Son of Federal Judge Killed, Husband Shot at Their New Jersey Home

The husband and son of a New Jersey federal judge were shot at their home Sunday afternoon, and a massive law enforcement response is underway.

Three senior law enforcement officials tell News 4 New York that a gunman shot Judge Esther Salas's spouse and child at their North Brunswick home around 5 p.m. Sunday. North Brunswick's mayor confirmed the son's death; the husband is in critical condition.

Preliminary indications are that the husband answered the door and was shot multiple times; the son came running to the door and was shot as well before the gunman fled, the sources said. Judge Salas was believed to be in the basement at the time of the shooting.

This is horrific....ambushed at home. What a terrible crime, and how devastating for this family, and the judicial community. Surely video will be found that can track who did this and how. Prayers that Judge Salas’ husband will recover from his wounds. The emotional toll will be much harder to bear.
 
If history is any indication, and Judge Salas was the target, the perpetrator is likely someone she ruled against.

This was the case with Judge Joan Lefkow, who returned to her Chicago home in 2005 to find the bodies of her husband and mother in the basement.

This was also the case with Judge Julie Kocurek, who was ambushed in her vehicle outside her Austin home in 2015. Fortunately, she survived.

Salas has presided over a number of high-profile trials in her tenure, including the trial of former "Real Housewife" Teresa Giudice.

Her husband, Mark Anderl, is a well-regarded criminal defense attorney.

The FBI, U.S. Marshals, New Jersey State Police and the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General all have personnel on scene investigating, and the FBI tweeted it was looking for "one subject" in the shooting.

Given the fact that her husband is a criminal defense attorney, either one of them may have have been specifically targeted by someone with a grudge.

This is shocking.
Whether Judge Salas or her husband was the target remains to be determined.
Their son was only 20 years old, devastating. My deepest condolences, and I pray that her husband survives.

Salas has also handled the usual mix of drug, child *advertiser censored*, and gang violence cases—and her husband had also represented an array of defendants charged with violent crimes.

Investigators have not released any motive or said who in the house was the intended target of the ambush. But federal judges are frequent targets of threats. Earlier this year, CNN cited Marshals Service data that showed that the 2,700-member federal judiciary received nearly 4,500 threats or “inappropriate communications” in 2019.

North Brunswick Mayor Francis “Mac” Womack said the judge’s husband was in critical condition and underwent surgery and is now in stable condition. He confirmed the couple’s son had died.

The FBI said they were searching for one suspect, and asked for help from the public.

Anderl served as an assistant prosecutor in Essex County before entering private practice.

Their son was a student at Catholic University.

Salas, 51, has handled cases involving members of the Grape Street Crips, in connection with a long-running drug-trafficking network that was taken down by the FBI in 2015. She was also the judge who sent Real Housewives stars Joe and Teresa Giudice to prison.

Given the fact that it was the husband who was initially shot when he answered the door, it's looking like the husband is as likely to have been the intended victim as the judge.

Seems like it's far more likely to be because of judgments against organised crime groups than it is anything to do with Epstein. I feel like putting that in the headlines is just a big red herring.

Yes, it’s clickbait.

I don’t even think this is going to have anything to do with a particular group, but was perpetrated by a lone individual with a grudge.

Criminal organizations know better than to target judges, because they know the type of investigative firepower that brings.

I can think of three recent cases where judges were targeted, and all were personal.

Judge Esther Salas was assigned this case in the District of New Jersey this past Wednesday - now her son is dead and her husband shot.

Very true.

Judge Salas, like any judge, made alot of decisions that inevitably had negative concequences for somebody. These decisions include re-affirming the very long federal sentence of a crime lord.

Then factor in that recent verse older decisions might not have a true bearing in the attack. For example, the murderer could have recently been released from prison. Or, a relative of the convicted might have grown to adulthood while nursing a grudge.

Likewise, the motive could be a civil matter decided recently, or long ago. Perhaps current economic conditions re-kindled a dormant grudge or a more aggressive relative of the defendant grew old enough to make a decision regarding an attack.

Though some cases and some defendants are probably more likely than others, it is probably a very large iceberg regarding a work related motive.
