George Stanley Burdynski Jr.
Missing since May 24, 1993 from Brentwood, Prince George's County, Maryland.
Classification: Nonfamily Abduction
Vital Statistics
Date Of Birth: July 29, 1982
Age at Time of Disappearance: 10 years old
Height and Weight at Time of Disappearance: 4'0; 60 lbs
Distinguishing Characteristics: White male. Blondish-brown hair; brown eyes.
Marks, Scars: He has a scar on the right side of his face above his mouth.
Clothing: A blue shirt and green shorts.

Circumstances of Disappearance

Burdynski's mother told authorities that he left the family's residence in the 4300 block of 40th Place in Brentwood, Maryland at approximately 3:30 PM on May 24, 1993. He was riding his red and white 1950 series Schwinn bicycle at the time. Burdynski was planning to bike to meet an adult friend.

The friend stated that Burdynski never arrived by 4:00 PM, but witnesses said that they saw the child in front of his mother's residence around that time. Burdynski was last seen biking around the neighborhood at approximately 8:30 PM that evening. He has never been heard from again.

Burdynski's bicycle was missing its rear fender and had a spare rim tied around the handlebars at the time of his disappearance. His father and the friend searched for Burdynski the following morning and discovered the rim three blocks from the family's residence. The rim was located near a local tennis court. There was no sign of Burdynski at the scene and his bicycle has never been recovered.

One lead in Burdynski's case involved two suspects who were connected to a child exploitation ring in the mid-Atlantic United States. Maryland law enforcement and the Federal Bureau Of Investigation (FBI) discovered that the suspects utilized the Internet to further their child *advertiser censored* ventures. The individuals were never charged in connection with Burdynski's disappearance, but the FBI did begin an investigation focused on Internet child exploitation as a result of the failed lead.

"Innocent Images" debuted in 1994 and worked to prosecute suspected child pornographers on the Web. Burdynski's mother testified at one suspect's trial, saying that her son visited his home in the 3200 block of Varnum Street with his friends in 1993. Authorities believe that the suspects sexually abused two of Burdynski's friends the weekend prior to his disappearance. The three men were eventually convicted of child abuse unrelated to Burdynski's case.

Investigators announced in March 2002 that they were focusing on another individual whom they believe may have murdered Burdynski in 1993. Authorities have not publicly named the suspect, as the case is still under investigation. The information received by investigators reportedly does not involve any of the convicted child molesters.

It has been thirteen years since Junior Burdynski disappeared and six months since I first posted his story here. Has anyone heard anything? I recall some years ago someone claiming that he was still alive, but I think that was either a hoax or a case of mistaken identity.

I have never even heard of this poor child, I would like to know what happened and if there is an update.

Details of Disappearance

Burdynski's mother told authorities that he left the family's residence in the 4300 block of 40th Place in Brentwood, Maryland at approximately 3:30 p.m. on May 24, 1993. He was riding his red and white 1950 series Schwinn bicycle at the time.

Burdynski was planning to bike to meet an adult friend, Robert Violet. Violet stated that Burdynski never arrived by 4:00 p.m. but witnesses said that they saw the child in front of Violet's mother's residence around that time.

Burdynski was last seen biking around the neighborhood at approximately 8:30
p.m. that evening. He has never been heard from again. Burdynski's bicycle was missing its rear fender and had a spare rim tied around the handlebars at the time of his disappearance.

His father and Violet searched for Burdynski the following morning and discovered the rim three blocks from the family's residence.

The individuals, Steven Leak (occasionally referred to as "Bruce Leak"), James A. Kowalski Jr. and Joseph Lynch were never charged in connection with Burdynski's disappearance, but the FBI did begin an investigation focused on Internet child exploitation as a result of the failed lead.

Innocent Images debuted in 1994 and works to prosecute suspected child
pornographers on the Web. Burdynski's mother testified at Lynch's trial, saying that her son visited Lynch's home in the 3200 block of Varnum Street with his friends in 1993.

Authorities believe that Kowalski, Leak and Lynch sexually abused two of
Burdynski's friends the weekend prior to his disappearance. Kowalski stated that he was not aware Burdynski was missing, but investigators discovered he videotaped news footage of the boy's case at his home. The three men were eventually convicted of child abuse unrelated to Burdynski's case.

Investigators announced in March 2002 that they were focusing on another
individual whom they believe may have murdered Burdynski in 1993. Authorities have not publicly named the suspect, as the case is still under investigation.

The information received by investigators reportedly does not involve any of the convicted child molesters.

