#MarkeithLoyd now faces a second trial next year for killing Orlando officer Debra Clayton. Clayton confronted Loyd at a Walmart while he was on the run about a month after killing Sade Dixon. He shot and killed her. He says in self-defense. This is also a DP trial.

Markeith Loyd Sentenced to Life in Prison for the Murder of Ex-Girlfriend Sade Dixon. This is a victory for his attorney who was able to persuade against a recommendation for the death sentence. Will he be able to do the same in the Deborah Clayton Trial?

It's interesting that the jury in Markeith Loyd's case found the state proved two aggravating factors (he was on probation, previously battered an officer), but jurors did not find prosecutors proved the third one - that Dixon's unborn child was a person under 12 years old.

Markeith Loyd’s attorney seeks pay bump for jurors in trial for slain Orlando police officer

April 29, 2020

"Markeith Loyd’s attorney is asking that the court increase the pay to jurors for the murder trial of Orlando Police Lt. Deborah Clayton.

Terence Lenaman’s motion says people are already facing hardship because of COVID-19, and they can’t face another by being out of work. He estimates about an $1,100 loss for people who serve.

The motion asks to get compensation to $8.25 an hour, which is more than $15 a day for the first three days then $30 after that, which is otherwise offered...."

Markeith Loyd’s attorney files motion to dismiss Lt. Debra Clayton murder trial

The attorney representing Markeith Loyd has filed a motion to dismiss the convicted murder’s upcoming second murder trial for the death of Orlando Police Lt. Debra Clayton.

His attorney, Terence Lenamon, argued that the upcoming trial goes against the doctrine of “collateral estoppel,” which prevents someone from being tried for the same crime twice.

Loyd was scheduled to go to trial in May for the shooting death of Clayton, but the trial has been delayed due to COVID-19.

The attorneys argued that the jury in the Dixon trial “indisputably used, relied on, and made ultimate determinations concerning that evidence to support its verdict in the initial trial.”

Loyd was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of first-degree murder in Dixon’s trial.

Markeith Loyd won’t face trial this year in Orlando cop’s killing

Markeith Loyd will not face trial this year in the 2017 shooting of Orlando police Lt. Debra Clayton, a judge said at a Tuesday hearing.

Loyd’s trial, which was scheduled to start in May, was postponed in March due to concerns over COVID-19.

The Ninth Judicial Circuit announced Monday that jury trials in Orange and Osceola counties would resume in October after improving public health conditions, but Marques said Loyd’s case would not be tried before spring 2021.
