A 29-year-old woman is being questioned over the murder of a baby in north Belfast.

The woman is also being held over the attempted murder of another child, who is in intensive care in hospital.

Police were called to the house at Brompton Park in the Ardoyne area shortly after 20:00 BST on Tuesday and found the two injured children.

Despite the efforts of the emergency services, the baby was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detective Chief Inspector Millar from the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Major Investigation Team said: “Our investigation into last night’s tragic events is progressing and I am keen to thank the local community for their ongoing support.

“A post mortem is expected to take place tomorrow (Thursday 29 July).

“The 29-year-old woman remains under arrest at this time.

“While we are not looking for anyone else in relation to this, I would reiterate our ask for anyone with information to contact us on 101 quoting reference number 1787 of 27/07/21.”

The father of a baby boy stabbed to death at a house in north Belfast on Tuesday is flying home to be with his two-year-old daughter as she fights for her life in hospital.

He was understood to have been in England but is returning to Belfast to be with his daughter.

It is believed he moved out of the Ardoyne house in recent days.

A 29-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder the two-month-old infant was stabbed to death and the two-year-old child seriously injured.

Local sources said the children's mother had also suffered injuries. The injured child is in intensive care, police said.

Looks like it could be a case of postpartum psychosis, which affects around 1 in 500 new mothers.

Raluca Tagani, 29, has been named as the killer. Liam was only 8 weeks old so it does look like very likely to be a postpartum mental illness.
