Canada - Coronavirus COVID-19 #3

Manitoba is not seeing a surge in cases. We're bucking the trend, possibly because the majority in Winnipeg kept wearing masks even when the mandate was lifted. ( I don't know about rural areas.) I was at a major mall here a few days ago, and about 95% of people had masks on even though they weren't mandated. The same at Safeway. Our vax percentage is high (82% one dose and 75% two). However, the mask mandate will be coming back as a pre-emptive measure. Most of us are in favour as we see what's happening elsewhere, we know the Delta variant is very contagious, and we want to protect the under 12 kiddies when they return to school. There are a couple of areas in the south where the vax rate is low. Most of the ones resisting the vaccine are Old Colony Mennonites and Hutterites, I believe. While ony 15% of the population, these areas have recently been generating 50% of the cases.

Saskatchewan was very laid back in the beginning, even declaring that Covid was over because the first wave initially bypassed them. Not so much anymore. Ontario spreads into Manitoba, BC spreads into Alberta. Quebec is a hotspot.

Today, Quebec, Ontario and BC are sounding the alarm. How long until Alberta smartens up. Nurses have already had their vacations cancelled for emergency alert.

COVID-19 vaccination passports coming to Ontario ‘within weeks’ in attempt to avoid further lockdowns

The implementation of the COVID-19 vaccine passport will be discussed at a cabinet meeting scheduled for Tuesday. Sources say that while some cabinet members are opposed to a vaccine passport, the program will go ahead.

Many local medical officers of health, as well as mayors of some of Ontario's biggest cities and independent medical experts, have publicly joined the chorus, saying a clear, effective provincewide system is needed to avoid confusion and curb the current wave.

Alberta numbers are rising. There are no covid-related restrictions. Some universities are mandating non-medical masks regardless of govt decisions. The health minister is struggling to find the scientific evidence she used to decide that all covid-related restrictions should be dropped in July. The Premier is off grid during vacation.

"There is still no timeline for when public health data used to justify changes in Alberta's COVID-19 regulations will be made public, a week after the province's chief medical officer of health again apologized for failing to release the information.

No date has been set for the release of data that Dr. Deena Hinshaw promised to deliver, a spokesperson for Alberta Health said in a statement to CBC News."

I certainly stand corrected. I thought it impossible that Canadians would be this stupid, but they are. Although we don't know whether people calling about the drug are Albertans.

"Alberta feed stores say they're receiving a deluge of callers asking to buy ivermectin due to misinformation that suggests the livestock dewormer can be used to treat COVID-19 in humans.
...

"It's obviously not intended for human use in any way, shape or form. It's meant to get rid of worms in horses' guts … so, these people see that ivermectin liquid, they search it, our website comes up and they give us a call thinking that we can just sell it to them," Olson said.
...

The largest study in favour of ivermectin as a COVID-19 treatment was retracted after concerns about data fabrication, plagiarism and ethical breaches.

Medical journal The Lancet has called for more study on ivermectin's efficacy to reduce viral load or improve recovery, but said there is no drug that can replace preventative public health policies and large-scale testing for COVID.

No clinical studies have proven yet whether ivermectin can slow or stop the novel coronavirus from growing in human cells — but that hasn't stopped right-wing media personalities and politicians from touting it as a possible treatment or cure for COVID-19.

U.S. Centers for Disease Control urges Americans to 'reconsider' travel to Canada over COVID-19
''WASHINGTON - The U.S. State Department is now urging Americans to “reconsider travel” to Canada due to what the Centers for Disease Control call “high” levels of COVID-19 infection.''

''There was no specific reason given for the revised advisory beyond the CDC's notice, also issued today, which pegs Canada's current COVID-19 levels at “high.”

''Only about 61 per cent of eligible Americans are fully vaccinated, compared with nearly 75 per cent of Canadians over the age of 12.''

Of course, for the US, where the CDC map shows the covid level as Very High, the advisory should be 'Do not travel', but that's not the case, is it...

There is a page where they explain the data that creates the levels:
"CDC uses COVID-19 data reported by the World Health Organization and other official sources to make determinations about THN levels..."
For Canada to jump a level, High = 100-500 new cases per 100,000 population, over the last 4 weeks.
COVID-19 and Your Health

I think that the idea of vaccine documents has been presented all wrong. We all have vaccination cards from our childhood. Those cards have been required by schools for decades, and unvaccinated children must declare their status when enrolling in school.

All of a sudden, everyone who has had a vaccination card from birth is angry that the information has to be updated today with the newest vaccination update. It strikes me as complaining for the sake of complaining, anger about something that is not new, but suddenly it's an infringement on individual rights.