In 2004, there were reported sightings of Burdynski in Boston and Northborough, Massachusetts. Witnesses recognized him by the scar on his face and said he appeared to be homeless. He may have been with a group of people selling magazines or coupon books door to door.

Two detectives from Brentwood traveled to Massachusetts to investigate the
sightings, but they were unable to locate the individual or determine whether or not he was actually Burdynski. He has never been identified.

Burdynski's case remains unsolved.

Next month will mark the 14th anniversary of Junior Burdynski's disappearance. Bumping case up with hope that someone will give it some publicity. Someone knows something.

I wonder who the witnesses were who spotted him in 2004. I mean would they have been sure that it was him.

I do not know who the witnesses were, but I do recall the alleged sighting when it was reported in the news. The sighting was not made by people who actually knew Junior, but by persons who had seen one of those "age enhanced" artist's concepts of how Junior would look now. The updated sketch was widely circulated and published and someone was seen who resembled the drawing.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children continues to search for George Burdynski Jr., of Brentwood, 15 years after his disappearance.

Burdynski was last seen by his mother at about 3:30 p.m. on May 24, 1993. The 10-year-old left their home in the 4300 block of 40th Place wearing a blue shirt and green shorts and riding a small, red Schwinn bicycle. He said he planned to meet an adult friend, Robert Violet. Violet said Burdynski never arrived. Witnesses said they saw Burdynski in front of Violet's mother's home at about 4 p.m. Others said they saw Burdynski riding in the neighborhood at about 8:30 p.m.

I was living in the Washington DC area at the time of this kidnapping (as well as Melissa Brannen's, the 3 girls in Spotsylvania County, and Michelle Dorr) and remember it well. As I watched the news reports back then, I remember thinking this was probably a child who was allowed quite a bit of freedom for his age. My son is the exact same age as Junior and I did not allow him the same degree of freedom to roam the neighborhood and to hang out with people I did not know. I can recall being afraid to even let my children play outside unattended at all. It was the times and the area we lived in...pretty much most of the parents I knew were the same way. I had forgotten about Junior Burdynski's case and was saddened that it has not been resolved. Robert Violet and or the other men who molested children in the area must be involved...proving it another matter.

Did they ever determine if Robert Violet was a child molester? Reading through what has been provided in the postings, I do not see that they included Violet in those who were involved in child *advertiser censored* and the molestations that occurred. Or did I miss that?
I would question those who reportedly saw Jr. on the evening of the 24th. Was it mistaken identity? If Violet was involved in Jr.'s disappearance, I would suspect that whatever happened to Jr would have happen closer to 4 p.m.

I don't think that Robert Violet was ever implicated in any wrongdoing. Supposedly the child was seen by eyewitnesses outside of Violet's mother's home, but possibly they were mistaken. He had a spare tire rim tied to his handlebars, which was found by a tennis court only 3 blocks from his home. I suspect that he was grabbed off of the street, and the rim came loose while that happened.

bumping for Jr. I was reading about him recently. His disappearence is pretty reminiscent of Johnny Gosch's.

Richard,

First of all I want to tell you that I have always enjoyed reading your posts. I would love to discuss the Lyon case with you sometime. I have some quentions about Junior.
1. The people that saw him outside of Violet's house, they didn't actually know him?

2. Did the person/people that saw him at 8:30 that evening know him? Were they certain that it was him?

3. I read about James A. Kowalski Jr on the Lyon thread and wonder what your thoughts are about him? I'm not sure I understand why he was ruled out. This seems like something that he would do.

Thanks........

I cannot say for certain whether the witnesses actually knew Junior or if they were replying to police investigators as to whether or not they had seen him (perhaps after being shown a photo or poster). I do know that Junior and the suspects lived in the same neighborhood.

In regard to Mr. Kowalski being considered a possible suspect in the Lyon case - that is certainly a possibility which should be checked out thoroughly. It should be noted, however, that a period of 18 years separates the disappearance of the Lyon Sisters and the disappearance of Junior Burdynski. I would wonder what Mr. Kowalski was doing in that span of years.

I'm sorry, I wasn't very clear with my 3rd question as I had mentioned reading about Kowalski on the Lyon thread. What I meant to ask was,why was Mr.Kowalski cleared in Junior's case? He seemed to be involved with Junior's friends.:waitasec:

I do not know if Kowalski was ever "cleared" in regard to the Burdynski disappearance, or if police simply lacked the necessary evidence to charge him with a crime.
