The father of a 'brilliant' Cambridge-educated primary school teacher found murdered in a park has been left a 'broken man' - as it emerged a woman searching for her lost necklace called police after a dog walker discovered the body.

Police believe a stranger may have targeted Sabina Nessa, 28, before dumping her body in a meadow, which lay undiscovered in Cator Park, south-east London, for almost 24 hours.

Officers were called at 5.32pm on Saturday after the teacher's body was found near the OneSpace community centre, a popular area with families and dog walkers in Kidbrooke.

A man in his forties was arrested on suspicion of murder a few hours after her body was found by a dog walker. But yesterday he was released under investigation pending further inquiries. Scotland Yard says that to reassure worried Londoners its officers will be patrolling the crime scene and open spaces across the boroughs of Lewisham and Greenwich.

MailOnline can reveal that on Friday night there will be a vigil close to where she was found amid ongoing tensions in the city over the safety of women after the abduction and murder of Sarah Everard by Met Police officer Wayne Couzens earlier this year. Flowers have been laid close to the crime scene today, where forensics officers are looking through long grass and carrying out finger tip searches.

I wonder, does that mean an extra 36 hours, or from when they started questioning?

Was just about to post about this. Previous media reports have stated that the suspect hit SN over the head with an unidentified object, this article also includes a picture of Police searching Pegler square - I wonder if the weapon/item used has not been recovered yet?

Good spot @Scorpiette, thanks for posting. I imagine they will have a lot to do in terms of forensics, any phone/computer recovered. The Micra photographed in the police car pound does look like it had just been valeted, which could be slowing forensics down a bit.

I'm not sure if this is the only car they are looking for, as the police have asked for people with information about the silver car to continue to come forward.

I think that if they were still looking for a secondcar it would have been made very clear ,especially if they need the public's help.

I think it is an extra 36 hours . They already have had over 36 hours and can have up to 72 hours before another extension.

My understanding is they want extra information about the Micra,where it had been before and after the attack

could be tricky without a reg plate. Not sure I’d necessarily recall a grey Nissan Micra, now a red Jaguar E type maybe…

It means 36 hours in total, but if that's still not enough they can apply for a second extension up to a total of 96 hours. NB that as @ApparentlyInDenial was saying earlier, because of the late hour when the suspect was apprehended, he would have to be allowed to sleep before questioning could begin and the PACE clock started ticking, so the first 36 hours won't expire until this evening if I've calculated correctly.

They would need to be able to demonstrate that the extra time was likely to be fruitful (i.e. not just in a vague hope that it will shake something out of the suspect unexpectedly) but also that they don't already have enough to charge (as once that threshold is reached, questioning has to stop).

That's afaik. I'm not LE. @Angleterre would be able to paint a better picture of how that decision is made if she's around.

A a local shopkeeper told the Mirror he recognised him in CCTV footage released by the Metropolitan Police last week as he had been a regular customer, but he hadn't seen him for about a month.

He said he was a takeaway delivery driver who "would never really speak, he would just keep his head down".

“He tended to get phone top ups and not much else.”

His car was recovered a five-minute walk from the address, where he had reportedly been living for several years with a partner.''

People often become familiar with cars parked on their street and do often notice a different one. It is possible he has been living in his car so people might have noticed someone answering his description near his car.

One mystery that‘s been discussed repeatedly on this thread is the timing of the CCTV footage. According to the official police statement it was recorded BEFORE the attack. This is puzzling. I also struggled to understand why sb acts suspiciouly when he spots a camera, especially if it is a spontaneous, opportunstic crime. Surely at this point in time he didn‘t know he would meet a potential victim that evening so there is no need to turn your face away from a camera or pull your hood up. The only plausible explanation is that it was a premeditated offence and he didn‘t want to be seen in the area at all. This however then suggests very poor planning.

Coming to think about it and considering what we learned today about recent incidents in Eastbourne, it makes complete sense now. His behavior on the CCTV recording is completely unrelated to the actual murder of SN. The reason he’s trying to hide from the canera is that he‘s basically on the run already having committed a rape in Eastbourne just two weeks prior. He doesn‘t want to be tracked down.

Restaurants close to where a man was arrested on suspicion of murdering primary school teacher Sabina Nessa have been told not to empty their bins, as detectives continue to question a former pizza delivery driver.

The 36-year-old suspect, who is originally from Albania, was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning at his flat in Eastbourne, East Sussex.

The man, who lived with his girlfriend, used to work as a Dominos delivery driver until July this year, according to locals.

Police raided his flat at 3am and removed a silver Nissan Micra car several hours later from a nearby street.

Forensics officers and specialist detectives remained at the scene on Monday as questioning of the suspect continued.

Two chefs at a nearby Japanese restaurant said police officers had told them not to empty their bins.

Neighbours in the rundown area of Eastbourne claimed they had heard arguing coming from the flat several hours before police arrived.


One neighbour said: “There was shouting coming from the house. It was very loud. It’s been a huge shock. His girlfriend was a character. She fed the seagulls and talked to them.

“He was always helpful. A couple of times he would help me with the buggy and my child. I’ve been here for two years and he was always there during that time.”


The man was arrested on suspicion of murdering 28-year-old Miss Nessa, whose body was found in a park just yards from her home in Kidbrooke, south-east London.

His detention followed an appeal in which Scotland Yard released CCTV footage of a man they wanted to question.

Ms Nessa, who was a year one teacher at Rushey Green primary school in Catford, is thought to have been attacked as she left her flat at around 8.30pm on September 17 in order to visit a local bar, where she was due to meet a friend.

Her body was discovered the following day at around 5.30pm in Cator Park, hidden under leaves.

The murder has reignited the debate around women’s safety on the streets of London. On Friday evening, hundreds gathered in Kidbrooke for a vigil to mark Ms Nessa’s life.
