High alert in U.S. after suspicious package found in UK

(CNN) -- Airports in some of the United States were on high alert Friday after investigators found a suspicious package on a plane in the United Kingdom the night before, a law enforcement source with detailed knowledge of the investigation said.

The suspicious package, which contained a "manipulated" toner cartridge, tested negative for explosive material, the source said, but it led to heightened inspection of arriving cargo flights in Newark, New Jersey and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and a UPS truck in New York.

Police also were investigating a suspicious package at the distribution center of an airport in East Midlands, in the United Kingdom, an airport spokesman said. Authorities said they could not immediately connect that investigation to the ones unfolding in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

Authorities seemed most focused on inspecting cargo planes.

Suspicious items investigated at Phila., NJ airports

PHILADELPHIA INT'L AIRPORT - October 29, 2010 (WPVI) -- A suspicious package in the United Kingdom has prompted searches of cargo planes and a truck in the U.S., including planes at Philadelphia International Airport.

.........................snip.............................

ABC News reports those devices were shipped from Yemen and then went through England.

No explosive devices have been found in the United States so far.

The investigation in Philadelphia involves two UPS planes. One of the planes is UPS #218 originating from Paris. The second plane is UPS #204 originating from Philadelphia. That plane had not yet taken off. There was no word on its destination.

The planes have been isolated and authorities are now investigating.

The Philadelphia Fire Department tells Action News that they dispatched two HAZMAT crews to the airport for a "possible radiological event" around 9:21 a.m.

The crews arrived on scene and conducted a scan of three individuals taken off the two UPS flights. All three tested negative during the field scan of radiological material.

This is pretty widwspread. If it turns out to be nothing, I'm guessing this is a dry run. I hatento say this, but having Janet Napolitano in charge of Homeland Security does not make me feel safe.

suspicious packages everywhere!!! Whats going on? How does one decide if a package is suspicious? I hate that we have to live in constant fear of this kind of crap!!!

Authorities are focusing on flights coming from Yemen into the United States, according to the source.

***Yemen huh??? Wonder who is behind this? :waitasec:

Another suspicious package, this time in Maine. Not sure if related. It says localized event.

Bomb Squad Checking Suspicious Package Outside Courthouse in Maine
PORTLAND, Maine -- Officials in Portland, Maine, say a suspicious item outside the federal courthouse is not related to investigations of susicious packages elsewhere.
The courthouse was evacuated Friday because of a backpack left outside the downtown building.
Law enforcement officials say the backpack was discovered in bushes near the courthouse entrance at 10 a.m. The bomb squad was on the scene, and began using a robot to probe the item at 12:39 p.m.
City spokeswoman Nicole Clegg describes the situation as a "localized event."
It coincided with a suspicious package being discovered in the United Kingdom that prompted searches of three UPS planes and a truck in the U.S. No explosives were reported to have been found.

See, this is what bothers me. First of all, about a month or two ago, there was this guy who began in the South, I believe, flew to an East Coast city and put his luggage on a plane destined for Yemen and he didn't take that flight but bought a ticket to somewhere else. There was then another guy who joined him and they flew to Holland (?) I think.

Anyway, the flight with the luggage was stopped and his luggage removed. It contained all of the MAKINGS OF A BOMB, ie the casings and such, but NOT actually explosives. The two men were stopped when they got off the plane and questioned. Then released as it was 'nothing.'

What? Obviously it was some sort of a plot in the works. Maybe seeing how much they can get through to their destination.

Then a few weeks later there was again a guy stopped in the same airport the last two had been stopped at and questioned and then released. Then we hear NOTHING ELSE about this.

It's my understanding today's packages were on UPS flights. Think about it, have you sent or received a UPS package, or even USPS lately? You can track them by their path from the point of origin to each stop and stop over.

What if they send a package from one location, have it go to another point, city, state, country, and have an operative waiting at the location and when the package could cause the most damage, the sender knows where it's at and signals the person at the target point to remotely set off the package.

I hadn't thought of this type of scenario until today's incident with the UPS cargo plane.

Very distrubing,
JMHO

PS...I heard on the news a while ago that the Prez was advised of this developing story from the UK last night. He then alerted our security. This must have been that 2 a.m. phone call Hillary was talking about during her campaign. :)

Well, don't say it out loud or you will be labled a racist!!!
The good news is,maybe the President will stay in Washington for a change!

At this point I believe this is part of some terrorist plot, but probably to chek on how our security works. Not sure anything is going to really ignite. I hope this isn't the beginning of things to come with the holiday season ahead.

A U.S. official said authorities are investigating whether a string of suspicious packages was a dry run for a plot to send bombs through the mail.

A suspicious package containing a toner cartridge with wires and powder was found during routine screening of cargo at an airport near London, prompting authorities to scour three planes and a truck in the United States on Friday.

Searches were conducted at Philadelphia and Newark international airports and in New York City, but no explosives were found. All the packages believed to be suspicious came from Yemen and were being sent via UPS.

I don't care .

And yes, maybe Obama will have to stay in Washington for a while. Not sure if that is great news or not.

holy crap...Passenger flight carrying package with explosive device on it!!! Reported by Associated Press!! Package from Yemen, flight from Emirates.

The plane being escorted in NY has landed.

Heard it on the radio.

I understand the prez is going to be making a comment soon. Just announced. Maybe at 1:00 pdt???

PS....this must be serious....:(

It's being called a "plane of interest" on CNN headline. What the heck does that mean?

I believe they're checking all cargo originating in Yemen. So perhaps they found something.............

A crew member aboard a UPS plane arriving to Philadelphia from Paris, France later notified authorities on approach about a suspicious package. The crew member described a possible radiological component to the package, the incident report said. The two occupants safely exited the aircraft after landing in a remote area of the airport.

That would make sense, put the fake bombs on the UPS planes and throw the real ones on passenger planes. I keep thinking why would they blow up cargo planes anyways?

Oh, I see, the US being involved originated with the first suspicious package in the UK. It was destined for the U.S. from Dubai.

major security alert is under way in the UK, US and Middle East tonight after "sinister" packages were discovered on board two cargo planes after they landed in the Midlands and Dubai.

The plane that landed in the UK had begun its journey in Dubai and was bound for the US.
