I still lean to this answer myself. Previously I was leaning to someone picked her up and/or she was being sex trafficked. I know when they were searching it was very windy which was hampering the search dogs. Many times the simple answer is the correct answer.

Lost people can walk way further than people realize. Last year that little boy that got lost walked miles. People were shocked that he could walk that far. Unfortunately he was finally found dead. And in an area that had been searched several times.

So now think of how far a teenage girl with an altered state of mind could walk. And I suppose the desert can decompose a body rather quickly. Searching a desert can't be easy.

The SM and the dad did so many things wrong. No disputing that. SM really screwed up those first golden hours of finding her. She also did many things that in my opinion were inappropriate (Halloween party) but that doesn't make her a murderer.
I agree that it's very possible that Karlie wandered into the desert and succumbed to the elements. I agree that dad and SM didn't handle Karlie's emotional state very well that night and IMO SM went off the rails with her YouTube videos. Still, that may not mean either of them did anything nefarious to her.

But now that so much time has passed it seems to me that the most reasonable scenario is that Karlie's body is somewhere nearby in the desert. And as you say, searching such a large area is difficult. Her dad and SM may be hiding/lying about some of their actions but it doesn't necessarily have to be that they actively harmed Karlie.

As much as I am wary of the dad and SM if I think the events through from a logical point of view then I cannot discount Karlie wandering into the desert due to her disorientation. And IMO a stranger happening upon Karlie on the highway and picking her up in order to harm her has incredibly low odds. The highway has traffic but it's not especially busy.

IMO if they would be more truthful it might be easier to either discount that scenario or focus more upon it. The changing stories that both told only muddies the possibilities and that's not helpful in finding Karlie. All MOO.

and so this becomes difficult to reconcile for me...

There were no indications of forced entry to the home. She left all her belongings behind, including her cellular phone, eyeglasses and money, and has never been heard from again.snipped

Imo, she would not have left the above items behind.

Something I hadn't heard before. In her final text to her boyfriend Karlie said the marijuana must have been laced with something. Although her actions were abnormal, I wasn't sure if Karlie was aware that something was wrong. jmo

the "facts," as presented, aren't adding up for me. texting her boyfriend to say the weed must have been laced, soon after ingesting it when it would have had a more profound effect. but then abandoning her phone and possessions much later when the effects would have had some time to subside or wear off. the timeline, and or the "facts," once again seems as if they are inaccurate or manipulated.

Don't know when the text was sent. Don't know what she was reacting to & how long it would last. It has been reported that the SM & Karlies boyfriend had been talking throughout the night. I'm guessing the SM was trying to find out what Karlie ingested. After listening to the tape made of Karlie by the SM, Dr phil said Karlie sounded paranoid & was not surprised she took off.

i'm going to go out on a limb here and say that "if" karlie sent the text to her boyfriend, then the text was sent before she "abandoned" her phone.

lots of things have been reported, including bigfoot, ufo's and the loch ness monster. i'll stick to what's been reported by LE and other victim's agencies before i start chasing reports.

i don't care how dr. phil thought she sounded, but there are lots of reasons people become paranoid and only one of them is drugs. and others are completely grounded in reality. i'm capable of forming my own opinions just like everyone else on this board. only problem is, no one else has been able to hear the partial recordings dr. phil heard, let alone the full ones.

lastly...

I'll tune out the sarcasm and say fair enough. So, if we stick to what's been reported by LE and other victim's agencies we don't know much.

Which reminds me of a question I keep forgetting to ask. Do we know for sure when the video was taken? On Dr Phil's show, SM seemed very protective of the video. I would assume LE would have forensically confirmed the date, time, and contents.

I haven't been following this thread, but if one ingests marijuana, it can take from 30 minutes to 3 hours to reach its greatest effect (which is why it's so hard to judge how much to eat) and it can hang around in the body for up to 12 hours. Many many years ago, I ate some pot brownies that had been treated with something (we later figured out it might've been Paraquat). I spent the night throwing up and thinking I was going crazy. It wasn't until the next day that I heard that the pot was bad, and then it all made sense.

That said, if she thought the pot had been laced with something, it must've at least started to take effect. Also, if she felt weird and attributed it to the pot, she might've been able to discount some of the weirdness, so it could've had less effect on her. JMO

I don't think the SM said at exactly what point in the evening the recording was made.

sorry if i got a little personal with my sarcasm bwt, i shouldn't have directed it at you, when i really wanted to point it at the shoddy, incomplete and manipulated story i think we are being fed. and i appreciate that you could see through that and not take it too personally. i respect that a lot.

this is good point too, and i think edibles were readily available legally in california in 2018, no?

when i was in my 20s, many moons ago, i had a similar experience. innocently ate a brownie at a holiday party and had two beers and drove home. went to bed, couldn't really fall asleep and then started to hallucinate some 2 or 3 hours later. lasted quite a while too. had no idea the brownie had weed in it and it was not fun at all.

that said, i still don't think the timeline and narrative are adding up. and best i can tell, all the important "facts" are coming from step mom and as we've seen, she has trouble keeping them straight.

Am I confusing cases or, in the very beginning, we heard about Karlie's father and stepmother claiming that her phone was not in the house, and then the boyfriend claiming to have seen her phone either on the kitchen or on her bedroom (I think he said bedroom though), when he went to the Gusé's home the morning she was reported missing?

