Sleuthing and discussing the social media of family and friends is not allowed.

As per The Rules: Social Media - Facebook, Twitter, etc ... you may link to and discuss social media of a victim and a POI/suspect.

At this time it is pretty evident that the uncle is at the very least a POI, so his social media may be sleuthed (as y'all have been doing ;)) and discussed. Just do not mention posts by his friends, their names, or sleuth their social media and post about it here.

The Rules are linked in my signature. They have not changed for this case.
 
'Officers located several items of interest a short distance from the home. This item has been tested and there is forensic evidence of 5-year-old Elizabeth Shelley,' the update reads.

Police did not elaborate on what that particular item is, but they did say that the piece of evidence connects Whipple to the child and her residence.

'Some items were then located another short distance away which also shows a forensic connection to our missing 5-year-old,' the statement continued.

Authorities also said that they have 'over 200 law enforcement officers from a dozen agencies including local, State and Federal officers' searching for Elizabeth.

'Empty life'

Bill Whipple said even though the family knew Alex Whipple had problems, his alleged act of violence has left them dumbfounded.

He said his grandson's mother abandoned him at age 5 and disappeared for a number of years. She then reappeared and took him to live in another county.

"All I can tell you is he had an empty life. He had an empty home, an empty life. He was in and out of foster homes, he would run away from them, he wouldn’t stay in them at all. He was always on the run. And these are the things that, after a while, start to wear on you," Bill Whipple said.

He said the family repeatedly offered him help and urged him to go to therapy but he declined. Though Alex Whipple had a difficult life, his grandfather said that in no way justifies his alleged actions.

Bill Whipple said Lizzy's mother had a good relationship with her brother, Alex, and had helped him. She had "no clue" her brother could do such a thing, he said, adding that Jessica Whipple had done everything she could to protect her kids, and did everything she could to survive.

"Lizzy was her whole life," he said.
 
I am so sorry everyone. I literally fell asleep with my fingers on the keyboard sitting in my chair. I only woke up because my fat head fell forward and crashed on my computer.

Utah’s prison population is rising faster than any state but one, despite many reforms
A recent report from the U.S. Department of Justice found the national prison population fell 1.2% from 2016 to 2017. In Utah, however, the population jumped 4.3% — far greater than the growth in the general population.

Only Idaho, at 5.1%, had a higher rate of inmate increase.

In Utah, the inmate tally is climbing despite a long-term decline in property and violent crimes. In 2015, legislators shortened the penalties for many drug offenses and reduced the amount of time someone with a nonviolent conviction can stay in prison if he or she commits a parole violation.

Draper Facilities

Uinta 5 is the prison’s “Receiving and Orientation” unit for males. The building can house 122 inmates at capacity. Newly sentenced offenders, offenders who violate terms of their probation and are sentenced to prison time by a judge, and offenders who violate conditions of their parole and are returned to prison by the Board of Pardons and Parole are housed here initially. While in Uinta 5, inmates' ability to move around, access programming and interact with other inmates is temporarily limited as staff assess each person's needs and behaviors and decided on appropriate housing. Inmates also learn about rules, regulations, the grievance and disciplinary processes, and classification.This process typically can take from one to three months.

While in R&O inmates take a test known as the "Level of Service Inventory" or LSI, which evaluates risk factors, appropriate level of supervision and other useful information. The LSI is used by staff to create a “Case Action Plan” (CAP) for each inmate. The CAP tells an inmate what he is expected to do and which programs he is expected to complete (substance-abuse treatment, sex offender treatment, thinking for a change, anger management, etc.) prior to paroling or otherwise being released from custody.

Information about the missing girl in the Cascade Mountains that you hadn’t heard about. It happened over the Labor Day weekend so I’m sure many people did not hear. She was found safe in about 24 hours.

I mentioned it as an example of how difficult it is to spot even living people within a short distance of where last seen when searching in wooded areas.

I’m not sure how to respond to a message in a closed thread.

I want to clarify about the insanity defense discussions going on. It is SO hard to successfully lodge one of these defenses. His actions surrounding the murder alone make it very unlikely he could win on such a defense. Further, there will have to be a vast amount of expertise that also determines he is insane, which he is not. I wouldn’t be surprised if the defense posits this as their tactic; what other option has he given them? They know he did it so it won’t be a “who done it” type of defense. Rather, it’ll be “yes he did, but here’s why he’s insane and not culpable”. But in my professional opinion (I’m a prosecutor), it won’t work. He’s not insane, he’s just evil.

@riolove77 it’d be awesome if he’d go directly to prison, skipping trial. Probably won’t happen though, he is young & immature & it seems he’s justified his acts of evil.

Hopefully this inspires LE to pick probation violators up sooner than later, when they suddenly go awol, there’s usually a reason.

I am not so sure. I think the professionals need to take their time in evaluating him. The remarks from the grandfather, who knows he did it and thinks he did it to hurt the whole family, seem to indicate that he may have suffered more abuse as a child than we are yet aware of.

Yes but that doesn’t make him legally insane. That’s a different ballpark. He has to have not known what he was doing was wrong. And there’s no way he qualifies under that umbrella. He took steps to cover what he did an was elusive with LE until he got something in return for the info he gave. That is not the markings of an insane person.
