President Volodymyr Zelensky, in his first speech to the UN Security Council since the invasion began, called the Russians war criminals who he said had killed families, raped women in front of their children and left Ukraine “filled with mass graves.”
A technical problem with President Zelensky’s video at the UN Security Council was resolved. Images of charred, rotting and slaughtered bodies from several Ukraine cities filled the screen at the meeting, momentarily shocking its members into silence.

Sbm from @PommyMommy

I sincerely hope the unspeakable acts of the Russian soldiers puts to rest the notion that the Russian soldiers are scared, bewildered, don't know why they're fighting, and so on.

Raping little girls, tying up civilians and then shooting them in the head; these are not the acts of confused young soldiers simply following orders. This is bloodlust.

IMO and everyone's, I'm sure.

Zelenskyy criticizes United Nations for inaction, details atrocities in Ukraine (nbcnews.com)
[...]

"They shot and killed women outside their houses," Zelenskyy said. "They killed entire families, adults and children, and they tried to burn the bodies."

The Ukrainian leader said civilians were fatally shot in the back of the heads after being tortured. Some were shot in the streets and thrown into wells and others were killed in their own apartments by grenades, he said.

“The civilians were crushed by tanks while sitting in their cars in the middle of the road,” he continued. “They cut off limbs, cut their throats, slashed their throats. Women were raped and killed in front of their children. Their tongues were pulled out only because the aggressor did not hear what they wanted to hear from them.”

[...]

Zelenskyy suggested that the Security Council cannot work effectively when Russia is one of its permanent members. “The world has yet to see what they have done in other occupied cities and regions of our country,” he said.

[...]

Russian soldiers are deliberately blocking cities, creating mass starvation, Zelenskyy said. He said they also shoot columns of civilians on the road who are trying to escape and blow up shelters where innocent people hide from airstrikes. Zelenskyy also said the Russian military had abducted more than 2,000 children and has been looting cities and villages it has captured.

[...]

He said the Security Council can remove Russia from its body so that “it cannot block decisions about its own aggression, its own war and then do everything that we can do to establish peace.” Or, he said, the U.N. can reform itself or dissolve itself altogether.

Russia-Ukraine war: In Chinese media, the US is the villain | Russia-Ukraine war News | Al Jazeera
By Rachel Cheung
6 Apr 2022
''Hong Kong, China – China may portray itself as a neutral party in the war in Ukraine, but the message it communicates to its audience at home tells a different story.

State news agency Xinhua calls the war “a special military operation” and “the Russia-Ukraine crisis” but never refers to it as an invasion. CCTV, the state broadcaster, mentioned civilian casualties for the first time only three weeks after Russia invaded. More recently, state outlets doubled down on the Russian conspiracy theory claiming the US is funding the development of biological weapons in Ukraine, including migratory birds that could spread avian viruses in Russia.''

''Another overarching theme of Chinese state media coverage is the depiction of the US as the instigator of the conflict, which is part of a broader narrative peddled by Chinese diplomats and the government propaganda machine, according to analysts.

“This is one of the most consistent frames we have seen throughout. And the Chinese central leadership have really shown that they’re dedicated to the disinformation campaign,” said Bandurski. “It’s a proxy information war that China is waging here. In the long term, it’s about undermining the credibility of the US and the US-led international system.''

Has there been any word on the “hundreds” of Ukrainians that were reportedly kidnapped some weeks ago and supposedly taken to Russia? (From video post a few weeks ago). I don’t like where my head is going with this, thinking Hitler /Mengele type-stuff.

Also, it seems those videos I saw a few weeks back were not far off from the truth, citizens bound with hands behind their back and being tortured, supposedly including women and children. I was hoping they were fake.

So many shades of Hitler times.

They say history repeats itself, but I never thought we’d see....

We know evil and darkness exists, especially from the cases we see on these forums, and Ukraine, we know, is not the only nation to experience modern day genocide and war. Some horrors do not always reach the front pages of the news.

The point here is this is one of the worst things I’ve ever seen in my lifetime, and I think that says a lot.

This needs to be over, it never should have happened, how and when does this end, which was a question presented on the first pages of this thread.

I’m think the only reason this continues is perhaps bc of R’s nuclear capabilities. Anything could trigger...so the world walks on eggshells, in the grips of a madman.