I haven't heard anyone say the phone was not in the house. Might have, I just haven't heard it. Other posters have commented that the boyfriend said the phone was found in the bedroom and the SM & dad said it was found on the kitchen counter. Some posters have considered this a big discrepancy. I don't. Did they discover the phone together simultaneously? Who really discovered it? No matter what, I don't see why either one would lie about it.

That's it! I knew there was something with the phone, thank you! I don't think they found it together, because if they did, why lie about it?

Details of Disappearance
Karlie was last seen walking towards Highway 6 after leaving her residence in the White Mountain Estates area of Chalfant, California on October 13, 2018. Her stepmother saw her lying awake at 5:48 a.m., and went to sleep in the same room. Between 7:15 and 7:30 a.m., she woke up, and realized Karlie was gone.

There were no indications of forced entry to the home. She left all her belongings behind, including her cellular phone, eyeglasses and money, and has never been heard from again.

The night before her disappearance, Karlie came home after an evening out with friends and admitted to her parents that she had smoked marijuana. She seemed anxious and paranoid, and in her final text to her boyfriend she said the marijuana had been laced. It's possible she was still disoriented from the effects of the drug at the time she went missing.

Karlie and her father and stepmother had only recently moved to Chalfant, and she has relatives in Yerington, Nevada, 160 miles away. Her biological mother fears she may have had an overdose on the night of her disappearance, while her stepmother says she thinks Karlie was abducted.

Her case is being investigated as a simple missing person due to lack of evidence of a crime.

Like many millions of other people, I have vacationed up towards that area, starting as a kid. My sister and I were discussing this case today.

To us, the biggest concern is the area is so transient. When she disappeared, it was right in the middle of deer hunting season. That is a good area to stop to eat, get supplies, lodge if they aren’t camping, etc. All those roads and HWY 6 included is used by hunters to go to areas they had deer tags for, or to try an area they haven’t hunted in before.

My point and concern is, this could so easily be a crime of opportunity, a pretty young girl, alone, walking alongside the road, possibly disoriented somewhat. Easy prey. And the hunters are all carrying guns.

With no other tie to the area, they could grab her, put her in their vehicle and head home, which doesn’t necessarily have to be in California. She could have been taken anywhere. JMHO

So, I've never been paranoid on drugs, nor have I been around anyone paranoid on drugs. But I can imagine that if I'm a drugged out person who is paranoid, and I think I need to leave the house, I can't imagine I'd be very quiet about it. Maybe not yelling, but not silent as a mouse. And yet SM slept in the same room (I swear I read somewhere in the same bed) and didn't notice Karlie get up from the bed and leave?

Seajay is correct about the area being transient. Bishop has tourist throughout the year. Back in 2008, I was in the Bishop Kmart at night with the family. While at the cash register, I discovered my three year old wasn't with me. My wife started calling his name and looking down the isles. I immediately ran out the front door and scanned the parking lot. I didn't see him. What I did see was a parking lot of campers, RV and semi-trucks. The thought that someone had grabbed him and was leaving the parking lot was too scary. Fortunately, when I returned to the store my wife had found him in the toy isle.

I don't think this can prove anything one way or another. A drug induced paranoia could involve whispering and being weirdly quiet because "you're being followed/watched/etc" or could be shouting at something not there. Not knowing what she took and how she was reacting - I wouldn't draw any conclusions. I also find it hard to believe that so much later she would still be under the effects, but it is all in the realm of possibility.

I got my most favorite sweatshirt in the world at that Kmart.

It is a tourist area. Schats Bakery, the casino. Hwy 395 is the gateway of the Sierra Nevadas. Old mining. It’s teeming with history. During the summer the population swells as people camp at the many campgrounds.

But again, it all people visiting the area, not locals and it’s so easy for a random stranger to be passing through and see her. IMO

Six years of Dateline's Missing in America: 134 still missing

On October 12, 2018, 16-year-old Karlie Gusé left her home in Chalfant, California to hang out with friends nearby. Karlie’s stepmother Melissa told Dateline she picked Karlie up from town and brought her home around 9 p.m. According to Melissa, they ate dinner together before Karlie went to bed. Karlie’s father Zachary told Dateline that Karlie seemed “disoriented” before she went to bed, but would not comment further on her condition. But early the next morning when Melissa went to Karlie’s room to check on her stepdaughter, Karlie was nowhere to be found. In a March 2019 interview on the Dr. Phil daytime talk show, Melissa told Dr. Phil she had lied to NBC in October when she spoke to Dateline. “Melissa, you told NBC, the next morning that at 5:45 a.m., you did your usual routine of opening up the kids’ doors, saying good morning, getting them ready for school -- that sort of thing. Did you – she was still in bed at that time. Did you go back and lay down?” Dr. Phil asked Melissa on the show which aired on March 25, 2019. “No. That – the Dateline NBC?” Melissa answered. “Yeah, that was a false story. Because I wasn’t – it was a lie about checking in on Karlie. Because it was in the beginning, and I didn’t know what to say and – I shouldn’t have even done the interview.” Karlie’s mother Lindsay Fairley, who lives in Nevada, told Dateline she has been sick to her stomach from the pain her daughter’s disappearance has caused. Authorities say Karlie was last seen wearing a white t-shirt and grey sweatpants.
