Specialist police will join the search for a Belgian backpacker, missing near Byron Bay, as authorities move across a bushy headland near the town's iconic lighthouse.
Theo Hayez, 18, was last seen leaving the holiday town's Cheeky Monkey's bar about 11pm on May 31.
His distraught father Laurent made an emotional plea for help this week, begging encrypted chat service WhatsApp to grant police access to his son's final known conversations.

“Theo Hayez was asked to leave Cheeky Monkey's bar on the evening of May 31 because he was 'intoxicated' but 'he left quietly, was happy to go and had planned to go back to the Wake Up Hostel', @ReddieNews
on the mysterious disappearance of the Belgian backpacker.”

I think it is obvious Theo wasn't in a good condition that evening.

You see him walking straight into a traffic sign.

He could have felt victim to so many things that evening. Shame on his palls for not watching out for him.

I hadn't realized the footage was so close to his hostel. The 15 minutes to get to the light would have to be a direct route along the beach.... and that actually seems too short from my experience. Walking along the beach at, 5 degrees is not going to be a pleasant journey. Although it was 5 degrees, there are a number of bush dwellers that camp in that stretch of bushland that meets the beach. The locals have no love for tourists, especially in the colder months. 10 years ago, Byron would have enjoyed a more peaceful time during the winter months, but the popularity of Byron Bay has changed that to a full-time tourist location.
Being so close to home, would he risk getting into the water at 5 degrees, fully clothed, with his phone, wallet, and keycard for entry into the backpackers?

I hear what you are saying Aron so I’m now thinking maybe because of the drugs create many psychotic disorders (e.g., schizophrenia) and Theo crossed paths with a crazy.
I’m also concerned Theo took something bad.

That is a possibility, yet he was so close to the hostel, which is far removed from the town center. Most of the displaced people live towards the city for access to the soup kitchen and other amenities. When I was volunteering at that soup kitchen, the contrast between the residents that have housing and access to work and money, and people that access services and live in the bush is quite extreme. Yet, they don't seem to head down that way. Theo's hostel was on the way out of Byrom Bay towards Mullumbimby, just before the industrial area.

Sadly I think he fell into the water.
Well, around the location of the hostel, and that part of Byron Bay doesn't have any cliffs or somewhere to fall from, it's beach shallows that slowly progress to depth. If he did walk up to the lighthouse, which after being kicked out of a nightclub for intox seems highly unlikely, then yes, he could've fallen.

Thanks, I'm in the US and not familiar with that brand but Oppo's customer service page says one of their phones is water resistant:

"The second digit is for the water resistance rating. R15 Pro has seven (7), meaning that the device can be submerged in up to one meter of fresh water for half an hour."
R15 Pro water-resistant feature | OPPO Global

Although that page makes clear it is not water resistant in salt water, I still wonder if the phone was in his pocket if it could have stayed active for up to 30 minutes while he floated towards the lighthouse. Perhaps that could account for the pings away from his hostel. JMO.
Police said in their press conference that the ping was at 1.30pm (which is what baffles me as that was over 12hrs since he was seen and heard from)...

Yes he does walk into/near the sign post, but his walking is still in a straight line and not weaving all over the place, I tend to think he was more distracted with his phone as he is looking down the time.

Is it possible he met with foul play on the way back to hostel, then the perpetrator(s) dumped his phone in the area the his phone last pinged, to put off people searching for him?
Maybe they dumped it into the water or phone just ran out of battery at the time of last ping?

ETA: I really hope he is found alive, but using Occam's razor each day that passes, its not looking good. Sending good vibes to the family he is found alive

New twist in search for Theo Hayez as police zero in on headland next to Byron Bay's iconic lighthouse – as fellow backpacker slams hostel for not raising the alarm for THREE days

Mr Hayez was supposed to check out of his room on June 3 but hostel staff did not report him missing until June 6.

A friend he had been travelling with, Antoine Van Laethem, slammed the hostel for not raising the alarm sooner.

