There are lots of things I don’t do alone, because it isn’t safe-I won’t hike in the woods alone, I no longer kayak alone, and won’t even ride my bike on the bike path alone. It’s so sad, because I would like to do all of these things, but know it might not be safe. And you only have to have a bad outcome one time.
Agreed.
I stopped hiking alone a few years ago.
I only bike on very busy paths and never ones that aren't busy.
As soon as I get in my car I look the door no matter where I am.

Lastly, I never get in an elevator if I am stepping in with only men and I am the only woman.

Eliza Fletcher's murder is an unfortunate reminder to take extra precautions. And because of the press it's getting it's reminding women everywhere. So that's one positive thing from all this.

It really upsets me that women in particular (but all people, really) have to seriously consider whether or not they will be accosted, molested, or murdered when we want to commit to an activity that isn’t bothering anyone else, so that we can do so without an escort or dog.

I was thinking about this today as I walked alone, but with my 70 lb lab mix dog. I walk 2-4 miles per day in my neighborhood, and I’ve always felt safe because he’s with me. Is that false security? If Eliza had a dog running with her, would he have passed her by without stopping and waiting on her? Of course, we can never know, but it makes me reevaluate. The crime seems so impulsive and brazen that I don’t know if anything would have been seen as a deterrent to him.
This is not any different than Naomi Irion case in Nevada. IMO

Only she was sitting in her car alone in the early hours of the AM when she was ambushed.

Eliza was ambushed every early in morning with little people awake.

While I believe this was implusive insomuchas he saw an opportunity in the moment, I do believe he he knew he would get what he wanted.

He had all the advantage.

As we saw in the killing of Bowie and Katie Janness murder in Atlanta, GA, having a dog with you is not a guarantee of safety. If someone will attack a person with a pit bull, a Labrador Retriever isn't going to make much difference, or any dog for that matter.

Sadly a dog is not always going to be a deterrent. I can't remember the young girl's name who was walking with her dog and a predator grabbed her and took her into the woods just off the side of the walking path in broad daylight and killed her. There were people nearby when it happened. One thing that helped them catch the guy was he put her cell phone in his backpack and drove home with it. An exercise app tracked the entire route.

On Tuesday night, the Alpharetta chapter of Black Girls Run Atlanta (BGR) paired off into a group of walkers and runners before entering the tree-filled greenway at Preston Ridge Park in Atlanta.

Tammye Hughes leads the Alpharetta group that meets twice a week and says their motto is “no woman left behind.”

”We make sure that everyone who came returns before we depart the location,” Hughes said.

“You get up. You’re so used to placing your shoes on and putting your running attire on. You’re not expecting to be kidnapped,” Hughes said.

“We shouldn’t have to be shunned to running on a treadmill or have to run with a man.”

As of Wednesday, a Facebook group for the event had 985 people marked as going and 1,500 interested.
Below are the guidelines:
Wear Bright Colors and a bright light if you have it
Do not come alone
Repect the neighborhoods we run through as people will be sleeping
No Strollers
No Dogs
No Bikes
Walkers are welcome but must finish your distance by 7am
While media may be present, we kindly request that participants do not speak to the media out of respect for the family.
A few shuttles will be available to bus you back to UofM if you prefer to start there and run 4 miles to the finish

CA was seen on surveillance camera arriving at the location he dumped her at 5:50 am or so and then at his brothers apartment at 7:am so I’m wondering what was he doing between 550 and 750 with her? I pray to God she was not still alive and he was at that disgusting house assaulting her but what else would be happening during those 2 hours ? I had hoped she had already passed but if she was why would he stay there for 2 hours? This whole situation just has me shook, especially since it’s my hometown. It’s literally the stuff of nightmares.
Me too. I have her family in my thoughts today. Just awful.

I hope that I am still alive when one day our society realizes that every citizen has the right to expect some degree of personal safety on our streets. Regardless of the time of day. Regardless of gender, attire, size, age, RBF. How many times are we going to look the other way and pretend that this “collateral damage” to modern life is acceptable.
And what is our response to the latest horror? Balloons and stuffed animals at the dumping site. Joggers finishing Eliza’s run this Fri as a symbolic gesture. Discussions on the latest way to arm ourselves.
But why aren’t we using this opportunity to PROTEST across the U.S. about allowing predators to prey upon the very people our society should be protecting? Why is this ok? What is the tipping point for real action?
If we have changed our attitudes about having Amber Alerts and reporting missing persons in under 24 hrs, why aren’t we DEMANDING that our streets be safe? We should be organizing demonstrations across our country all day this Fri to demand change. That this is unacceptable. That we will never allow what happened to this young and loving woman to ever happen again. That it is not ok for her to die because we failed her. And her family. And her students.
She could have been my daughter, my sister, my friend. She still had so much light to share.
How many lights must be extinguished before we deny the victory of darkness?
Let Eliza be the last one.

Please keep the conversation about THIS CASE.

Generalized opinions about womens’ safety issues as a whole may be therapeutic, but they veer the discussion AWAY from Eliza, and make it more about your experiences, stories and perspectives. If your post does not even mention this horrible crime or Eliza, then you are probably off topic.
Those posts, while helpful to some, are not focusing on this specific case. We cannot right all the wrongs of our society on this forum, and so we ask that you put the attention on Eliza, and bringing justice in her name. Going forward, posts that are generalized statements of the state of women’s safety and personal stories, may be removed. Although sometimes valuable, it starts a long line of replies so that at some point members and the visitors who come here may be confused about who the thread is actually about. You CAN have those chats in PMs, and as many as 20 members may participate in a PM. PMs are unmoderated and Private. Only those on the PM will see the messages.

THANK YOU for helping us keep this thread about Eliza.

Reality setting in?
I think given his crimes, something has to be wrong with him. Not excusing any of his actions and I am not saying it's insanity or that he has any type of insanity defense, but what he did is really the most horrific of crimes. Something really might be going on with him that needs addressed for his own safety and for those in the jail dealing with him.

I wonder if that was while he was in juvie with no females to assault? Rape is common in male correctional facilities when there are no women around to act out on. They just pick on the weaker males. jmo
Where is this report of his first rape. It is not the attorney that he kidnapped. That attorney made an impact statement at the sentencing about Abston's lengthy juvenile record with unknow convictions and an alleged rape, but I have not located any other information on these rumored offences. Believe me I'm sure there are some but Im looking for documented evidence of such.

It’s in The Daily Mail article posted upthread. 1 or 2 pages back.
