice to him.... -- but it's clear they (LE) have questions that probably aren't being answered. Imo.

I thought the same thing about family wanting to see him for Easter. So far, I've not seen any other family members. It would seem they would be at the house as a support system. Also, attorney stated, the mom would be staying with friends. I wondered why relatives didn't foster the child? That is usually plan A with DCPS.
So, so many questions....

So far, this case stinks to high heaven. Addicted mother, perhaps Dad is too, past reports to and child removed what appears to be twice by DCS, no evidence child left house or anyone broke into house, both parents attained lawyers and they have stopped co-operating.
Sadly, none of these signs are good.
MOO, MOO (and a very deep sigh)

I apologize if this theory has already been mentioned. This thread is moving faster than I can keep up.

A couple of years ago we were visiting family when we received a call my 2 year old niece had been found unresponsive and rushed to the hospital. We were given no other details. The next day we received a phone call that she was doing fine but had gotten into her mothers "pills." I am not sure what exactly she took, but it did a number on her and I suspect it was not a run-of-the mill prescription. If Andrew was born with opiates in his system could he have found something of mom's and overdosed? Perhaps the adults panicked because of past experience and now we are looking for this sweet little boy.

With the odd dynamics...age and father being a lawyer....I wonder how they met? Did he represent her in the past? JMO

Someone earlier said he was her divorce lawyer. I cannot link it and do not take my word for it but she had a husband who she and he never had kids and who she is divorced from.

The pictures I have seen of this little boy, on here and World News. He does not look healthy at all to me. He’s gaunt.
I’m surprised we haven’t seen a more clear photo. I’ve seen two in MSM and both are with a hat, dark and don’t clearly show his face. In this day and age, who doesn’t have a million pics of their kid on their phone?

Someone earlier posted the mother has more photos on her FB page.
I admit I haven't gone to look.
Although I probably should.

Eta : Mom's FB page is gone; afaik.

In Kylee Willis' mom's FB page.. there were photos of an older sibling with many bruises , taken at the hospital. Crazy that it wasn't reported by the hospital staff...

As far as LE declaring it a crime scene ... is it possible there was no blood evidence --but that cadaver dogs were used , and picked up a scent ?
