Robert Fabian Trial to start Monday

@Niner

The article is short. This is the most important bit:
CALDWELL COUNTY, Texas (Big 2/Fox 24) - This Monday in Caldwell County, the trial of Robert Fabian will finally begin after months of postponement.

A highly publicized trial out of Alpine, Fabian originally charged with tampering with evidence, is now charged with the murder of Zuzu Verk.

The rest of the article just recaps the case briefly.

My summary of the rest: ZuZu went missing in October 2016, her skeletal remains were found February 3rd 2017. Robert Fabian, her boyfriend, was arrested along with his friend Chris Estrada. Both men were charge with evidence tampering and concealing a human corpse. Estrada has been found guilty of evidence tampering. Fabian is now charged with Zuzu's murder.

Another article with mostly the same info:
(KTSM) - The murder against a man accused of murdering his girlfriend and burying her in a shallow grave outside of Alpine, Texas will go to trial Monday after months of postponement.

As KTSM reported, Robert Fabian is charged in connection to the October 2016 disappearance and murder of Sul Ross State University student ZuZu Verk.
Estrada pleaded no contest to charges related to Verk's death in April 2018. He will be sentenced after Fabian's trial. Fabian is facing first-degree murder, his trial will be held in Caldwell County, in Lockhart, Texas.

The murder trial for Robert Fabian, the man accused of killing his girlfriend Zuzu Verk in 2016 and burying her body in a shallow grave, began Monday morning after being postponed several times.

Fabian's first-degree murder trial is being held in Caldwell County, south of Austin in Lockhart, after being moved away from Brewster County, according to KTSM.com.

Verk was reported missing in Oct. 12, 2016 by her boyfriend, Fabian, and her body was found in Feb. 2017. Neighbors said they heard the couple arguing the night before she was reported missing.

Fabian is on trial because he used his friend’s credit card to buy clothes at a Dollar General, which matched the material Verk’s body was wrapped in, according to the affidavit.

Jury selection began Monday in the murder trial of a man accused in the 2016 slaying of Zuzu Verk, a Fort Worth woman who attended Sul Ross State University in Alpine.

Verk’s remains were found in plastic painter’s drop cloths in a shallow grave near Alpine in far west Texas, according to the arrest warrant affidavit.
...
Fabian told police that he and Verk began to argue during their dinner at his apartment the night of Oct. 11, 2016, and that when the disagreement grew “heated,” Verk left between 2 and 3 a.m. The affidavit said Fabian called Estrada twice about 3:15 a.m. the night of Verk’s disappearance and stayed in contact with him throughout the day.

Estrada told police that he went to Fabian’s apartment later that day to paint a table. They decided to drink instead, the affidavit said.

At about 10:15 p.m., the two stopped by a Dollar General store, where Fabian bought three drop cloths, according to surveillance footage. From about 10:40 p.m. to midnight, according to electronic data, Estrada was back at Fabian’s apartment.

From about midnight to 12:20 a.m., Estrada was “at or near various commercial dumpsters in the area,” the affidavit said. Later, Estrada went to a friend’s house.
...
Police searched Fabian’s apartment and found no sheets or pillowcases on his bed. Investigators found one of the three drop cloths, but the other two were missing, the affidavit said.

Opening Statements were today:

CALDWELL COUNTY, Texas (Big 2/Fox 24) - Today, Robert Fabian’s trial officially began as prosecutors and the defense team gave opening statements and began examining witnesses.
...
Geoff Barr, a prosecutor with the Texas Attorney General’s Office, led off the morning giving a timeline of Verk’s life, her relationship with Fabian and the puzzle pieces that will come together.

Barr claims Fabian was angry with Verk in their on-again-off-again relationship, which ultimately led to her death.

Prosecutors described Fabian as being “consumed” with thoughts of Verk and discussed the idea that Fabian staged her disappearance after her death.

Meanwhile, the defense hammered home that there is no evidence to support the claims or the charges against Fabian. Furthermore, the defense team also questioned the legitimacy of the witness that would be presented to the court, saying no one heard or witnessed the alleged murder.

The defense even stated in the first day that DNA had been tested but came back with nothing as no forensic evidence existed in the case against Fabian.

Opening statements concluded Tuesday morning.

Mother, police officer take stand in Robert Fabian's trial

The first witness called was Zuzu’s mother, Lori Verk.

In an emotional testimony, Lori Verk described her daughter as a ‘big personality’ who was ambitious. Lori told the court her daughter was a student at Sul Ross State University, and she had fallen in love with the Big Bend area of Texas.

Lori stated that Zuzu was interested in transferring to Texas A&M to continue her studies. The same week she applied, Lori said her daughter disappeared. The conversation then turned toward Zuzu’s relationship with Fabian.

Zuzu’s mother described Fabian as tall dark and handsome but with an attitude. Lori went on to say that Fabian could be manipulative, arrogant and “was all about Robert.”

Next, the mother recalled the week Zuzu went missing.

She noted Zuzu was very busy and they stopped hearing from her and Lori began to panic texting her “tell us you are alive.”

Lori then recalled reaching out to Fabian who said he was giving Zuzu space. The family then traveled to Alpine.

While there, Lori claims the family reached out to Fabian several times. Finally, when speaking with Robert, the family urged him to contact police for a welfare check and let him know that Zuzu had been admitted to Texas A&M University.

In recalling the saga, Lori credited the Alpine community, as well as law enforcement, for their assistance in searching for Zuzu but recalled no help from Robert in the search.
