NV NV - Multiple Sets of Human Remains Found in Lake Mead

Body dumps and possible drownings too. I imagine there are plenty more.

Living on a Great Lake, we know there are hundreds of bodies in there. That is not even counting animal drownings etc. That's why we have treatment plants. :)
Yes. Lake Superior is so deep and cold that bodies supposedly either don't decay or decay very slowly. There's no telling how many bodies would be found if you could somehow drag every square foot of the bottom of that lake. Crater Lake in Oregon is even deeper, so there are probably quite a few bodies at the bottom of it, too. Lake Tahoe isn't far behind, and that lake is popular with tourists who probably don't realize that they're swimming with dead human bodies.

Second body found at Lake Mead week after corpse was found in barrel

"Las Vegas police announced over the weekend that more skeletal remains were found at Callville Bay within the Lake Mead National Recreation Area"

"

Lindsey and Lynette Melvin reportedly found the skeletal remains at Callville Bay within the Lake Mead National Recreation Area in Nevada around 2 p.m. Saturday, KTNV reported.

Photos of the grisly discovery show a skull, complete with teeth, nestled into the dirt and sand near the lake's shore. Other bones are seen sticking out of the sand at various angles. "

very graphic photos, seems that authorities didn't really investigate much if they were just right there on the shore line.

I’m relatively sure it was not Jimmy Hoffa,” he laughed, referring to the former labor boss who disappeared in 1975. But he added that a lot of his former clients seemed interested in “climate control” — mob speak for keeping the lake level up and bodies down in their watery graves.

Here's WS links for two of the three:
Since Pappas disappeared along with his car, I wouldn't be surprised if they find him in it one day, whether or not it's at Lake Mead.

The article says his car was spotted four days after he vanished in a casino parking lot. I read his thread on here where it says his car was never seen again. Was that the last time his car was seen, then? If that's true about his car being spotted then he did not drive himself into Lake Mead or other water by accident or something. I would presume he was deceased by then.. Of course if he had been killed and they still had his body they could have put it in the vehicle and put it in Lake Mead or another body of water. Just something I noticed. It sounds like he was murdered (and robbed?) by whoever wanted to "buy" his boat( as has happened in online cases involving Craigslist etc decades later, although he didn't have his boat with him) or as the article says, it may have been a mob ruse to murder him. Perhaps also he did not tell his wife the truth about where he was going, and he was going to meet someone about something mob related instead?

A lake recedes, a body emerges, and the ghost of Johnny Pappas rises in my memory – The Nevada Independent. I wonder if there any witnesses at the restaurant who saw him, if they met inside the restaurant.
Thanks. The linked article says "His car was found three days later in the Circus Circus parking lot with the keys in the ignition." So maybe the NamUs info about the car being missing too is wrong. I'm guessing since they had the keys, someone must have checked out the trunk. MOO

Francis Anthony Rossana
DLC: April 20, 1989
Missing from: Las Vegas, NV
Missing age: 67
Circumstances: Francis “Frank” Rossana was last seen on April 20, 1989 in Las Vegas, Nevada. His vehicle was later found at the McCarran Airport with no signs of a struggle. Frank was the owner of a bar in Las Vegas at the time of his disappearance and had no plans to travel from the area.

Additional info: Frank owned the Serene Room, which was a bar in Las Vegas. He had lost about $500,000 dollars after the Las Vegas-based Power Securities Corp. folded. The business shut down about a week after the NY Attorney General accused it of defrauding investors out of hundreds of thousands of dollars. Richard Marchese, who ran the company, had been accused of making threats against his detractors and was later put on trial for multiple counts of mail fraud and money laundering.

FBI assisting with investigation into body found in barrel at Lake Mead - KLAS
<snipped & BBM>
The FBI is assisting with the investigation into the body found in a barrel at Lake Mead, a department spokeswoman confirmed Wednesday.

[…]

The spokeswoman would not comment further on the reason for the agency’s assistance. It is not uncommon for the FBI to assist local police in high-profile investigations that may require additional resources or that could involve a suspect who crossed state lines.

[…]

Investigators with Metro police and the Clark County coroner’s office had said they would try to pull DNA from the remains, though it was not clear Wednesday if that task had been completed.

As of last month, Metro police had received dozens of tips about the possible identity of the person.

One was in a barrel. Las Vegas Police identified the remains as those of a homicide victim; a man who had been shot, likely between the mid-1970s and early 1980s.

The second set of remains were found in a newly surfaced sand bar and no foul play is suspected.
As authorities work to identify the remains, theories and folklore around the who, why, and how are circulating.

Oscar Goodman is Las Vegas’ former longtime mayor. He says the city was born from the mob and is unlike any other city. “If they were able to identify the caliber of bullet, that would tell them an awful lot as to whether or not this is a “mob hit” or not,” Goodman said. “Ordinarily, the mob in those days, if they were going to kill somebody, they took the person or they found the person outside of Nevada, outside of Las Vegas.”

While there are still questions around the grim discoveries in Lake Mead, there seems to be one thing that’s certain: more unidentified bodies could be located.

“The biggest thing for us is that we need to start preparing for these to be more frequent events for us,” said forensic anthropologist and professor Jennifer Byrnes, of the University of Nevada – Las Vegas.
Byrnes says people in her profession are going to start receiving more cold cases from unexpected areas. She adds climate change is affecting her profession.

With water levels receding, wildfires increasing, and the frequency of storms like hurricanes, Byrnes believes discoveries, like those emerging from the once deep waters of Lake Mead, are only the beginning.

“Glaciers are melting and so those are revealing bodies…so there’s a lot of different examples of how climate change is impacting forensic science and human identification,” she says.
