Elderly woman kidnapped in Hampton County home invasion

The Hampton County Sheriff’s Office said Monday that a 78-year-old woman was kidnapped in a home invasion.

The Sheriff’s Office said it happened around 1:30 am.

They issued a “Be On The Lookout” for Margaret S. Gooding, 78, of 21484 Old Salkehatchie Highway.

The suspect and victim were possibly in a white 1998 Buick Lesabre, with license number: ASH693. T

The Sheriff’s Office said the suspect may be armed and dangerous.

Prayers that Margaret comes home safe. How scary! I hate how common home invasions are becoming now days..

I live about 60 miles from where this happened. I'll definitely be on the lookout for the car and Margaret.

There is not a lot of information yet.
Why would they take a 78 yr old woman?
If it is a home invasion, why not
just take her money or valuables
and leave her alone?

It's horrible - kidnapping an elderly person, and crimes against the elderly in general. Poor woman must have been so frightened. I'm so glad this had a happy ending.

UPDATE: 6:45 P.M. Monday:
More information has been released by Hampton County Sheriff T.C. Smalls concerning the reported home invasion and kidnapping of a Miley woman early Monday morning.

Smalls said late Monday evening Margaret Gooding was found in the trunk of her car and suffered possibly one to two gunshot wounds to her abdomen. She was flown to the Medical University of South Carolina and is in stable condition. Currently the sheriff’s office has persons of interest who they are looking at at this time. Further details concerning the incident will be released tomorrow as the investigation continues.

Family members of 78-year-old Margaret Gooding say she was found in the trunk of a car about 30 miles away in a Walterboro parking lot.

"The neighbor called and said he had heard a gunshot, and so my wife checked and couldn't get her, so she called 911," said her brother-in-law, Oddis Gooding.

"Officers responded to a call out here this morning about 1am, upon responding they saw some things that weren't quite in order, then their the investigation started," said Hampton County sheriff T.C. Smalls.

Investigators say Gooding was shot in the stomach but found alive and conscious in the trunk of a car around 4pm Monday.

Family members tell WTOC she was talking and was taken to MUSC in Charleston. She was last listed in stable condition.

"They have found her, she was located in Walterboro, I think she was in the mall, I'm not sure which mall, but she was alive in the trunk of the car," said Oddis Gooding. "

I do not know if this is related BUT there were several Hampton County Sheriff's cars at the High School this morning.
OTOH it could be for another reason ( ie, we have had several gang shootings recently)

I haven't found any updates on the search for the a-holes who did this to her...can you imagine lying in the hospital, so vulnerable recovering from GSWs -- wondering if the POIs will come back to finish ya off???

So far I have no info on the High School, BUT I have some firsthand info ..

I, again, am only speculating here..( I guess I should put my location to show that I am in Walterboro SC where she was found)
Where her car was found was a single block from one of the last shootings. Depressed area,in fact, in was within a few blocks of where the shootings started.

You have to realize, the "town" is 5 minutes (by car) wide. I live in a nice middle class neighborhood, but I am in walking distance of the "bad area". It is the largest county in SC, but this town is rather small. Everyone knows everyone.

Nope.It's not. I have been invited to a symposium on local crime. I will let you know how that goes. Without wanting to offend anyone here, I am an upper middle class white female. I have 3 kids and 2 grands. I was asked to speak at a recent meeting on gang violence. When I questioned why, I, of all was I asked, I was told that I was in the MINORITY in the county and they needed to hear from me.
Apparently they liked what I had to say, because this next meeting is with the Governor.