According to the ABC, he said: 'If someone doesn't check out after one day maybe you should ask yourselves some questions.'

Theo Hayez's Byron Bay hostel is slammed for taking TWO DAYS to raise the alarm | Daily Mail Online

The ABC has been told the young traveller was asked to leave the venue after showing signs of intoxication, and it's believed he intended to head back to the hostel where he was staying.

Police know he used WhatsApp the night he disappeared and understand his mobile phone last "pinged" in the Cape Byron area on June 1.

Authorities are searching an area between The Pass, Wategos Beach and then the Cape Byron lighthouse in a bid to find Mr Hayez's mobile phone.

Why missing backpacker's encrypted WhatsApp messages may never be unlocked

Hypothetically, if the phone was dumped in opposite direction to hostel to put off searchers.... maybe the search should be expanded to just as far in the opposite direction to hostel the other way.... i.e. just as far as the lighthouse is from the hostel, they should search that far out out from the hostel in the opposite direction to lighthouse. Hope thst makes sense.

MOO

The phone would have kept regularly pinging, all by itself, as it sought out the nearest available tower - until it ran out of battery charge.

Early on a jacket was found but quickly discounted. I just can’t find the link. The police released the bottle shop footage to publicise his full outfit, head to toe, to prompt memory and because no clothing has been found.

The phone is a neon purple Oppo as seen today in reports (see link attached).

He apparently went back to the hostel after visiting the bottle shop. He would’ve made the trek between the hostel and town a few times, so you’d assume he’d know the way without needing directions (ie google maps).

He was last captured on footage outside the Aloha apartments just after 11pm. The family believe it to be him in the footage, but the police aren’t using it. He stood there for awhile looking at his phone. It’s been assumed he’s looking at google maps for directions to the hostel. I’m now wondering if he’s actually standing there on the edge of town waiting to meet up with someone, or waiting to hear back from someone on what’s app. He may have made tentative plans to meet them that night and is trying to confirm before walking the final leg home.

He could be in a house.

He doesn’t look wobbly when leaving Cheeky Monkeys to me, and doesn’t look like he’s walking into that pole, as people keep saying. He looks distracted by his phone as soon as he leaves. He also leaves via Kingsley Street and not the expected Jonson Street. He’d be familiar enough with the place by then to know the general way home and that the direct route out of the bar is right and not left.

I reckon he was trying to connect with someone on what’s app from the moment he left the bar rather than the more popular take that he was looking at google maps. He may have told that person he was heading home, or waiting outside Aloha and they’ve caught up with him along the way, even from the other direction. They may have also finally got in touch when he was close to home and he then changed course and headed up the beach.

I’ve read you entered your room at the hostel with a door access card and they could see he hadn’t used his that night (no log in recorded on their system). The maid’s said his bed was made and nothing looked touched. I think it’s been confirmed he didn’t return to his room after Cheeky Monkeys.

Something changed between Aloha and the hostel and probably directed him to the beach. The phone pings at the headland, his whatsapp activity becomes a focal point, and now they’re looking for his phone. Human intervention?

Here's the link about the jacket. I noticed it in an article that I was reading yesterday.

Yesterday they discovered a black, hooded jacket in bushland near Clarkes Beach, an area popular for illegal camping. Police this morning told news.com.au they no longer think the jumper belongs to Mr Hayez.

They repeat the same footage a few times, but about 3rd repeat in, its an extra half second longer and at last second he misses the pole.

TBH i have done this before while texting and walking and at last minute just scoot around the pole. Embarrassing, but i see people doing it all the time.

The fact he missed the pole means he probably had some cognitive functionality still.

Wonder what specifically he was doing to get turfed out? His buddy stayed on and I bet they were mutually plastered. Was he whatsapping someone he met in Cheeky’s? Did he turn down Kingsley Street to hover nearby for abit, to see if whoever it was would join him? They’d have cctv inside right? Are we looking for another backpacker perhaps?
