NEW YORK (Reuters) - Hikers were being urged to steer clear of a popular New York state park for the weekend while police search for a man suspected of shooting his daughter-in-law and believed to be armed and hiding in the thickly wooded area.

Police have been searching for Eugene Palmer, 73, since Monday in connection with the killing of Tammy Palmer, his son's 39-year-old wife. They believe he is probably roaming the woods of Harriman State Park, some 30 miles north of Manhattan, after finding his deserted pickup truck near a park entrance.

Police Comb a Dense Forest for a Suspect in a Killing

Eugene Palmer was always a loner, his neighbors in the Rockland County town of Haverstraw said. Armed with a shotgun, they said, Mr. Palmer often menaced people who strayed uninvited onto his hilly, overgrown property, and he was known to retreat into the woods near his home to camp and hunt.

It was to those woods that he fled on Monday night after, the police said, he killed his son’s estranged wife, Tammy Palmer, 39, who had lived with his son and their two children in a trailer home 50 feet from Mr. Palmer’s house................

As the search dragged on, turning up possible traces of Mr. Palmer’s flight — his green pickup truck abandoned here, an ashy campfire there — people in Haverstraw began predicting a bad ending to what had already been several weeks of violence and tension among Mr. Palmer, 73; his son John Palmer; and Tammy Palmer over a restraining order that Ms. Palmer had filed against her husband about a month ago.

“He’s very coldhearted,” John Pannirello, Ms. Palmer’s father, said of the elder Mr. Palmer. “The detective says he won’t be surprised if something goes on between us and him, if he has guns with him. I just have a bad, bad feeling.”

I just hope the good guys don't hesitate to shoot. That old man is out of his mind and determined to have his way no matter who gets killed, even if it is his grandkids' mother. What a sorry excuse for a grandparent.

I sure hope that those children don't get stuck living with their dad. He sounds like a chip off the old block!

..........Relatives said long-simmering tensions between Tammy Palmer and her father-in-law erupted in recent weeks after she received an order of protection from her husband, who allegedly beat her.

The order banned John Palmer from the wooded property on Willow Grove Road that both his father and children lived on.

Tammy Palmer’s parents successfully fought for temporary custody of her two children last week. The children’s father has visiting rights..............

Cops: Slay suspect Eugene Palmer may be ill

http://www.lohud.com/article/20121002/NEWS03/310020045

HAVERSTRAW — The town police chief said Monday he’s become increasingly concerned Eugene Palmer may be physically ill or worse, as police and tracking dogs continued exploring Harriman State Park looking for the 73-year-old woodsman wanted for questioning in the shooting death of his daughter-in-law........

Palmer told a relative he shot his daughter-in-law after weeks of confrontations, according to police and his sister. Tammy Palmer, the mother of two of Palmer’s grandchildren, angered him by obtaining an order of protection this past summer banning his son and her husband, John Palmer, from the property on the accusation he hit her.........

Other articles say the husband 'beat her'.....also they are searching for the FIL but he hasn't even been charged yet even tho he admitted he killed her.....I'm wondering if this chief who is so concerned about Palmer's health and knows all his favorite hunting places, is a hunting buddy/friend?

A tracking dog that specializes in finding dead bodies ran around the woods Tuesday sniffing for slay suspect Eugene Palmer in the area where police had found the 73-year-old woodsman’s truck in Harriman State Park, authorities said.

Police don’t know where Palmer is but no have evidence indicating he left the woods, assuming he went deeper into the 46,000 acres after abandoning his truck on Sept. 24.

Of course, he could have simply left the woods with someone else helping him.

Thanks for the update, raine1212! From your link:

Eugene Palmer, of Stony Point, N.Y., is wanted in the Sept. 24 shooting death of his daughter-in-law, Tammy Palmer, in what authorities described as a "cold-blooded" and "premeditated" murder.

Palmer waited for his 39-year-old daughter-in-law to place her to two children on a school bus before shooting her three times with a bolt action shotgun as she walked up the driveway toward her home, police said.

Very glad to see the LE has not given up on this case, even have Interpol involved. Also, if they say it was 'premeditated' murder, why was he not charged with first degree murder?

It has been reported by police that the grandfather had previously threatened to kill a Department of Environmental Conservation officer.

He was arrested and charged with second-degree aggravated harassment after he made repeated 'life threatening' calls to Department of Environmental Conservation employee Kenneth Didion’s home over a period of months starting in December 1984, The Journal News reported.

Some family members say Eugene Palmer never made it out of Harriman State Park after going on the lam. They believe he died in the woods from major health issues.

Authorities searched a former chemical plant today after receiving a tip that Eugene Palmer was seen on the property. He was not found.

A $2,500 reward is being offered by New York State Crime Stoppers for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Eugene Palmer.

Glad to see more current news on this.

Just found this from last August 2021
FBI Raids Home in Connection to Eugene Palmer Case | The Rockland County Times
“The saga of “FBI Ten Most Wanted” outlaw Eugene Palmer continues, this time with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) conducting a raid Tuesday morning at his granddaughter Jamie Lynn Rose’s residence in Warwick, Orange County.

Rose reported the incident on social media Tuesday night and provided a photo of an armored vehicle parked in her driveway. According to Rose up to 40 gun-wielding agents swarmed her house Tuesday. She said agents were positioned in trees on her property, as well as her roof, and that she and her children were handcuffed, guns were drawn on them and furniture was destroyed in the house.”
