Scientist quits role after 'undermining' lockdown

"Prof Neil Ferguson has quit as a government adviser on coronavirus after admitting an "error of judgement".

Prof Ferguson, whose advice to the prime minister led to the UK lockdown, said he regretted "undermining" the messages on social distancing.

It follows a Daily Telegraph story that a woman, said to be his "married lover", visited his home in lockdown.

His modelling of the virus's transmission suggested 250,000 people could die without drastic action.

This led Prime Minister Boris Johnson to announce on 23 March that he was imposing widespread curbs on daily life aimed at stopping the spread of coronavirus.

In a statement, Prof Ferguson said: "I accept I made an error of judgement and took the wrong course of action.

"I have therefore stepped back from my involvement in Sage (Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies).

"I acted in the belief that I was immune, having tested positive for coronavirus and completely isolated myself for almost two weeks after developing symptoms.

"I deeply regret any undermining of the clear messages around the continued need for social distancing."

He called the government advice on social distancing "unequivocal", adding that it was there "to protect all of us". "

Here's something I've been wondering. If the virus in the air gradually falls down to the floor rather than floating up, are we less at risk of exposure the taller we are? I seriously considered wearing my boots with 4 inch heels to the grocery today but eventually pulled on my old cowboy boots. I would think the higher our eyes, nose and mouth are, the better our chances of being safe.

Apparently that wasn’t his only error of judgment, based on an earlier article posted a few pages back.

It's a thought, but not likely too relevant. Air circulation systems are usually on the ceiling, so height might not give an advantage.

One thing for sure, imo, I wouldn't use a bathroom air hand dryer. ewh!

Have you a link for that about SARS corpses?

Also, I thought some countries did have sophisticated tracing ( maybe South Korea and Hong Kong IMO)

Yes. As previously posted, this makes it clear that the question of SARS infected corpse contagion was answered in 2003. We all know that corpses excrete bodily fluid from following all these crimes.

Infected corpses excrete fluids, during SARS infection lived in those excreted fluids, therefore infected corpses could be contagious for up to 96 hours after death.

"SARS-CoV-2 (the proper name for the coronavirus responsible for COVID-19) can remain infectious on different surfaces for varying amounts of time.

"So, it would be possible that the virus could persist and remain infectious in or on the body of someone who has died," says Dr. Ilan Schwartz, infectious disease specialist and assistant professor at the University of Alberta.

During the first SARS outbreak in 2003, data suggested the virus could remain infectious in bodily fluids such as blood, urine and feces for 72 to 96 hours, says Jason Kindrachuk, microbiologist and assistant professor at the University of Manitoba. "

The virus can get on the bottom of your shoes. Best to be careful when removing them. Can Your Shoes Spread Coronavirus? The Answer Isn't So Clear-Cut

Trump administration in talks over potentially winding down coronavirus task force

The official told Fox News that doctors will continue to play an “important advisory role” in the process, as the administration has aimed to “make sure medical guidelines are kept up to date” and Americans are able to safely return to work. The official stressed that doctors were not being removed from the equation and called any reports reflecting that “false.”

Will the medical advisors be able to remain independent of political influence, and speak freely of the best health and safety practices, or will they have to speak only the party line?

Doesn't matter what's going on in other countries or how easy it is to discredit information. History says that SARS infection remained on corpses in Canada for up to 96 hours. Until there is proof that SARS Covid is different, best to trust history.

Can we discredit that SARS was contagious after death?

Is there a WS thread for this?

"A University of Pittsburgh researcher 'on the verge' of a breakthrough in understanding the coronavirus was found shot dead in his home, according to a report.

Bing Liu, 37, was allegedly killed inside his Pittsburgh-area townhouse Saturday by a man who then went outside to his car and shot himself, WTAE, a local ABC affiliate, reported.

Police believe Liu and the suspected gunman, identified as 46-year old Hao Gu, knew each other — although their connection is not believed to be related to Liu’s research. Liu’s death appears to be a homicide but a motive remains unclear, police told the outlet."

It might not matter if the virus lives on clothing or not....it matters if the consumers are worried about it.

Retailers need to make changes to assure and convince consumers it's safe to shop.

I really, really don't want to pull clothes over my head that someone else has just tried on or returned after purchase. jmo.

Well, here's something to consider. Purchased a classy outfit with pockets. During the evening, I put my hand in one of the pockets and came out with a pair of earings! Obviously previously worn.

96 hours seems like a really long time. Can you link this?

They probably played board games, musical instruments, planted gardens and other normal things that people did before society was commandeered by technology.

We've taught the granddaughter Yahtzee and I'm about to teach my DH poker. I've revived my alto saxophone skills, to the amusement of all within earshot. It looks like the backyard hedge maze may actually...become a hedge maze again.

We've listened to so many wonderful books on tape, DH has been playing D.J. (Bob Weir has live concerts on Thursdays, I believe it is). We are still planning travel - for 2022 and so on

Going out to the harbor today was not as much fun as we thought. First of all, the beach across the street was super super crowded, no masks and people not paying attention to whether they were downwind of each other. There was a mild breeze coming from the ocean, so if everyone had sat in their folding chairs with their backs to the wind, instead of one person sitting directly in the breeze, (people were setting up in parking lots because the sand was too crowded and being policed). What I didn't get, though, were the large groups (8+) wandering around walking up to and talking to other large or small groups, then going on to the next group, away from the beach, within a set of buildings. ??? Why do that right now? We waited patiently for a couple to get far enough ahead of us that we felt comfortable walking behind them to the parking lot, then, when we got to our car, the woman came over to our car, walked alongside the driver's side, and just as I reached the car, she circled around behind it. If I had continued going to the car, I would have come within 2-3 feet of her. Our car was the only car within 30 yards, and yet, she walked over from her car and got in my way. I asked, "Is there a problem?" She bends over and looks at our left rear fender. "Just trying to see what model car this is," she said.

So I waited for her to get that done (there are thousands of my car on the road - there's a badge and brand number on the front of it - why was she at our tailgate, so that we couldn't throw stuff in the back? For a moment, I thought it was a conspiracy. I'm just glad DH stayed calm. She flounced her hair around and then headed back to her car. She was probably 40. I was glad we were all wearing masks. I hate wearing a mask though.

Was it any of these? Also in the article.

Prof Neil Ferguson is one of the world's most influential disease modellers.

He is director of the MRC Centre for Global Infectious Disease Analysis.

The centre's mathematical predictions advise governments and the World Health Organization on outbreaks from Ebola in West Africa to the current pandemic.

It was that group's work, in early January, that alerted the world to the threat of coronavirus.

It showed hundreds if not thousands of people were likely to have been infected in Wuhan, at a time when Chinese officials said there were only a few dozen cases.

But he shot to public attention as "Professor Lockdown".

In mid-March, the maths showed the UK needed to change course or a quarter of a million people would die in a "catastrophic epidemic".

Those calculations helped transform government policy and all lives.

IMO they are invested in this and I think they are really interested in the wellbeing of the people. Dr. Birx has an office at the WH, don’t know if that will continue now. Dr. Fauci has never been shy about speaking, although I think he had to adjust his comments at times. Maybe now he will speak even more freely.
