Details of Disappearance

Jennifer was last seen at East High School in Kansas City, Missouri on January 22, 1998. She was a sophomore at the school at the time. She attended her first two morning classes, then got into a fight with some other students and left the campus at 9:30 a.m.

Jennifer apparently went to a nearby grocery store afterwards, where she met Wesley Ira Purkey, a local handyman who had interviewed for a plumbing job in the area that morning. She got into his white 1989 Ford pickup truck and has never been heard from again.

Initially, authorities believed Jennifer left of her own accord. She had an unstable home life, and she had recently transferred from Ruskin High School and felt unsafe in her new school. However, she was about to take her driver's license test, and her family maintained that she would never have run away from home. Eventually her disappearance was reclassified as an abduction.

Purkey confessed to Jennifer's murder in December 1998, while he was in jail awaiting trial for murdering an elderly woman in her home. He has a long criminal record and was addicted to alcohol and drugs in 1998. He stated he would assist in the investigation if he was transferred from a state prison to a federal prison. He was charged in Jennifer's death in October 2001.

Purkey stated he had forcibly abducted Jennifer, taken her to his home in Lansing, Kansas, raped her and stabbed her to death. He claimed he dismembered her body and burned it in a fireplace. He led investigators to the place where he said he discarded Jennifer's jawbone and her undergarments. Authorities searched several areas for her remains, but never found anything.

Purkey was convicted of Jennifer's murder in 2003. A photo of him is posted with this case summary.

During the penalty phase of his trial, he changed his story slightly: he still admitted to killing Jennifer, but said he had not abducted her and she had gone to his home willingly. He said he fabricated the kidnapping part of the story because he wanted Jennifer's murder to be considered a federal crime and prosecuted in federal court.

He was sentenced to death and is awaiting execution. Purkey apologized to Jennifer's father before his sentence was handed down.

There was a report that Jennifer's remains were found in January 2004, but the report was false and she is still missing. Foul play is suspected in her case due to the circumstances involved.

I Submitted this girl to NamUS, she will be MP54564 when she is published. I did notice that her NCMEC info has been removed from the database. I will ask about this soon. She may have been removed by accident.

I just found out about this case after listening to a podcast episode from 'The Minds of Madness' on it. She was being bullied at school and that's why she left that day. If only she had stayed.

Yep, I’m trying to get her put back on NCMEC. For some reason her info was removed from the website.

"The U.S. Department of Justice on Thursday announced it has scheduled the executions of five death-row inmates across the country, including a Kansas man who in 1998 raped and killed a 16-year-old Kansas City girl before dismembering her body.

The executions would be the first carried out by the federal government since 2003.

In a statement, Attorney General William P. Barr said Wesley Ira Purkey, 67, was among five inmates scheduled to be executed. Barr said he directed the head of the Federal Bureau of Prisons to adopt a proposed addendum clearing the way for the federal government to carry out the death penalty for the first time in nearly two decades.

Purkey’s execution is set for Dec. 13."

According to the DOJ, Purkey violently raped and killed a 16-year-old girl and then dumped her mutilated body into a septic pond.

“On Nov. 5, 2003, a jury in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri found Purkey guilty of kidnapping a child resulting in the child’s death, and he was sentenced to death. Purkey’s execution is scheduled to occur on Dec. 13, 2019.”

Federal death row inmate from Kansas wants execution delayed

Aug 28, 2019

"A federal death row inmate from Kansas who raped, killed and dismembered a 16-year-old girl and beat an 80-year-old woman to death wants the chance to present claims that his trial lawyer was ineffective.

Attorneys for Wesley Ira Purkey on Tuesday requested a stay of his execution, currently scheduled for Dec. 13.

Purkey is among five death-row inmates across the country set to be executed in the next five months. The executions, which the Justice Department announced in July, would be the first carried out by the federal government since 2003.

The Kansas City Star reports the defense argued that his trial lawyer failed to investigate his traumatic childhood, which included sexual abuse by alcoholic family members and a Catholic priest....

Purkey, of Lansing, was sentenced to death for the 1998 killing of Jennifer Long after picking her up in Kansas City, Missouri. Purkey raped Long, stabbed her repeatedly and used a chainsaw to cut her body into pieces. He burned her remains in a fireplace and then dumped her ashes 200 miles away in a septic pond in Clearwater, southwest of Wichita.

Nine months later, Purkey was arrested in the killing of 80-year-old Mary Ruth Bales, of Kansas City, Kansas. He pleaded guilty to Bale's murder and was handed a life sentence.

A federal jury in the Western District of Missouri found Purkey guilty in 2003 of kidnapping Long, resulting in her death. Prosecutors sought the death penalty. Purkey has remained at the U.S. Penitentiary in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Long's mother, Glenda Lamont, has said she planned to attend the execution...."

Weird headline. His dinner had nothing to do with his death. He had dementia. He decided to eat his pie later, apparently not realizing he’d be dead later. If this was someone’s grandpa who later passed away, it would be sad. But this guy was an admitted two time killer so I don’t care.
