"A 29-year-old female journalist was killed during riots in Derry, Northern Ireland, on Thursday night in what police are treating as a "terrorist incident."

According to reports, violence broke out following police searches in Derry's Creggan district, with petrol bombs thrown at police Land Rovers.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland on Friday identified the victim as journalist Lyra McKee, an editor at Mediagazer based in Belfast who covered the lasting effects of decades of violence in Northern Ireland. McKee was considered a "rising star of investigative journalism," according to an announcement of her book deal with publisher Faber, and was named one of Forbes' 30 under 30 in media in Europe in 2016.

Police are treating the killing as a "terrorist incident" and have launched a murder inquiry, according to Assistant Chief Constable Mark Hamilton. The Police Service of Northern Ireland said it believes the attack was carried out by "violent dissident republicans" and confirmed the primary line of inquiry involves the New IRA, which it said "is most likely to be behind this."

Lyra McKee, journalist, shot in Northern Ireland violence - CNN

"McKee, according to literary agents Janklow & Nesbit UK, was born in Belfast, and had written for a number of publications, including The Atlantic and Buzzfeed News.
In 2016, she was named as one of Forbes Magazine's 30 under 30 in media in Europe.
She is the first journalist to be killed in the United Kingdom since 2001, according to nonprofit organization the Committee to Protect Journalists."

I am so sorry to hear about this! It's horrifying how journalists have become targets more and more.

I'm not sure she was specifically targeted. Sounds more like the shooter was shooting just into the group of people. But still a terrible tragedy. She was very talented and skilled.
Its also very sad to see violence like this returning to Northern Ireland.

Police hunt killer of Lyra McKee as leaders unite in condemnation
"A police hunt is under way in Derry for the dissident republican gunman who killed journalist Lyra McKee in an attack that immediately prompted warnings that political violence must not be allowed to take hold in Northern Ireland again."

"McKee was shot during rioting in Derry on Thursday while standing near a police Land Rover. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said the shooting was part of an orchestrated attack on its officers and described it as a terrorist incident.

Police released CCTV showing McKee in the crowd and the man suspected of firing the shots that killed her. Det Supt Jason Murphy said: “The footage also shows the gunman at the corner and an individual picking up something from the ground on the same corner. We are releasing this to encourage anyone with information to make contact with us.”

The two arrested are age 18 and 19, how on earth did they get hold of a gun? Someone older likely put the gun in their hands and sent them out there.

Probably, or they may have acquired it through criminal activity. Many of the nationalist and loyalist groups simply became street gangs after the peace treaty.

As to how they got it, it may depend on whether or not the weapon was "high grade" and thus very difficult to obtain in the UK, or "street criminal grade" and perhaps easier to get via a drug exchange etc.

They were released without charge. A woman arrested has also been released without charge.

I don't understand what you mean.
It might be a reference to the special code language that is used in northern Ireland to describe people:

Republicans: People (significant majority, but not all of whom are Catholic) who want unity with Ireland by mostly peaceful means.
Nationalists: Nearly all Catholic and willling to use terrorism.

and the tribal opposites:

Unionists: People (significant majority, but not all of whom are Protestant) who want to keep unity with UK by mostly peaceful means.
Loyalists: Nearly all Protestant and willling to use terrrorism.

That's the wrong way round though, its Republicans who use violence and nationalists who don't.

That could well be. But...I thought the terms might have flip flopped after the peace treaty: Republicans = supportive of the Irish Republic, not IRA per se?

Nationalists didn't take up violence at any stage though, so I don't really get what the other poster is saying.

The people who shot this journalist would be dissident republicans who don't accept the Good Friday Agreement.

Thanks for the correction on the terms.

'Outpouring of love' comforts McKee family
"The family of murdered journalist Lyra McKee has said a huge "outpouring of love, respect and admiration" had comforted them "through the darkest of times".

"The New IRA said its members carried out the killing."

"A reward of up to £10,000 has been offered for information leading to the conviction of those responsible.
Police said the Crimestoppers reward might help "assist in efforts to get justice for Lyra and her loved ones".

"In a statement issued on Tuesday, Ms McKee's family said: "We know that as our nightmare continues in the weeks, months and years ahead, that we will not be alone.

"To know that our wee Lyra was so well-loved across the globe and by people of all walks of life, is a true testament to her personal philosophy and her vision for the world.

"Know that your continued love, support and sympathy will be our spiritual manna".

Ms McKee's family said they had been overwhelmed by requests for events in Lyra's name.

They added: "We respectfully request that before anyone uses her life or death for any purpose that they consider her legacy of inclusivity and understanding".
