Looking for the Best Doctor who Treats Epilepsy

A Websleuths member is in need of a doctor who is the best when it comes to treating Epilepsy.

It doesn't matter the location they will travel.

This would be for someone over 18. He is in his mid 20's. He does not have any other condition.

As you may remember, I'm an RN in Texas. ( No longer working- kinda decided I was aging out).

This is the most brilliant doctor I know in the field of brain disorders. I'm posting, you certainly may PM but I wanted to give his name to EVERYONE who could need intervention involving intracranial or some spinal surgeries.
Please call his office. I do not know if he will see a person with Epilepsy if there are no other symptoms, but there's a very good chance he does the brain surgery to relieve epilepsy " misfirings".
I consider him to be a genius and a magnificent surgeon as well. You can check out his credentials online. He operates at Dallas Baylor University Hospital, the only place in Texas I'd have CNS surgery.

I would say there is not a single 'best' physician for any condition. Epilepsy (like cancer for example) is a complex and multi-faceted condition. You would not go to a breast cancer specialist for lung cancer treatment and vice versa. My former son-in-law's seizure disorder may have a completely different etiology from the next person. SO- I CAN recommend this site to help find an epilepsy specialist close to home:

Jocelyn Bautista, MD, is board-certified in (1) Adult Neurology, (2) Clinical Neurophysiology, and (3) Epilepsy.

Her specialty interests include adult epilepsy, epilepsy surgery, familial epilepsy, evidenced-based medicine, psychogenic nonepileptic seizures, and quality of care in epilepsy.

Dr. Bautista's research has made her an "Epilepsy Hero." This is what I mean: Upon completing her epilepsy fellowship at The Cleveland Clinic she received an American Academy of Neurology clinical research training fellowship award to begin her own study of familial epilepsy and to pursue training in genetic epidemiology at Case Western Reserve University. Her work resulted in the identification of a gene responsible for a familial syndrome of generalized epilepsy and paroxysmal dyskinesia.

She has been on the staff of the Cleveland Clinic's Epilepsy Center since 2001.

There’s epilepsy centers in most cities. Penn in Philly, Weill Cornell in NYC, Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, etc. Those may be good starting points. Is his current neurologist any help?

I am speaking very generally here, and not trying to start a debate. Boston medicine tends to more conservative than Philly & NYC. Personally, I’d prob pick Philly or NYC for any issues for my family.

Just to say, I don't think ANY ONE ever thought ONE doctor is the only person to go to or the one who can cure when others can't.

Each of us uses our experience based recommendations, but some of us have truly been blessed to know exceptional healers who will take people other doctors don't think can be helped or healed.
Then, set about to zap that disorder into oblivion. If I hadn't worked in ICU for many years, I likely would not have recognized the overall excellence of the doctor I recommended. I've never seen anyone who does so well with the seemingly impossibly ill.
If there are doctors like him " everywhere", then this is truly a miraculous country full of super- healers.

Without knowing more about the type of epilepsy - and certainly not to add alarm! - but if there is any occular involvement, there’s Wills Eye in Philly. Wills is across the street from Jefferson, which has a neurological division (I know nothing about Jefferson) and I believe there’s some relationship between Wills & Jefferson neuro.

In general, it can be very helpful to have each provider cc the patient in all communications. Patient needs to explicitly tell provider at first visit. This is so convenient when you’re dealing with multiple providers in search of a diagnosis - some of which you’ll only see once and never again.

To add to Shamrock's post- persons with complex medical issues (everyone actually) would do well to keep a binder of all consultations, lab results, prescriptions etc in chronological order AND take it to every appointment. Much easier for a provider to flip through it and find the info they may need in real time than trying to access different electronic health records (EHRs) that may not 'talk' to one another. Scans and xrays can be downloaded onto a CD for this purpose as well.

Dr Triffletti in New Jersey. While he never treated my family member he reviewed medical records and referred us to a colleague and spent many hours speaking to me by phone. He treated someone I knew and solved a very complex case