It’s all just so unbelievable, how someone, how some people can commit such atrocities. This is not a new concept here on WS, as we ask this same question in countless threads.

But here we are talking about the large scale, thousands, millions affected. There is no going back, as stated on page 1/day 1.

Could I have anticipated it would be this bad? I don’t think I did, during all the lead up when an invasion was predicted. But of course it’s hard to conceive such things.

I admire the strength of those who can hang in here. Of course it’s the Ukrainian people who really have to suffer these atrocities first hand, and be strong.

Please God, please make this end, please, begging.

Mobile crematoria in #Mariupol

Mayor of Mariupol Vadim Boychenko said today that #Russian mobile crematoria have started operating in the city.

According to him, tens of thousands of people could have died in Mariupol and the cremation, "covering up the traces of crimes". https://t.co/mVj6dC3xK4

It is precisely the number of civilian casualties, Boichenko says, that is the reason that #Russia has not yet agreed on an evacuation plan, according to which #Turkey will take civilians by sea.

It's a sign of protest. Some background:

March 2017
How the rubber ducky became a potent protest symbol (smh.com.au)

In September, Russian corruption fighter and would-be presidential candidate Alexei Navalny published the first episode of his investigation into the palaces and estates used by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. A video filmed from a drone showed an expensively renovated 18th century manor, featuring a pond complete with a duck house. Navalny recalled the scandal of Sir Peter Wiggers, the UK legislator who had tried to claim the cost of installing a waterfowl lodge as part of his parliamentary expenses. The Medvedev case, Navalny clamed, was far more outrageous.

Russian social networks picked up the duck house story. Memes placed Medvedev's ducky on the Forbes list of the richest Russians; people expressed their willingness to quack and dive for bugs on the pond for a chance to live in the house. Over time, Medvedev's duck morphed into the floating yellow toy the Serbian leader, Aleksandar Vucic, saw on the Moscow protest signs.

Ukraine live updates: Dutch seize 14 Russian yachts; more US sanctions (usatoday.com)
''Dutch customs officials placed 14 yachts at five shipyards under "special supervision" on Wednesday because they are being built or repaired for wealthy Russians.

Finance Minister Wopke Hoekstra said 12 yachts are under construction and two are undergoing maintenance. The boats will not be allowed to leave the country because of the export ban and sanctions imposed on hundreds of wealthy supporters of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Netherlands has been criticized for its slow start to enforcing sanctions.

Russian owners made up 9% of all superyacht owners in 2021, making Russia the second largest ownership country behind the United States, according to Superyacht Times.

The U.S. government on Monday seized a 254-foot yacht in Spain owned by an oligarch with close ties to Putin. Other countries also have seized the luxury boats.''

'No one will ever listen to Russia:' Why Ukraine is winning the propaganda war | CBC News
"Its standing in the world is damaged, probably beyond repair," said Ilya Metveev, a St. Petersburg-based political analyst. Moscow "understands now that it is useless to push Russia's narrative in the West. Whatever they try, this will not work."

''Between efforts like this and the stirring speeches delivered almost daily by Zelensky — often directly addressing foreign decision makers or the public in Western countries — Garner said Kyiv has been "mounting a very clever, really smart info war."

Ukraine's success depends on it. Kyiv needs to keep the West onside, to keep billions of dollars in much-needed weaponry flowing across the borders from NATO to its fighters, and to keep tough Western economic sanctions pressing Russia.''

''The Zelensky posts, sometimes done as selfies outside with only street lights at night, and always in a casual T-shirt, may "look ad hoc and somewhat unscripted," said Garner, but are almost certainly "productions that have been planned and thought through."

Zelensky's address to the U.K. Parliament invokes wartime prime minister Winston Churchill. His speech to Ottawa stresses a first-name relationship with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and includes familiar Canadian references. And, always, hitting the right notes to portray Ukraine as the feisty underdog who deserves help from the West.

In contrast, Russian President Vladimir Putin appears belligerent and isolated, shown sitting at a huge table in the Kremlin. His efforts at waging an information war seem as troubled as his war on the ground.

"He is surrounded by symbols of Russian power," said Anton Shirikov, a doctoral student at the University of Wisconsin who is researching political propaganda.

"He's saying to the West: 'Look, I'm frightening. I can do lots of terrible things.'"
