GUILTY CO - Jason Schaefer, 33, mail carrier fatally shot, Longmont, 13 Oct 2021

Andrew Ritchie Second Person To Be Charged With First-Degree Murder In Mail Carrier Jason Schaefer's Death

10/26/21

CBS4) – A 34-year-old Loveland man who investigators believe wasn’t at the scene of the shooting of postal worker Jason Schaefer but is complicit in the crime was charged with first-degree murder on Tuesday. The suspected shooter, Schaefer’s ex-girlfriend Devon Schreiner, also faces a first-degree murder charge. Andrew James Ritchie was arrested last week and he had a hearing in Boulder County Court on Tuesday.

This is heartbreaking - Jason's mom and stepdad retired from the USPS a couple years ago and looked forward to traveling to visit Jason and their grandson.

Lori Hebert said that she and Chris are proud to have been postal employees.

“This was a great job, I have no complaints about it,” she said.

In retirement, the couple plans on taking a trip to Colorado to see her son and grandson—she said she thinks that they will probably travel and relax more afterwards; he saids he’d like to “just stop and smell the roses a little bit.”

The idea of being retired though, still seems a bit surreal.

Andrew Ritchie, 34, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Jason Schaefer, 33, and was set to stand trial starting Aug. 8.

But the codefendant in the case, Devan Schreiner, recently had her own trial in the case pushed back to Oct. 10, and attorneys agreed it made more sense for Ritchie’s trial to take place after Schreiner’s.

Defense attorneys filed a motion to continue Ritchie’s trial, and prosecutors did not oppose the motion. Boulder District Judge Thomas Mulvahill granted the motion in court Thursday, and set Ritchie for a new trial starting Dec. 5.

[..]

Ritchie and Schreiner were originally set for a joint trial, but Mulvahill ordered that the cases be severed.

Schreiner and Ritchie are accused of plotting to kill Schaefer while he was delivering mail in southwest Longmont on Oct. 13.

Two employees of the Longmont post office, upon arriving at the scene, asked police if the assailant was Schreiner, noting the two had been in a custody dispute.

Just two days before the shooting, Schaefer had filed a request to modify parenting time, and witnesses also said Schreiner appeared upset that Schaefer had recently started dating Schreiner’s 19-year-old sister.

Devan Schreiner, 27, and Andrew James Ritchie, 35, are both charged with first-degree murder in the death of Jason Schaefer, 33, Schreiner’s ex-boyfriend and the father of her child.

After a judge ruled the two defendants must be tried separately, Ritchie was set to begin trial on Dec. 5 while Schreiner was set for Feb. 27.

Ritchie is now set for a hearing on the admissibility of the evidence on April 3 to be followed by his trial on April 10.

Attorneys made opening arguments in a Longmont murder case Tuesday morning, as prosecutors argued the defendant planned and carried out the shooting while defense attorneys said she was the victim of manipulation.

Devan Schreiner, 27, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Jason Schaefer, 33, Schreiner’s ex-boyfriend and the father of her child.

Schreiner is set for a 10-day trial in Boulder District Court that began Monday with jury selection.

[..]

Boulder Deputy District Attorney Alison Brand said Schaefer had started a relationship with Schreiner’s younger sister and a few days before the shooting had filed for a change in their custody agreement.

Brand said texts show Schreiner had become “increasingly upset” with Schaefer, at one point saying she was going to throw a party in the woods in which people should “bring their own shovels.”

[..]

Defense attorneys did not contest that Schreiner shot Schaefer, but said she was manipulated into doing so by a jealous Ritchie and did not possess the mindset necessary to be found guilty of first-degree murder.

“She shot Mr. Schaefer,” defense attorney Megan Stewart said. “But those bullets came from a force far beyond Ms. Schriener.”

[..]

Outside the presence of the jury, defense attorneys have indicated they would be asking that the jury be allowed to consider second-degree murder as a lesser included charge at the conclusion of the trial.

Ritchie is also charged with first-degree murder and is set for his own trial in April.

A jury has found Devan Schreiner guilty of first-degree murder in the deadly shooting of a USPS postal worker in Longmont. The shooting happened Oct. 13, 2021 in the Somerset Meadows neighborhood.

It was later revealed that Schreiner was the ex-girlfriend of Schaefer.

Schreiner was found guilty on Tuesday afternoon and immediately sentenced to life in prison without parole.

District Attorney Michael Dougherty stated, "This defendant is a cold-blooded murderer. She took steps to get away with this brutal murder, but she underestimated two things. First, the victim was very much loved by his family and co-workers; the information and support they provided was critical. Also, the US Postal Inspectors and Longmont detectives brought their best efforts and, along with our prosecution team, ensured justice was done. As always, we appreciate the time and service of the jurors."

LONGMONT, Colo. — A Boulder County jury on Tuesday convicted a woman of first-degree murder in the shooting of her ex-boyfriend, postal worker Jason Schaefer, as he was working his route in Longmont in October 2021.

Following a weeklong trial, the jury found Devan Schreiner guilty. Judge Patrick Butler immediately sentenced her to life in prison without parole, which is the mandatory sentence under Colorado law.

"This has been a living nightmare. I have not slept since his murder," Schaefer's mother said in a victim impact statement read by prosecutors. "Our lives have been destroyed forever."

[..]

Schaefer's mother said in her statement that Schreiner claims to love her son but noted that the now 7-year-old boy has no parents and is living with relatives in Connecticut.

"He does not deserve to be without his father," her statement says.

The day of the shooting, Oct. 13, 2021, the prosecution claimed Ritchie and Schreiner started the day together. Then, they told the jury Ritchie followed Schaefer on his mail delivery route and watched him for hours while on the phone with Schreiner.

The defense said Schreiner shot and killed Schaefer, but that her mind and intent were "corrupted" by Ritchie.

Ritchie is also charged with first-degree murder after deliberation. He has pleaded not guilty and is set to appear in court for a motions hearing on May 30.

The jury heard about five days’ worth of testimony before receiving the case Monday afternoon and deliberating for about eight hours before returning a verdict just after 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Because the charge carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, Boulder District Judge Patrick Butler proceeded immediately to sentencing and ordered Schreiner to spend the rest of her life in the Colorado Department of Corrections.

Schreiner approached her ex-boyfriend, who was working at a row of mailboxes, and she shot him three times, including once in the face, prosecutors said.

They said Andrew James "AJ" Ritchie, Shreiner’s boyfriend, helped her plan the murder after Schaefer filed for additional custody of the child he shared with Schreiner. Ritchie, 34, followed Schaefer throughout the day of the postal worker’s death before he was shot, prosecutors said. Ritchie was working in Littleton's Federal Correctional Institution when he was arrested, according to an affidavit.

Shreiner had previously told Shaefer that Ritchie would shoot him, the document shows.

Two weeks before the shooting, Schreiner had been fired from her job at the post office in Longmont over a dispute with Schaefer, according to the affidavit.

The jury instruction and deliberation in the murder trial of Devan Rebecca Schreiner, 27, started on Monday afternoon after the prosecution and defense rested their cases.

The trial began on Feb. 27. On Tuesday, the jury returned with the verdict. They had found Schreiner guilty of first-degree murder.

The judge immediately sentenced Schreiner to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The trial for a man accused of plotting with a woman to kill her ex-boyfriend began with opening statements Tuesday.

Andrew “AJ” Ritchie, 36, is charged with first-degree murder after deliberation for reportedly conspiring with Devan Schreiner, 28, to kill Jason Schaefer, 33.
