GUILTY IA - Mollie Tibbetts, 20, found deceased, Poweshiek County, 19 Jul 2018 *Arrest* #51

It does make me nervous, considering all the craziness and drama and twists and turns in this case. Could an appeals court throw them some bones?
My guess (and you never know for sure) is that an appeals court might say there were errors, but that that the errors were harmless and would not have changed the verdict. Worse case is that the verdict is overturned and set for retrial. But that presents a new problem for Rivera. How does he explain these two differing ridiculous stories?

Mollie's mom Laura Calderwood is comforted in court while her victim impact statement was read in court. 8/30/21

Mr. Rivera, I come here today not because I feel the need to address you. However, I come here to give a voice to our daughter, granddaughter, sister, girlfriend, niece, cousin and friend Mollie Cecilia Tibbetts.

Mollie was a young woman who simply wanted to go for a quiet run on the evening of July 18 [2018] and you chose to violently and sadistically end that life.

I want to address the chain of events you set off on the morning of August 18 after you led authorities to Mollie's remains in a cornfield.

Do you know what it's like Mr. Rivera to be woken up by your youngest son Scott, telling you the sheriff needs to talk to us?

Scott and I stood at the entrance of our home where Sheriff Tom Kriegel and [Deputy] Matt Maschmann stood with tears in their eyes. It took them a minute to find the words to say, "We hoped for a different result. However, we found Mollie's remains today."

I thanked them for their service and they left because there was still a lot of work to be done.

I led Scott, whose eyes were burning with tears, to the living room and sat him down on the couch.

"Scott," I said, "I am so sorry. I'm going to call Aunt Billie over to the house to be with you because Mom has a lot of work to do."

Next, I needed to tell my son Jake.

Jake was in his apartment in Iowa City and I did not want him to hear that his sister was not coming home on the news. Knowing my sister Kim was headed to Iowa City for work, I called her and said, "Kim, they found Mollie's remains this morning, and I need you to pick Jake up and bring him home."

It was a race against the clock to notify all the people who care so deeply for Mollie that she was not coming home. It was very important to notify the people who cared deeply about Mollie, so they did not hear this on the news.

Imagine what it's like to call Mollie's father Rob, who resides in Fresno, California, and say, "Rob, I am so sorry to have to tell you this, but they found Mollie's remains this morning, and I need you to come back to Iowa."

Can you imagine Mr. Rivera, as a father, having Paulina's mother taken away from you and to have to tell your daughter that she will never come home?

However, the most difficult person to tell was Mollie's grandmother and my mother, Judy Calderwood.

Judy truly believed her granddaughter would be found alive, because who could harm such a beautiful, vibrant, young woman so full of life, and promise? Who could harm Judy's precious grandmother, let alone brutally murder her and dump her body in a cornfield?

This was heartbreaking news that needed to be delivered in person.

I entered my mother's home and she greeted me with a big smile and asked if I wanted a cup of coffee. There certainly was no easy way to tell her the news, however, it had to be done before her phone started ringing with loved ones sending their condolences.

I very quietly and softly said, "Mom, I have some bad news. They found Mollie's body this morning, but we know where she is now."

Judy Calderwood's unwavering faith had been brutally shattered by your senseless act of violence.

Can you imagine Mr. Rivera, sitting across the table from your madre, and telling her Paulina is never coming home?

I am aware that you know Ulysses Felix Sandoval and his family. Uly, as I call him, was a classmate and a friend of my son, Scott. Do you know Uly was at the press conference where authorities announced that you, Cristhian Bahena Rivera, had been charged with the murder of Mollie Tibbetts?

Uly immediately started crying, but knew that he needed to call his madre before she heard it on the news.

The Felix Sandoval family was devastated. How could this young man they fed and fostered be responsible for such a heinous crime? Do you know, Mr. Rivera, that Uly's parents had to leave Brooklyn because they were receiving death threats? Do you know Uly lived in our home for his last year of high school so he could finish the senior year and play sports?

However, Uly's parents did not get to experience his senior year with him because of your senseless act. Because of your act, your then-employer, Craig Lang, lost all his employees because those workers were afraid of what would happen to them. Because of your act, Dalton Jack will never get to give Mollie the engagement ring he had purchased for her. Because of your act, Mollie's father, Rob, will never get to walk his only daughter down the aisle. Because of your act Mr. Rivera, I will never get to see my daughter become a mother.

