Missing woman disappears after road trip with boyfriend as mom reveals message to authorities

Gabby Petito, 22, set out on a road trip with her boyfriend in a converted camper van in early July to tour National Parks, but she disappeared in late August and her family hasn't heard from her in more than two weeks. Now, her mother is pleading for help finding her daughter.

Nicole Schmidt, Petito's mother, said that the last verbal conversation she had with her daughter was on Aug. 25.

"I don't know if she left Grand Teton or not," Schmidt said. "I did receive a text from her on the 27th and the 30th, but I don't know if it was technically her or not, because it was just a text. I didn't verbally speak to her."

The couple stopped in Grand Teton National Park on Aug. 25, Petito's last known location, before a planned trip to Yellowstone. They were traveling in a 2012 Ford white van that was converted into a camper.

A spokesperson for the Jackson Police Department said that an "attempt to locate" call was recently filed for Petito. The Suffolk County Police Department is also investigating the case. Suffolk County PD declined to comment on Sunday.

Petito is 5’5" and has blonde hair and blue eyes. She has a triangle tattoo with flowers on her left arm and a "Let it be" tattoo on her right arm.

I didn't think the van looked that messy. They were going to a new camping area, all their camping stuff was in there. Food, tent, pillows, blankets, etc. I used to go camping 2-3 times a summer and believe me, the van I used to use to camp from was MUCH more messy than their van after a day or two. I can't believe all the van campers here saying you have to be organized to camp. No, you don't! I never was. I went camping this summer just once with my husband and dog and by day 3 both of our cars were a messy disaster. To me, the mess doesn't indicate anything, but it obviously bothered Gabby. When I heard her say she was trying to keep the van "clean" I thought, you are fighting a losing battle girl. You are camping in the backwoods of a national park and you cannot expect that van to stay clean. Keep your tent clean, but who cares about the van. The van is for hauling stuff and driving, IMO.

Not taking BL's side here, but she was not being realistic about dirt etc. in that tiny van. In my experience, camping = dirt and messiness. Gabby, RIP, might not have been a great candidate for the camping lifestyle.

MOO I think when people say "You have to be ... to do ..." what they should be saying is "I have to be ... ", because there is never one way to do anything. I think there should be a rule similar to MOO to handle this

The preliminary autopsy seems to confirm what most of us suspected the moment we heard about the guy who went on an extended road trip with his girlfriend and came home alone …

I’m glad they were able to find Gabby and hope they find BL alive so he can answer questions and face the consequences.

Maybe a dumb question. How can they rule it a homicide but not determine how? If you don’t see a cause of death how do you know it was homicide? Or could it be multiple injuries and have to determine which killed her? Confused!

Well, to add to that which others have proffered, they say this when they can be fairly assured it isn't a suicide; i.e., that people could not self-inflict these wounds.

My son brought up a thought. Perhaps BL went south to the Everglades and then to the keys. A hike is estimated at 39 hrs., and he could have utilized the Tamiami Trail. If he left early Tuesday, and not reported missing until Friday evening, he had more than enough time to land in the Everglades and then to the keys. This is pure speculation. I just thought my son's angle was interesting and wanted to share it.

My heart breaks for the family of GP. As I had watched that long bodycam video of when GP and BL were pulled over, my analysis of BL’s demeanor made me suspicious and sadly it turned out to be true.

A few threads ago someone else mentioned it’s well known in this area that cars can’t park there overnight or they get a notification (the note that was left on the car). BL’s parents knew he went there to hike so they probably knew the car may be towed so they went next day to pick it up I guess.

Something was said about police leaving a note to remove the car. My question is -how did they know about the note?

The FBI confirms that the body discovered at a Wyoming national park was that of 22-year-old Gabby Petito whose boyfriend is wanted for questioning. The local coroner says the manner of death was homicide.
