GUILTY Ireland - Aoife Phelan, 30, Portlaoise, Co. Laois, 25 Oct 2012

Gosh, how awful. Rest in peace Aoife and your baby. Thoughts are with her family and friends at this tragic time.

It seems very odd that the police seemed to state with such detail they believed poor Aoife had been murdered and thrown off the bridge into the river, when actually she was buried in the garden of (possibly) the suspect (presumably, but not sure if it’s stated so I may have this wrong…). I can only assume this was information fed to the police by the suspect, which in itself seems strange: why confess but give the wrong details? Would the sentence be less for a confession in the absence of a body (ie. if they were looking in the wrong place and therefore she was never found). I doubt that very much, as surely there just has to be proof of death, and the confession would fill in the blanks, so what could be gained by lying (still confessing to murder, just lying about where the body was put afterwards)? And if there was NO confession, what led the police to think that was the case? I don’t expect answers, just processing my thoughts really, and merely speculating!

Anyway, I hope the truth is unravelled and whoever did this is locked away forever. Such a horrible crime, I really had hoped for a happy outcome to this missing story. RIP Aoife x

RIP Aoife and child. Wishing peace and strength for her family. :rose:

A lorry driver charged with the murder of pregnant nanny Aoife Phelan is to receive psychiatric treatment in prison.

Up to 100 onlookers stood in silence outside Portlaoise District Court as Robert Corbet was brought before a special sitting. The court heard the 24-year-old, of Sheffield, Timahoe Road, on the outskirts of the town, said “no” and shook his head when charged with murdering Ms Phelan on October 25, the day she disappeared.

Her badly beaten body was found hidden in a bin buried in a pit at the back of a property on the outskirts of the Co Laois town on Wednesday.

Judge Catherine Staines remanded him in custody to Cloverhill Prison and he will reappear in court in a week.

Dozens of local people lined Main Street in Portlaoise as Corbet was taken to the courthouse in an unmarked garda car.

Corbet is charged with the murder of Ms Phelan at an area known as Capoley, Portlaoise.

Detective Sergeant John Healy said he charged Corbet at 11.27pm yesterday in Portlaoise Garda station.

Solicitor Declan Breen requested his client be given psychiatric attention and legal aid.
Superintendent Yvonne Lundon objected, adding: “The defendant has his own haulage business.”

Two men heckled and shouted abuse at Corbet as he left the courthouse, with one chasing the unmarked car for a short distance.

Saturday, 10 November 2012.

About 2,000 people attended the funeral of murdered nanny Aoife Phelan in Ballyroan, Co Laois this afternoon.

The village came to a standstill with all businesses in the village closed for the funeral and hundreds of parked cars lining the roads on either side as a huge congregation gathered at St Patrick’s Church to pay tribute to the life of the 30-year old, whose body was discovered this week.

Guards of Honour were provided by Ballyroan Ladies Football Club and Ballyroan Brass Band. The band played a selection of poignant tunes, including ‘Abide With Me.’

Speaking at the funeral mass at St Patrick's Church in Ballyroan, Parish Priest Fr Gerard Ahern commended Ms Phelan's mother Betty, father Michael and 11 siblings on their dignity in recent weeks.

Fr Ahern described Ms Phelan’s death as a “senseless" loss.

“That someone should die in the circumstances that Aoife’s life was taken goes beyond human understanding,” he said. “We shouldn’t be here today, but that is the reality we are confronted with.”

He said Ms Phelan was a happy person who lived life to the full. She was caring and thoughtful and had a love of children. She was also a rugby supporter and a Chelsea fan. She had a talent for sketches and a love of music, Fr Ahern said. And he urged family and friends not to forget the good times they shared with "a beautiful caring daughter and sister." Ties of friendship and affection did not unravel with death, he said.

Fr Ahern thanked the community of Ballyroan and paid tribute to the gardaí, in particular the liaison officer appointed to the family.

Emblems placed on Ms Phelan's coffin by family members included teabags, a Chelsea football club mug and a Bon Jovi CD as well as art materials.

Prayers were said for her family, friends and all those who had helped in the search for her body including gardai as well as for the entire community. At the close of the funeral, family members read poems and shared memories of Ms Phelan before she was laid to rest in St Patrick's Cemetery .

May the angels come to meet her and bring her into the presence of God.
May her soul be at God's right hand.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.

A LORRY driver charged with the murder of nanny Aoife Phelan was granted free legal aid today because his haulage business is being wound up.
Robert Corbet (24) was remanded in custody for four weeks to appear before Cloverhill District Court again on December 13.

Gardai told Judge Grainne Malone that they do not know, at this stage, how long before the book of evidence will be served.

The court also heard that gardai had no objection to free legal aid as Corbet's haulage business is in the process of being wound up.

Corbet, who was wearing a black suit, striped shirt and tie, spoke only to confirm Declan Green as his solicitor.

Judge Malone assigned Mr Green on free legal aid and remanded Corbet in custody to appear before Cloverhill District Court on December 13.

From May 2014:

A Laois man has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of 30-year-old nanny Aoife Phelan in 2012...

The defence had asked for a verdict of manslaughter by reason of provocation arising out of Ms Phelan’s alleged threats and asked the jury to ignore the desecration of her body.

However the jury agreed with the prosecution that there was no provocation. The State had described what he did as deliberate and calculated.
