Years ago, I saw a TV segment about a young woman (not a prostitute) who took a ride from a trucker at a gas station or truck stop and was later found dead, left in plain sight by the side of the road, in the snow. I believe the area of the country was the northeastern US, but I'm not positive about that part.
A different, kind-hearted truck driver had given the girl $20, and by determining what time that trucker bought gas, they were able come up with a short list of suspects, i.e. others who had purchased gas around the same time.
They finally tracked down the girl's killer and sentenced him to prison. He was suspected of other, similar killings, but they didn't have any proof. The segment was not about Kibbe or Rhoades, two more infamous trucker killers.
I saw this program quite a while ago, probably in the early-to-mid-90s. I am trying to figure out what show it was and the names of the killer and victim. I believe it aired too long ago to be Medical Mysteries/Forensic Files. I doubt it was Unsolved Mysteries because the killing had been solved already. I watch unsolved-mystery/true-crime shows fairly often, but I have never seen that segment repeated, so I think it must be from a program that doesn't get re-run.
Not being able to remember the details has been bugging me for some time, so if anyone remembers this specific TV segment or the case, please let me know. (My biggest worry is that the guy may have gotten out eventually because he had only been convicted of one killing.)
