OK OK - Stephen “Steve” Lee Murphy, last seen in Claremore sometime in 1976, not reported missing until July 2022

The Regional Program Specialist contact for this case is Michael Nance

Tulsa Police Department

(918) 596-9143

Agency Case Number 2022035405

Personally, I would contact Michael Nance first; he's always been helpful and considerate when I've dealt with him. And he might have the name of a specific person to contact at Tulsa PD.
I sent an email to Mr. Nance. Waiting for a response.

Have you tried posting in any of the Lost & Missing Facebook pages? I don't know much about that, maybe others will chime in. We have posters from the Missing in Michigan group, vibrant & effective bunch.

Have you posted to veteran's sites? Someone who knew Mr. Murphy in the Marines may be able to fill in at least a little. Looks like some missing vets are included here:

You've covered so much, a thorough search. I'll keep thinking....

That's a great offer on the cousin-sorting!

I will look into this site. Ill try to get his picture and NAMUS number into it as well. I havent been able to find any veteran sites. I did contact a gentleman that would have been in the military about the same time, but he didnt know him.

Anyone (whom you haven't identified) who shows up as being in the 1st-2nd cousin range? Some people in his birth year already have grandchildren and even great grandchildren. If you've got some unidentified matches with lower CMs that would fall into that range (like ~300-1000), those could be children/grandchildren of a half sibling.
Ive contacted some of my matches that I believe are on paternal side but since that side hasnt really tested they arent really any help.

@apearn, would any of the resources you found for Florida Paratrooper be useful for finding @Snoangel26's father? Marines 1976, probably on the west coast.

or point you in a useful direction.

These veterans can start with Mr. Murphy's expected enlistment date & location. is number would help -- but the VFW or American Legion may lead you to those numbers.

Please keep us posted!

I actually did search bureau of prisons, he wasn't in there. I really don't know if he had a passport or not. Is there a way to find out if he had a passport? I haven't check state prisons individually.

Okay, this could be a lengthy process. @carbuff asked if you've checked prisons. Each state has it's own system, too. Decades ago I worked for my state government in Child Support Enforcement -- if someone has been in prison, there are records.

I started with Texas, here: https://inmate.tdcj.texas.gov/InmateSearch/start

Oddly enough, there is no Steven Murphy, that's a fairly common name & the Texas Department of Justice is big. We'd often start there, just because there was a huge number of inmates.

Illinois offers a sort of one-stop-shopping:

Now Illinois has 2 inmates named Steven Murphy, both are African-American. Didn't check the other options.

California has no one listed: CDCR Public Inmate Locator Disclaimer

I searched for last name Murphy, first name just ste as there are at least 2 ways to spell Steven/Stephen.

Type (name of state) inmate search, generally will have a .gov address.

Just something to try, the AWOL story indicates Mr. Murphy may have had some legal trouble?

Did you find a divorce decree? Was that by publication? Those documents may have information new to you.

I got a copy of the divorce papers. It was published in Tulsa Oklahoma for four straight weeks, than my mother was granted the divorce. I didnt check each state. Just the bureau of prisons. The AWOL story i recieved from my Aunt, Im really not sure if she was telling me the truth or if she believed what her mother said. I did try to contact my grandmother over the years with no response from her.

I'll dig around and see what comes up.

MCRD San Diego does have recruit yearbooks for sale. It seems like his possible enlistment would be in 1976 if I'm reading this right.

Also - there are National Archives researchers that work for private citizens and they may be able to get her past the SS # issue. IDK if/how Covid has effected their access.

Deed records for the 7313 E Newton St address may have some more info.

According to the copy of my parents marriage certificate a certified copy was sent to the V.A. and they got married June 1975. I couldn't find anything online going back to 1975 on the address on E Newton St. Who would I ask about help from National Archive researchers? I requested military records multiple times with the same result as they can't help me or find anything with the little information I have. I will look about the year books for MCRD. Thank you so much.

I will go talk with my local representative at the VFW. Might be easier doing that in person. Thank you

I'd break it down like this:

Talk to the deeds office in the county that house is in and ask them if you can get a copy of the deed. Maybe he is on there and maybe not. Deeds can be rich in information and they are usually like $3 - $5

For MCRD San Diego - Get in touch with them and ask them if someone can check the books for you IF you think you know when he may have been there. They may have only been graduating one or two times a month so that's only 12 to 24 yearbooks a year. Since we know his name it's a fast thing to look up.

Go talk to his high school as well. Officially they probably can't tell you his SS# but if you ask nicely and show them he is officially missing I bet someone may unofficially give it to you.

National Archive Researchers are usually working for themselves so you'd need to Google that. It may be faster to talk to your Congressman's office to get his military records though.

I’m very intrigued by your story. When I was searching for information on a deceased family member, I found that if I was super polite and told my story most people were eager to help as much as they could without violating any privacy laws.i got a lot of information by visiting local offices as well as writing letters and making phone calls to out of area places. Privacy laws are more strict these days but it wouldn’t hurt to try.

Thank you. I have been talking to my congressman office. I will get in touch with the high school and see if they can give me anything. I appreciate all the help and suggestions

The US Army’s aviation school, where all helicopter pilots are trained is located at Ft Rucker, AL. They employ a lot of helicopter mechanics. Is it possible he could have ties to this area ? Possible locations most of the mechanics live could be Enterprise, Ozark, Daleville, Level Plains.

Since he was only 19 when he lived there, it was probably a rental.
