Missing woman disappears after road trip with boyfriend as mom reveals message to authorities

Gabby Petito, 22, set out on a road trip with her boyfriend in a converted camper van in early July to tour National Parks, but she disappeared in late August and her family hasn't heard from her in more than two weeks. Now, her mother is pleading for help finding her daughter.

Nicole Schmidt, Petito's mother, said that the last verbal conversation she had with her daughter was on Aug. 25.

"I don't know if she left Grand Teton or not," Schmidt said. "I did receive a text from her on the 27th and the 30th, but I don't know if it was technically her or not, because it was just a text. I didn't verbally speak to her."

The couple stopped in Grand Teton National Park on Aug. 25, Petito's last known location, before a planned trip to Yellowstone. They were traveling in a 2012 Ford white van that was converted into a camper.

A spokesperson for the Jackson Police Department said that an "attempt to locate" call was recently filed for Petito. The Suffolk County Police Department is also investigating the case. Suffolk County PD declined to comment on Sunday.

Petito is 5’5" and has blonde hair and blue eyes. She has a triangle tattoo with flowers on her left arm and a "Let it be" tattoo on her right arm.

This is based completely on opinion...I think he is a take someone else out before he takes himself out kind of guy. I do think he is alive, with help from family, and if LE closes in he will not think twice to kill someone else or take hostages. Again, JMO. They need to find him.

Can we take a minute to discuss how hard it is to strangle someone to death? It's not like on TV. They pass out long before they die. So he would have to have continued to choke her for a couple of minutes after she stopped fighting. It's hard to call this kind of manual strangulation rage/crime of passion because a strangler does have to put so much effort into it.

I believe he strangled her, but I seriously wonder what took place for the "blood splatters" to be in many pictures. Of course, we get the watered down version because the safety of the case is at stake. But I definitely ponder a serious fight before the eventual strangulation. How awful, my heart is breaking.

Strangulation is not always premeditated. And it is a prosecutors job to make that charge and prove it beyond a reasonable doubt. Premeditation is not something found in at the time of an autopsy.

How is strangulation not premeditated? Premeditation only has to be a few seconds. It takes minutes to strangle someone.

If there was blood splatter on the rocks, they would have collected the rocks into evidence IMO.

He like grabbed me like with his nail and I guess that’s why it looks, I definitely have a cut right here because I can feel it and when I touch it it burns.

I thought the blood splatters were all speculation. Nobody knows for sure what the police were marking with the spray paint in those photos.

No matter how much Bertolino tries to spin things, there is no way he can get around that Gabby was manually strangled to death and his client is on the run.

Let him keep on releasing statements though as he does leak out things along with his spin.
