GUILTY MI - Susie Zhao, 33, professional poker player, found fatally burned, Detroit, 13 Jul 2020 *arrest*

"Susie was Last seen by her parents on July 12th." according to
FBI now investigating death of woman found burned in northern Oakland County
and her remains were found early the next morning.

But the statement here is asking for info on her whereabouts the day before the parents last saw her:
"Police are asking anyone who may have seen Zhao between 3 a.m. and 8 a.m. on July 11 to immediately contact White Lake Police Lieutenant..."
Suspect in custody in connection to death of Waterford Township woman found ‘badly burned'

Perhaps they believe something noteworthy happened then either by her behavior / mental state / statements to parents in the day following or by the suspects statements.

Is not naming the suspect unusual?
"said Det. Lt. Christopher Hild. "We have to determine whether or not this is a cover-up or this may be some sort of retaliatory incident because of her profession."
Perhaps "cover up" implies the suspect is giving statements admitting to covering up the death by disposing of the body but not the killing.

JMO
I don’t think poker played a part in her death. She moved back home because she couldn’t afford to live in LA. Then Covid hit.

JMO: I agree, I don't think poker played a factor. Her death being poker related assumes she failed to pay a debt or made an enemy in some other way, which seems unlikely based on what friends and other poker players have said about her in various news articles. It seems she was considered incredibly likable and very smart. I too believe she likely relocated back to Michigan after COVID either caused or compounded financial stress. She was last seen @ 5:30PM on July 12 and her body was placed in the recreation area and set on fire sometime after 11:45PM. Her body would later be found around 8AM on July 13.

I think it is interesting that she was "wearing jogging pants, tennis shoes and a jogging-type top when her body was found." It seems possible that she was out for a walk or run sometime after 5:3oPM on July 12. And then (JMO), was intercepted by her assailant.

From poker pro to slaying victim: Susie Q's unlikely story

White Lake Township — The mystery over the slaying of a professional poker player in July remains, even as friends and family welcomed news of an arrest in the case.

While preparing a memorial honoring the life of a talented, high-stakes player, they cautiously embraced the news. But they're bracing to learn the truth about the death of Susie Zhao, 33.

“This is a horrendous thing that has happened,” said Kinga Wierzbicka, a friend since middle school. “It’s amplified because we have no answers.”

Police said Sunday a 60-year-old Pontiac man has been arrested in connection with the death of the professional poker player from Waterford Township...

I was expecting to read that she'd won a lot more money than that. Doesn't seem a huge amount to be won over a period of time.
She was primarily a cash game player, and it looks as if she dabbled in the occasional tournament.

So when you look up her career earnings, it’s only giving you those tournament numbers. Cash game profits aren’t tracked, and that’s where her money was coming from.

Based on the limits she was playing, she wouldn’t have been rich or anything. But some people do make a nice living playing those particular stakes.

I think at her level the comps would also be considerable. She could probably stay in Vegas absolutely free, and the casinos probably gave her free chips, etc.
She was a known face in the game so she would have been like free advertising to a lot of places.

Police: Slain poker player Susie Q met suspect at motel

White Lake Township — A transient sex offender charged in the slaying of an Oakland County pro poker player apparently met her at a motel the night before her badly burned body was found, police said Wednesday.

Jeffery Bernard Morris, 60, of Pontiac was formally charged Tuesday from a hospital bed in the death of Susie Zhao, 33, whose body was discovered July 13 near a trail head at the Pontiac Lake Recreation area.

At a news conference, police said they have yet to find a motive in Zhao's slaying...
