It's very very interesting, and it's one of the foundational principles of forensics. It's also why so much of forensics is about what we can't see. So much technology and technique has been developed because they KNOW these things are there and being transferred between victim and killer, between driver and vehicle, between people and objects and the environment they're in, but they had to develop the science to PROVE it. So, we have DNA testing now that can be performed fast, on tiny samples, on degraded samples, on contaminated samples. We have GCMassSpec that can break down exactly what a substance is. We have luminol and Bluestar and Amido black that can show us the invisible traces of blood and other proteins. We have fingerprint powder and cyanoacrylate fuming with gold and ninhydrin that can make invisible fingerprints visible.

Locard may have been dead for over fifty years, but his principle shaped the whole development of investigation, forensics, and criminal investigation. And crime itself has evolved based on the science developed to combat it. The world would be very different without him.

Nancy Grace visited (for better or worse) one of the neighbors with cameras pointed towards the house. Their camera was sound activated.

Reportedly (I remember reading) a Ring Doorbell ring cam was luckily (or unlucky for BK) triggered by a cat jumping past it and captured the car.
Yeah for the CAT!

I don't know, I am not an academic, the websites for articles are not ones I'm familiar with. This may be relevant? My understanding is that they identified a victim had been injured with two different edged weapons using the metallic traces? Please correct me if I am wrong, this is outside my area.

I didn't assert the knife was broken in this specific case, I simply raised it in the course of discussing blade damage and evidence that can be left behind in general in a stabbing from a knife.

This is a most awesome post @isabella88

Regarding the Meta docs or more specifically the Instagrams ones, I don't see one for BK. Maybe that will come later? Yet we see his YikYak inquiry. I'm curious as to how someone was able to tell he slid into their DMs if they don't have his account info. Just wondering.

I am not seeing this in the link, could you point it out?

A knife will leave on or in a stabbing or cutting victim - minute particles of metal or ceramic (from the blade)

I can't find any good sources so far that verify that a steel blade can leave steel particles in a wound. I am looking for proof, I have never heard of this, steel in perfect condition shouldn't leave behind any particles.

Two different sharp-edged weapons discovered in a stabbing murder via this type of analysis:

Particles from scalpel blades have been found with these new methods.

Knife and crow bar particles retrieved:

Now I will say that it helps if the knife strikes bone, for these particles to be left. My point is that if the wounds on KG were as deep as her father says, it's likely the knife at least nicked a bone. Every single object on earth is decaying at some rate - very slowly, for most, but detectable. Tiny particles of a crowbar or a knife can lead to identification with a match with the weapon used.

Knife residue found here:

Turns out that most knives have a thin outer layer/coating (often identifiable and can be specific to a certain type of knife).

And the following articles shows that one does not even have to retrieve the particles - they can be analyzed by radiological techniques:

I have way more, some of those are behind paywalls, of course.

I read this when the subject came up. My own question is how often is this technique used and is it admissible?

JMO

It looks like SEM/EDS has been used in identification of murder weapons. This article from 2015 speaks of it (I haven't read the whole study as it requires special logins).

Two references in the article about metal residues on bone (ref 5 & 6) are from 2012.

Judging by the dates of all the references, it seems to have been used for identifying a range of different weapons for many years.

Idk; perhaps it is because of the randomness of it? The promise of these young adults? No justifiable reason why. Maybe we’re trying to make sense of something that is inherently senseless…possibly because of the numerous photos, videos, etc showing them so full of life. Maybe it’s not knowing the “why.” Frustration that so many senseless deaths keep happening and we don’t seem to be able to predict or stop them. Shared grief at such promise just ended in 15 minutes. JMO
Great answer! Really sums it all up. In Idaho, we are faced with 3 (including Kohberger) trials with the death penalty at stake. We're reminded almost every day via local news, local newspapers, etc. I'm just surprised that the traffic on this site didn't fade away months ago. It's heartwarming to know that people across the Country still care.

Perhaps he does not have an Instagram account. What little (verifiable information) I've read about BK, I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't have an account.