I do hope one day Paulina has the opportunity to become a mother, but how will she ever explain to her children who their grandfather is?

This is a legacy you left behind or your only child, Mr. Rivera. I don't know whose situation is worse.

How sad …

The only winners in this case are the victims that might have been. I'm glad CBR is locked away, but I really feel minimal relief. Mollie can never return to her family and no justice is enough. Imo. But while the victims that might have been are now safe, what about past ones? I wonder if there are any other rapes, missing persons, or murders being looked into as potential links to CBR, anywhere between Iowa and Mexico?

I agree. Good point. The only winners are the victims that might have been. There is no doubt that there would have been more. Were there others in the past? We may never know. I weep for the families, the children and parents of people like CBR. They are victims too. Silent victims in a way. The incredible devastation of a crime, of a choice, like this is unfathomable.

Indeed, and Mollie's mother, in all her despair, showed compassion for CBR's family. I feel her impact statement was addressing them as much as him. CBR might not be capable of remorse, imo, so the words could be like white noise to him. But they speaks volumes to everyone else when there is nothing left to do but heal.

And through it all CBR sat there like an emotionless lump, totally disconnected from everything. His pathetic defense team prattling around like manic chihuahuas explaining his demeanor as that of a kind respectful young man who can’t understand the language though he’s lived here for years...and he sits there...playing his part. To me, it seemed more like the sign of a cold cold heart or there is something very very wrong with him.

When this started, I thought maybe he was just a young man that made a terrible terrible decision one evening and then panicked. But as the case went along, and the trial came, his demeanor, his ridiculous story/testimony, I realized he is just a sociopath. He feels no remorse for Mollie or what he did. And he probably never will.

Mollie Tibbetts recap: Officer recalls Cristhian Rivera interrogation
"I brought you here, didn't I? So that means I did it, right? I don't remember how I did it," Romero said the defendant told her.

Romero said she remembers “he shrugged his shoulder” and told her “I didn't think about it." Asked if he felt bad, the defendant said "No," she testified.

I have followed this case from day one. I am truly sickened by the whole thing. We have all seen what the bad news couple, Chad and Jennifer, will do to drag this out. I am happy about the prison sentence, but cautious moving forward.

I was working and could have taken a break to watch but decided not to waste my time on him. Rot in prison piece of garbage. I honestly can't stand the sight of him.
Instead I made a cappuccino and went outside with my dog and prayed for Mollie's loved ones.
I guess the piece of garbage can appeal...and say what...the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles did it? Oh wait he tried that already. Well maybe Dorothy and Toto..or Sponge Bob..Buz Lightyear?
Or just a thought, maybe get CBR a mirror.

It is absolutely horrifying to me how these killers can feel absolutely no remorse and could not care less about the fact they have taken an innocent person’s life. How can they feel they have to right to take the life of a person? Would they think it was perfectly fine if someone did what they have done to them? I don’t understand how the life of a person has no value to these monsters like their victims are worthless and I don’t know what can be done to address it. They must have psychological issues to be like this.

I am so glad the monster will be in prison till the day he dies as he deserves. Thank you to the Judge, Jury and Prosecutors for all their efforts in convicting him.

Rest In Peace Mollie. I am so sorry Mollie lost her life I am sure she would have lived a great life and the fact she and her family have been robbed of that due to an evil individual is a heartbreaking tragedy. Mollie’s loved ones continue to be in my thoughts and prayers.

I think you have to be psychologically damaged to commit a crime like this anyway. But even if not, after its done, I think a killer does mentally distance themselves from what happened rather than actually deal with what they have done. I don't know, I am sure people study this sort of thing. I just can't imagine being in that situation. Facing life in prison, knowing you will never again be free, never get to hold his daughter, or eat a good meal again, never get to walk in the sun. Add on the horror of dealing with the fact that you ended a beautiful life. Unimaginable.

Well I wish I felt like you do.
But I don't think they care. They like what they did..and usually do it again.
They like it. They get something out of it...that's what matters to them.
The only thing they don't like is getting caught.

Oh I suppose you are right. I am sure many of these rapist/killers relive the event in their heads for the rest of their lives. its why many of them eventually will brag about it to other cell mates, sharing details. It is disgusting.
