Jill has been found and returned to her family and a suspect has been arrested for her rape and murder.

Australia has rules about public discussion of the suspect and its impact on the judicial process. WS, while governed under the laws of the U.S., respects the laws of other countries, especially when it comes to ensuring a fair trial process.

RULES FOR THIS CASE DISCUSSION:

Any publication which prejudices the course of justice - A report of a court case which gives details of the defendant's previous criminal convictions, before the end of the trial, would be contempt. This is because it may prejudice the judge, magistrate or jury against the defendant, if there are many previous convictions. This would reduce the chances of a fair trial. Previous convictions (often called antecedents) may not be revealed until after the verdict has been reached. They are then considered by the court to help it to decide on an appropriate punishment.

http://www.thenewsmanual.net/Resources/medialaw_in_australia_03.html

Bottom line: NO DISCUSSION OF THE SUSPECT'S PAST CRIMINAL ACTIVITY, IF ANY.

NO PICTURES OF THE SUSPECT ARE TO BE POSTED. All pictures have been removed from MSM and the suspect's face has been blocked out. His facebook has been pulled and is no longer available. We will honor that here at WS.

NO DISCUSSION OF THE SUSPECT'S PAST LIFE, IN GENERAL. No discussion of where he previously lived, worked, or spent time. No discussion of his family or friends or other innocent people that have nothing to do with this case.

At this link: http://www.thenewsmanual.net/Resources/sub_judice_chart_01.html

There is a color coded chart that shows what can and cannot be discussed during this pretrial/trial period. The Mods will use it for reference when deciding what posts to leave/remove - however, the Mods will also use their own discretion and it will NOT BE UP FOR ARGUMENT, even if it is not on this chart.

If you have questions or concerns, please pm a mod or alert the post. Do not post it in the threads.

Don't tell me I'm the first - for once??? :rocker:

Not a lot happening now - we've done the "hunt the CCTV" thing, we've speculated on exactly where and how the offence occurred, we've mulled over how many cars may have actually been heard at the alleged offender's house at 2am, and if that was just him popping home to collect a shovel, and we've discussed how the judicial system may need to be dragged into the 21st century and learn how to live with social media since they're never going to stop it.

I suspect we won't have a lot more to discuss until more facts emerge in the court system, or unless MSM manages to drag up the occasional bit of information we can go on.

The same thing has happened on the Allison Baden-Clay page - all quiet.

I'm just keeping an eye on these two pages now from time to time - but will only chime in with a post if I have something to contribute that may be useful.

But I think this is the first time I've been first on the thread... woohoo :great:

At this point its really a matter now for waiting on the committal to see what comes out of it.
What we can do is start thinking of ways to create a safer world for women...reclaim the night is fine but only as part of the solution.
It is a fact that men possess a greater physical strength than women and as this is the case, men have an obligation and a duty of care to ensure that we intervene on behalf of any woman in trouble.
Just last Friday,my band was playing in a club in Sydney and I had to give a big boofhead his marching orders when he wouldnt take no for an answer while hassling two women that came to see me play.
Im not easily intimidated and although he was a big man,his pea sized heart let him down...its something we need to do regardless of the risk to ourselves...to do otherwise is cowardly

Young men only need look to Thomas Meagher to see how a real man behaves...I never thought I would see the kind of quiet strength and dignity that was displayed by gary Lynch in 1986...but Thomas is cut from the same cloth...what a beautiful man

In terms of evidence...I am thinking it was more to do with assistance from Vodafone in tracking the mobile combined with footage from the tollways rather than CCTV

Hi everyone. Long time reader, first time poster.
In the midst of jetlag this morning I had a thought...
The media is now alluding to Jill's death happening in the laneway off hope st, however once the suspect confessed and lead the police to the body that area as far as a I know was given no extra attention, or returned to.
The rural areas neat gisborne were apparently combed through for days following, searching for different things depending what you read, however as far as a I know the police or forensics didn't return to that laneway. Now, if they did know that crime had been committed there, wouldn't they have had to return? Wouldn't they have looked for evidence or of I guess potentially rape and or murder?

Can anyone shed any light on this? Is it possible the police want us to think this is where it happened when maybe it didn't?

I wouldnt think the police have either the time nor inclination to invent conspiracies...The laneway was looked at thoroughly for forensic evidence going by photos and the area was taped off for some time.
I think you can pretty much put your house on the Hope Street lane way as the crime scene

That just reads very sadly 'Hope st' not much hope for Jill was there? :(

The lane way was searched by Victoria Police: Jill was reported missing by her husband on Saturday. Jill's handbag was found at 6.30 am Monday. On the Monday at 8.50am –Homicide squad takes over the case. The lane way was taped off and searched. Then on Monday at 1.45pm – Forensic experts emerged from the lane way with two brown paper bags.

Yes it was, but like I said, not since they had a body, alleged perp or location of crime confirmed

Big article & photos of the alleged killer in this months (November) Women's Weekly. Too much detail in my opinion of his prior offences. What a nasty piece of work.

Wonder how the police and the judicial system will deal with that? If they thought social media was going to be a problem - they forgot the dreaded Women's Weekly...! :furious:

Does the Women's Weekly have different issues in different states? I saw an article about Jill in the November issue today in Melbourne. As far as I could see there was nothing about the alleged perpetrator not even his name, and certainly no history of him, only a blurred photo of him in the police car. To me we should be focused on celebrating the victim's life in these type of magazines (which I don't buy but sometimes scan in waiting rooms) rather than focussing on info on any alleged offender's life. All my humble opinion.

In Queensland the November issue (with Hugh Jackman on the cover) has the Facebook photo on the first page of the article. Another photo has him in the police car ducking for cover. No blurring. I was shocked to see it published. His name & former name is stated, how many victims & times he has raped. Talks about his first wife. And it goes into a bit of detail about what he did to his other victims. Poor taste for The Women's Weekly. A rep dropped it off yesterday for my waiting room.

Sorry...I wish I could supply a link...but I have never managed to as I am always on my iPhone or iPad. Too technical for me.
