Another Fort Hood soldier missing

Another soldier, Sgt. Elder Fernandes, is missing from Fort Hood, according to a notice Thursday night from the U.S. Army 1st Cavalry Division.

The Killeen Police Department said that Fernandes, 23, hasn’t been seen since Monday afternoon, when his staff sergeant dropped him off at his home.

Fernandes is 5 feet 4 inches and weighs 133 pounds. He was last seen wearing black shorts and a T-shirt with red athletic shoes, according to the Killeen Police Department.

Another Fort Hood soldier has gone missing.

The Army on Thursday asked the public’s help in locating Sgt. Elder Fernandes of the troubled Killeen, Texas, military base.

Fernandes, 23, hasn’t been seen or heard from since Monday afternoon, Aug. 17, when his Staff Sergeant dropped him off at his residence, according to the Killeen Police Department.

“We are seeking your help in locating Sgt. Elder Fernandes,” the Army’s 1st Cavalry Division tweeted Thursday. “Please contact the Fort Hood Military Police at 254-288-1170 or US Army CID at 254-287-2722, if you have any information on his whereabouts.”

His family reported him missing Wednesday, police said.

Killeen Police searching for missing Fort Hood soldier

The soldier was reported missing on Wednesday, August 19. He was last seen by his staff sergeant Monday afternoon when he dropped him off at his residence located in the 2700 block of Woodlands Drive in Killeen.

Sgt. Fernandes a Chemical, Biological, Radiolical, and Nuclear Specialist assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division Sustainment Brigade.

Fort Hood officials say a search of the entire division area, including motorpools, parking lots and headquarters buildings was conducted. Fort Hood says the unit is in contact with the Fernandes family, the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division and civilian law enforcement agencies.

The soldier is from Brockton, Massachusetts. According to State Representative Liz Miranda, Sgt. Fernandes' car was found with all of his belongings. He recently signed a new lease and never picked up the keys to his apartment.

"This is very, very unusual. He has been in touch with us since last week. I personally spoke to him Friday morning. He spoke with his mom this past Sunday and he promised he would call on Monday," [aunt Isabel] Fernandes told ABC13. "Monday came and went and he didn't call, and he didn't answer calls from anyone else. Tuesday, no calls and my sister ended up flying down there yesterday, and still we haven't heard from him."

Fernandes is from Massachusetts. His mother traveled to Fort Hood to press Army officials, said her sister. Tim Miller of Equusearch will fly there tomorrow, he said. A search is being planned for Saturday.

"We are here all worried. He has a big family and we need to find him and we need to find him alive," said his aunt.

Texas EquuSearch is joining the search for another missing Fort Hood soldier.

Thursday night, Killeen police asked the public for help in finding Sgt. Elder Fernandes, 23. He has not been heard from by his family since Monday, Aug. 17, police said, when family members told them he was last seen by his staff sergeant.

Are you local to there? I am and I’ve lived here for nearly 15 years. This year has had the most missing covered by the news that I have ever heard of. And this is a very large base.

Hi @Ajs1004, being local in Killeen, do you feel there have always been a lot of missing persons cases, but they are just really covered by the media right now for the first time? Or do you feel the current situation is above and beyond where it has been?

This case again really worries me as EF never picked up the keys for the new place and contact family like he had promised, which is totally against his usual behavior.

I so hope he is located safe, but not very hopeful to be honest.

The post says a sexual assault response coordinator was working with Elder Fernandes and that he was transferred from his unit to protect him from retaliation.

FORT HOOD, Texas — An open investigation of "abuse sexual contact" involving missing Fort Hood soldier Sgt. Elder Fernandes was confirmed by the military post Friday evening.

"The unit sexual assault response coordinator has been working closely with Sgt. Fernandes, ensuring he was aware of all his reporting, care, and victim advocacy options," Lt. Col. Chris Brautigam, Fort Hood public affairs officer, said in a statement. "The unit also facilitated his transfer from a unit who has recently deployed to a different unit within the brigade to ensure he received the proper care and ensure there were no opportunities for reprisals."
