Coronavirus COVID-19 - Global Health Pandemic #109

I know people who have been very careful up to now, but now they are living like there is no Covid. Some of these people are elderly so I don't get it. I am living my life like I did when the pandemic first showed itself, basically I stay home except to the grocery store or the doctor's office. Have not had lunch or dinner with friends in 3 years. I miss that. No dining in restaurants: miss that, but like you, I really really don't want even a "mild" version of Covid----and I don't believe we should just live with it, but that is where we are now--- and the CDC has apparently thrown in the towel and gone along with that concept.

All the people I know who were vaxxed and boosted and got COVID had pretty severe cases. Most were not bad enough to go to the doctor, but all had the high fever, fatigue and problems breathing, usually for a few weeks duration. Most were people who enjoy going out to eat a lot. I'll pass on it and order out.

We recently took a 2 week trip to Europe and came home w/ no COVID, primarily because the countries we visited encouraged masking indoors and the airlines we traveled on had strict mask rules, especially for the overseas part of the flight.

Nice that you were able to travel to Europe- sounds like the countries you visited have more sense than we do in the United States---

We have friends (elderly like us) who traveled to France last month and came home Covid-free also. So far, I'm not ready to get on an airplane again or travel with a group. And I'm not up for a road trip if it's more than a few hours to the destination. I feel like a big old stick-in-the-mud!

I had just retired and BAM the gates closed! But, that’s ok. I’m alive. Some of my friends aren’t.

Based on reports I've heard from other family, friends, etc. who traveled by plane recently, your risk seems to be much lower if you're flying an airline where everyone had to wear a mask. You have to be careful moving through airports, too. I've had no qualms about traveling by car if I'm in my own car and with others who don't have it. Just be careful when you stop to get gas, go inside to pay or get a bottle of water, etc. I went inside a couple of restaurants, but kept my mask on, ate quickly and only lifted it a small amount to take a bite. Also, always keep using that hand sanitizer/washing hands. Staying in a hotel overseas was ok, but keep your mask on in the lobby, restaurant, any time you leave your room. Keep a fan going or windows open. We only stayed in hotels that said they met their country's standard for clean rooms. We traveled in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. All were very professional, sensible about COVID restrictions. Even traveled on longer train trips via high speed rail. Everyone wore a mask, no one questioned it or got upset about it.

I'm sorry that some of your friends didn't survive Covid. How sad.
Only one didn’t believed in vaccinations. (A family member) It was a horrific death. Her husband couldn’t visit her as he wasn’t vaxxed, nor could her 88 year old mother, for the same reason. Her widowed husband is now vaxxed and still grumbling against the government. Her mother still refuses. The others were all vaxxed.

I don't necessarily think its the official position of federal health officials, its the position of the CDC, one of many federally funded health & research agencies. JMO Researchers and clinicians disagree all the time, a good thing.

I'm a senior citizen and I recently began a new fitness regimen. Its going very well. I don't feel like getting COVID 19, period. Some healthy folks still get serious cases. We don't know the long term effects. I also don't feel like getting polio or smallpox, either.

I don't plan to "live with it". That does sound like a public relations/advertising meme. JMO
"Think" on NBC are strictly opinion pieces that encourage the reader to do exactly that: "think" and consider the content and decide for yourself how you feel about said topic. I wasn't necessarily in complete agreement but thought the feature was worthy of reading and consideration by anyone who is interested in learning more about Covid. JMO

I too am traveling next week to Sweden (for a 3 week vacation) - not sure if AirBaltic has a mask mandate - but I shall be wearing my mask everywhere I go.
Many years before Covid, on the advice of my allergy/asthma specialist, I wore a mask when flying. I admit that I felt a little conspicuous but didn't really care what other people thought. I did what was best for my health and well-being.

Have a lovely trip!

Not too many people here wear masks indoors - but I do - I might get stared at - but do not care - I do NOT want to get sick! So wear my mask everywhere!

And thank you - will definitely be a memorable one - going to the country I was born in 75 years ago to celebrate! :D

My third infection wasn’t as severe as the first two and I just received my first booster when I got sick. Thankfully, I didn’t have any of the breathing symptoms I had in previous infections. I did have fever, cough, and sore throat though.

I guess it just depends on the person’s immune system and/or what strain of the virus they got that will determine severity of illness.

I'm not trying to be rude, just curious. How did you catch it 3 times? Do you know?

The CDC sure has dropped the ball: their guidelines should be called "do you own thing'- what happened to them, I don't know: the CDC was once upon a time a highly respected organization: we looked to them for proper guidance - now, not so much.

“Do your own things” indeed. I can’t resist posting the brilliant WaPo satirist Alexandra Petri’s column in response to the CDC guidelines. It’s funny but it’s hard to laugh.

Well, we can all get back to life as usual — unless you are not confident in your ability to outrun the zombies. If you are not, though, it’s still exciting news: You now get to be responsible for your own zombie safety! This is good because it is freedom.

That's a great response to the new guidelines!

First time I’m not 100% sure but I think I got it at a bar/restaurant. It was in the very early days of the pandemic when there were no public health measures in place and people were mixing and mingling still-despite being told to tone it down due to the virus.

Second time is unknown. Possibly at work since I work at a grocery store and am around different people a lot.

Third time was on New Years Day this year. We went to my aunt’s house for a visit and someone there was obviously asymptomatic or had symptoms but figured it was a cold. There were also a bunch of kids running around and they are usually asymptomatic carriers. I was sick shortly after that visit.

It also doesn’t help that my immune system isn’t as strong as it used to be, making me susceptible to COVID.