I posted this quite some time ago:

Spokane County Unveils New State-of-the-Art ME Building

“The building also has a Lodox machine, which can rapidly do full-body X-ray scans. Aiken said she plans to scan every body, which could help identify human remains.”

There is a new ME, but I suspect she continued the practice of scanning all bodies. IMO

That's incredible - and I had read that their facility in Spokane (less than 2 years old) was equipped with absolutely state of the art equipment.

That particular scanner can actually give a profile of the composition of the particles. Even if the knife is not a proprietary formula, I can post a lot of forensic anthropology about how we find the source of metals in found objects. Each element used in making knives has various isotopes and profiles. The below article is behind a pay wall but at the beginning lists how we know where iron or copper or other metals were originally mined.

Thank you, this is awesome.

I'd found the one about the two different weapons myself, but I could only see the blurb without a subscription, and to be frank - I had a breakdown in my last year of high school (lots of reasons, but a handful of undiagnosed learning disabilities didn't help), so I don't even have my high school diploma (HSC), let alone a university degree, so the language is very difficult for me to wade through without a lot of time and googling. I wasn't 100% sure it was relevant to what I was searching for.

Also, Ka-bar knives are made from 1095 Chrome/Vanadium plain tool steel with a Rockwell Hardness of 56-58 HRC. Apparently the tip is prone to breaking off and it has that black epoxy powder-coating which can wear off.

As a basis of comparison, Buck knives are made from 420HC stainless steel which also has a Rockwell Hardness of 56-58 HRC.

Is the UPS video them delivering the murder weapon to BK's apt?
that would have been too good to be true- I did read the warrant above as some one later noted and it is for:

" Any and all video that is recorded and stored on any delivery trucks that were in
Moscow Idaho between the dates ofNovember 6'h 2022 through November 14th 2022"

so, yeah, just possibly video of BK or his car, not a knife delivery... Wonder if he purchased it for cash some where or had some one buy it for him as a gift..

His knife, if he kept it, would have been washed. What screws these morons over is that the blood tends to get inside the openings in the sides. If you stuck in a bowl of oxyclean you’d be good, regardless, whatever his car shows will nail him. He cleaned it for a reason, and that reason is going to be blood from the victims.

Not just across the U.S., either :)
There are sleuths on this thread from all over the world. I'm in Canada, which is obviously still North America, but there are sleuths from the U.K., other areas of Europe and Australia that I know of, and probably other places too.
Empathy is global and one of the few things that all cultures share :)

You’re not the only one who thinks there is more to it. I’m on the fence but I see others commenting. Perhaps LE is identifying other possible motives so they can discount them? Idk. June can’t come fast enough, but I’m guessing he’ll plead not guilty and ask for a continuance to prepare for the defense. JMO. INAL so may be way off base.

The Door Dash was also for a time period, not a single delivery:

all information in your possession or control related to sales, deliveries, purchases, and/or transactions made to 1122 King Road, Moscow, Idaho 83 843 for time period ofJanuary 1, 2022 to present, to include:

date and time of sales; date and time of deliveries; purchases and/or transactions; name and identification of the driver; full description ofthe vehicles used; any and all communications between drivers and the purchasers

I also notice that some for ATT include that confidential source statement?

Okay. Who's keeping up with oddities in the warrants? The defendant did not even reside in Pullman until July 2022. Why would the warrant request records for the entire year from DD to the 1122 House? Xana's DD delivery may not have been as innocuous as it seemed even thought the timing was ironic. How as BK able to toggle between Xana getting her DD and BK killing upstairs?

JMO and speculation.
I can think of three alternative explanations off the top of my head.
1) DD driver was a POI at some point in the investigation and/or;
2) DD driver knows BK and/or;
3) DD driver knows a lot more than what we actually know.

Kohlberger's Elantra was called in on 11/29.
The DoorDash warrant was served on 12/6.

Those things don't necessarily have to have any relation. It's likely LE was still pursuing any and all leads at that time. Including double and triple checking DoorDash guys' story and to check if any other DoorDash drivers were of interest.
