I'm sure Dad knows his son better than we do. He probably remembers how he felt about HIS parents at 13! I would rather have been anywhere at 13 than be with my parents.

It is a difficult age.

I don't think they are assuming he ever went fishing.

Just jumping off your post...

In CA we have to have a fishing license/permit to go fishing... Even in streams in the Mammoth area...

Is this required in CO..

he reason I ask.. Is I don't imagine Dylan and dad would have had time Sunday night to even get a permit for night fishing/next day fishing?

Just some thoughts...

I'm catching up. Can someone tell me if MR has said the phone was dropped/broken? Where is this idea coming from? TIA

Also, has it been said that the father had WIFI or not? Even if the phone was off (which I do not know too many teens who would ever turn their phone off, even when charging), IF Dylan had an iPod touch, he could have used WIFI and a free texting app and would not need cellular service.

Sorry to quote myself.

Also, you can do Facetime/Skype/video chatting on WIFI, all without cellular service. So IF Dylan had an ipod touch or an iphone, it would not matter how sketchy the cell service was if there was WIFI available.

it seems possible to me that Dylan was too tired to wake up early, so MR had to leave to make his appointments on time. Dylan may have figured he missed his only ride into town, then just decided to hitch a ride with someone (a neighbor, a worker in the area, a hunter from out of town) and was abducted from there.

I know a lot of people don't think people hitchhike anymore, but around here, it is still very common. Also, being MR lived so far from Durango, Dylan probably would have realized his dad would not be going back to town that day.

Even if it were required, doesn't mean everybody would necessarily get permit for it.
Some people will probably do it without a permit?

No... MR never said that... speculation.
We don't know about dad's house with wifi or not.
Nothing... read that again NOTHING ... has said the phone was 'OFF'. Speculation, IMO (posted links above)
We don't know which iPod he had per MSM/per dad.

here is some more info about the area. What is called Bayfield consists of several communities, Gem Village, Vallecito and Bayfield proper. All given a mailing address of Bayfield because of the Post Office. If MR was to have taken Dylan to his friends on sunday nite he would have had to to drove quite a ways out of the way (assuming the friends lived in Bayfield proper. There are cut throughs on various dirt roads in that area to quickly get you to Bayfield. Especially if his intent was drop him off and then to go to Walmart. I personally have driven back to the Ute Casino to go up to bayfield to head east.
So if MR knew he was going back into Durango in the AM, why would he not dropped dylan off sunday eve at the friends (to make Dylan Happy) and done the Turkey day shopping on Monday while he is in town? Maybe 25 miles from Airport to Walmart maybe another 25+ miles back to home. As opposed to at the most 25 miles from Airport to home. I hope this makes sense.

As soon as Dylan showed up at his father's, he wanted go visit friends. Father had to tell him it was too late, so he then made plans to go visit friends first thing in the morning.

Dylan was going to be with dad for a week. There was plenty of time for the two to be together.

Just speculation based on the fact that Dylan had not used his phone since 8pm Sunday night Nov18. Trying to make sense of it is all.

I really don't think it's selfishness so much as just self-centeredness (is that a word?). When my boys were that age they would mope around if forced to go someplace they didn't want to go, or being told they couldn't go someplace that they wanted to go. On the other hand, if I explained to them why it was important to someone else that they go, or why it wasn't possible to go somewhere, they were understanding - most of the time.

I think the problem with 13 year olds is that they're on the verge of becoming adults. They want to test their wings, and their decision-making skills. They want to prove they're independent enough to deserve some freedom, but still want to know someone will be there to back them up if they find they aren't. I believe Dylan may have wanted to go to MR's house so he could see his friends. I'm sure he tried talking him into taking him Sunday night because they were all anxious to see each other, but may have been slightly relieved that MR insisted on him getting some sleep first. I can't say much about cell phone usage at that age, my boys didn't have them at that age, and neither do most of the 13 year olds I know now. MOO

Very true. Most kids in a situation like Dylan's would be focused on seeing his local friends and it's not necessarily because they dislike the parent...it just they prefer to be with their friends. Generation gap, per se.

I haven't followed along in Dylan's case on a daily basis, but I find a few things strange. While I'm sure he wanted to see his friends right away, to want to go see them as soon as he touched down at that time of the evening is surprising, imo. Sorta tells me he really didn't want to tolerate Dad at all. The second thing...if he fell asleep at around 8 or 9PM with the expectation of seeing his friends early the next day.....Dylan would have been up at the crack of dawn rearing to go. There is something not right with the story regarding that. If this was Dylan's expectation, and for some reason it didn't come to be, then that was a huge disappointment. For a 13 yr old to be told to wait ...again for 4 hours or until later in the day under the circumstances would be unimaginable....and I could see him taking off on his own. But why didn't he atleast ride his bike?

