According to Matthew Searle, CEO of the UK-based Lucie Blackman Trust charity which is acting as a liaison between the London-based family and the media, Nora told her family that she wanted to see a waterfall during her holiday to Malaysia.

Acting on this previously undisclosed information, a volunteer searcher combed the area near the waterfall and made the grim discovery.

Nora's Belfast-born mother Meabh Quoirin and French father Sebastien Quoirin endured the grim task of formally identifying their daughter's body which had been airlifted to the Tuanku Ja'afar Hospital in Seremban, about 70km from the capital Kuala Lumpur.

They are absolutely broken," Mr Searle told the Irish Independent.

National deputy police chief Mazlan Mansor said yesterday that the body "was not in any clothings" and while it remained a missing persons case, police were looking into all possibilities including the "angle of criminal investigation".

The police investigation will now focus on her final movements and a post-mortem examination, which is due to be conducted today, may provide clues as to how she died.

The rugged area where her body was found had been searched previously as part of a massive search operation that swelled to around 350 people as fears grew for the missing girl.

Meanwhile, a forensics team cordoned off the area where the body was discovered after winching the remains to a helicopter to remove it from the dense bush.

Mr Searle - whose charity helps families of people who die or go missing abroad - said the area where Nora was found "may have been covered in the early part of the search".

But why her body wasn't found earlier - especially when sniffer dogs were deployed - remains a mystery.

"It may have been they just got lucky," he said of the discovery yesterday.

However, how Nora - who was born with the congenital brain defect holoprosencephaly and had severe developmental delays - died was not disclosed by police, pending the outcome of today's autopsy.

"We have no indication as to how she died," said Mr Searle, who is speaking on behalf of the Quoirin family.

However, he said there were no reports of obvious damage to her body - from a struggle, injury or mauling by an animal.

"We heard the body is in good condition. We'll know more tomorrow," he said last night.

So it’s my guess Nora was dumped at the waterfall after the Lucie Blackman spokesman released the information of Nora wanting to see a waterfall while in Malaysia. It says she could have been covered before...would thermal imaging not have found her if that was the case?

I want to know TOD. If she died the day she went missing or shortly thereafter nobody would use the words "in good condition" anymore. Maybe he just meant the body was intact.

A post-mortem examination will be carried out by senior pathologists from Kuala Lumpur this morning.

State police chief Mohamad Mat Yusof, who has led the searches, said: 'We will inform the post-mortem result tomorrow. Based on that we will decide if we need to investigate further if we are not satisfied.'

He said that the search and rescue operation had yet to be called off, should authorities need to look for more evidence tomorrow.

The deputy chief of Malaysia's police force Mazlan Mansor had earlier said that officers have so far found no evidence of criminal behaviour.

But he refused to confirm whether Nora had suffered any injuries or if anybody else may have been involved in her death.

He described Nora as 'completely naked' but 'intact' when she was found, adding it was too soon to determine how long her body had been at the scene.

The area, which is popular with local tourists and located in an area known as the Pantai hills, had previously been searched – but no clues were found.

The Dusun resort offers guided tours to the Lata Berembun waterfall, involving a 20-minute trek to the jungle entrance and a further one-hour walk along a defined jungle trail.

In a sad twist, it emerged yesterday that the teenager – who was born with a debilitating brain condition – had been keenly anticipating a trip to the waterfall.

Only hours before her body was discovered, a member of the hiking club that found her said the group had been instructed to check the location.

Shirley Yap, who was among a group of around 20 volunteers from the nearby town of Seremban, said: 'We had heard she was excited about seeing a waterfall when she arrived in the resort.'

The hikers, including leader Kenny Chan, were taken to give statements at a police station in the nearby village of Pantai, which served as the headquarters for the search operation.

I can't believed they waited so many days to check that waterfall, if someone knew she wanted to visit it.

This would be very important to determined and how is this waterfall in relation to the river where the white woman swimming was spotted.

I believe that was a false sighting, maybe a diversion?

You think she was held captive for 2 days ??? Before she was killed.

I am very interested in why/what you think happened to her.

Can you share what you think happened?
I have several hunches, but will wait for post-mortem results.

The dogs lost her scent after 100m from the cabin, so I assume she was alive after sunrise on Aug 4, and walked to that spot. We don't know if anyone accompanied her.

Her siblings and parents didn't report hearing her go down the wooden stairs, or open the window, or make any unusual noise.

They were convinced by Aug 6 morning that she must have been abducted.

That's all we know so far.

If the post-mortem concludes at noon, hopefully we'll have results very soon thereafter.

Actually the parents were convinced she was abducted the very moment they reported her missing. JMO
