Major damage reported at Best Western Plus Capital Inn motel, and Hawthorne Apartments, and people trapped at both locations; destruction throughout city, according to early reports. Injuries and extensive damage according to Twitter reports @ Jefferson City tornado. Extensive damage near Ellis Blvd. near U.S. Hwy. 54. The damage path is so wide that it's possible that both the State Capitol and the State Penitentiary were hit. All city firefighters have been called in to work; area hospitals in disaster mode, calling back workers. Three dead downstate in Golden City, Barton County. Injuries and destruction reported in SW MO town of Carl Junction, just north of Joplin, where, eight years ago to the day, an F5 twister killed 158. Reports of more tornadoes continue throughout MO and OK; earlier damage in KS as well. Many reports of downed power lines, gas odors, "walking wounded." A night of fear continues. Storms also hit other parts of the state Wednesday night.

In southwest Missouri, three people were killed in the Golden City area of Barton County after a “large and extremely dangerous tornado” was reported in the area.

The tornadoes Wednesday night came eight years to the day after Joplin was hit by an EF-5 tornado that killed 161 people in 2011.

UPDATE: @JeffCityPolice Lieutenant David Williams says there will be a media briefing at 2 am at the Cole County Sheriff's Department, about tonight's storms. He says they are currently identifying location of damage and searching for injured residents.

At least 20 people were treated for injuries in Jefferson City, and no deaths were reported there, Missouri Gov. Mike Parson said Thursday morning.

Jefferson City police Lt. David Williams said later that no one had been reported missing.

Bricks, trees and downed power lines littered parts of the capital Thursday morning.

"Many, many buildings have significant damage, and there's a lot of buildings that have small damage as well. It's very widespread," Jefferson City Mayor Carrie Tergin told CNN.

And no deaths? Remarkable. Miraculous? Maybe.

Wow I'll say, particularly because initial reports had it a five-mile-wide EF-5 (reports today say EF-3). If it had have been that initial strength scores would have died. The one eight years back that killed 160 in Joplin MO was EF-5 I think. This one's lessened strength is a good example of what each measurement, F3 and F5, means. Big difference. The difference between death, and damage.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — The tornado that tore through Jefferson City overnight has been given a maximum rating of an EF-3, the National Weather Service says.

However, the agency said some damage points for the mid-Missouri tornado rated from an EF-0 to an EF-2. This is based on a preliminary damage survey, which is still ongoing, the National Weather Service said in a tweet.