While I don't want to believe his father had anything directly to do with his demise there are certainly some things that don't make sense at all.
There was misunderstanding or just plain discourse either the night before or that early morning about each other's expectations, imo. Maybe the father is a bit selfish, controlling and demanding as well...and even tho he tries to paint a picture of what he and Dylan discussed of the activities ahead for the week, I don't think he and Dylan are close. Just the opposite, I think they were very much "estranged".

One thing is for sure, I don't believe Dylan is out there alone by his own choice at this point....and I don't believe the father's story is exactly what took place. I don't believe LE believes it either. While I want to think and hopefully believe LE is proactive in just covering all the angles with the SW for the properties of the father's, I tend to believe it's purposeful for some other reason that LE has knowledge of. IMO, JMO, etc.

Just speculation based on the fact that Dylan had not used his phone since 8pm Sunday night Nov18. Trying to make sense of it is all.

MR says he tried to text Dylan after he came home and Dylan wasn't there. So that indicates MR was not aware of any problems with the phone. And if there were any problems with the phone on Sunday evening, one would think MR should have heard about it.

If we go by dad's statement as being true then here's a possibility...

Maybe Dylan's phone did get dropped around 8pm therefore not able to use it.
Wakes up dad's gone, can't use phone as it is broken. Doesn't have friends number's memorized so can't use land line and does try to hitch-hike as he doesn't want to wait around for dad. He grabs his backpack so he can stay over at friends as dad said he would want to stay at friends for Mon and Tues.(per interview with dad on KOAT.com)He even grabs fishing pole and leaves down CR500 heading south toward friends direction.

Here's the thing, the nearest RSO is only 0.5mi or 2mins down that street from dad's house! This RSO was busted by ICE for child *advertiser censored*. Dylan is alone and walking and passes this area fairly quickly and well...? IDK but I hope they are double, triple and quadruple checking that guy!

Also of note, there is a place called Chain Lakes right off that street as well only 1.7mi or 4mins from dad's house past the RSO. (Possible fishing spot?)

So maybe...

Thanks OtherEyes - Great Sleuthing! Can we get a link for this RSO? Do you still have it handy?

Thanks!

Salem

Fishing licenses for 16 and older in Colorado. Under 16 you don't need one, if I remember correctly.

So MR would have planned to do errands. Dylan sleeping in was not planned MR stayed on his schedule. All my opinion .

:pillowfight2: :bedtime: :eek:fftobed:

Nite all

yes, dad kept his appointments (I think one was with his divorce attorney - not sure if a scheduled appt or drop in). I think a couple errands were confirmed by LE but I am too lazy to go find links because I am also going to bed...:floorlaugh:

Dylan, if you can, please come home. Hoping tomorrow brings good news. Gosh, it's been 2 weeks...:please::please:

I think I understand what you're saying and I agree that it would have been entirely possible. It may just have been a matter of Dad thinking Dylan should spend his first night in town at his house. Or perhaps Dad felt it was getting late and wasn't sure if it was appropriate/if Dylan's friend's parents were okay with Dylan coming over to spend the night so late on a night before a work day.

To me, common sense just says what are the odds dad left him breathing and when dad came home he wasn't there? No signs of a runaway, no signs of wandering off in the woods?either he never made it to dads house or someone he trusted lured him out of there!
There are no signs of a struggle, right?

i do not think hitching a ride is considered running away. especially around here.

I have still been curious about this posting from Thread 1. If it wasn't Dylan running from them, could it have been his abductor?

"A postal worker possibly saw the boy Monday on County Road 501, near Vallecito, and two rescue workers may have seen the boy Tuesday afternoon, said Dan Bender, spokesman with the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office.

Both sightings are unconfirmed, and, in both cases, the boy ran from rescue workers up a hill in the Vallecito area, Bender said.

“We’re assuming at this point – it may be Dylan – eluded searchers,” he said. “We’re leaning toward his being a runaway.”"

Well if I had battled over custody issues to see my child, I would be pretty darn hurt and ticked off if they landed and wanted to head off to friends on the first evening they arrived. I have had an awful feeling that there may have been a fight over this ... Possibly the phone was confiscated in an attempt to stop arrangements being made? I'm not implying this led to anything horrible happening, but maybe dad wouldn't want to admit they argued that night?
