It's really sad what people will do for money. The Irwins will not allow any questions about Blackfish or orcas during their interviews so they know exactly what they are supporting. imo

I feel the ban should include dolphins too. My dream vacation my entire adult life had been to swim with the dolphins. Until a couple years ago anyway. I watched a film about the dolphin captures and kills in a cove in Japan. The practise is horrible, barbaric, and cruel and needs to be stopped. The film is free for viewing on the internet and it's called The Cove. I don't want to put the link in just in case it's not allowed.

I live on an island surrounded by dancing orcas. In the 60's, there were constant shows they performed naturally to amazed audiences. Then they captured SIXTY of our orcas and now, if you want to see one, you have to watch very closely. Put them back in our ocean! Mostly for their sake but even for ours! Forget seeing them beg like a dog for a stupid treat; it is just too wrong on so many levels. SIXTY orcas taken from our pod. And the two surviving still speak the same language as their pod and could and would reunite. I tried to stay off this thread because it just ignites me. I remember being held over the bridge by my dad to watch those whales and then they came and took them. At least our newspaper made them out to be the evil they were. I will see what links I can find, if any. We have a couple of whale museums on the island trying to get our oldest back; it is just heartbreaking!

John Hargrove (former SeaWorld trainer) testified in support of AB-2140 (aka the Blackfish Bill) yesterday. His testimony was a tearjerker. A few snippets:

"We witnessed sterotypic and obsessive compulsive behavior such as banging their faces and heads against the pool walls and floor"

"Nearly every single killer whale regurgitated their food after we ended out interaction."

"We consistently forced our whales into the smallest pool of the facility known as the med pool (8' deep and roughly 15' x 25')...The whales were forced to float motionless for sometimes up to hours at a time."

Blackfish will air again tonight on CNN at 9PM EST. It's also available on Netflix.

The National Aquariam in Baltimore, MD announced that it may retire its eight bottlenose dolphins-possibly to a seaside sanctuary. They also suspended their breeding program. Quote from the CEO of the Aquariam:

"Times have changed, and our understanding of the needs of the animals in our care has changed. A lot of very valid research has been done in the last 20 years to open our eyes to the cognitive and social behavior of dolphins. It's incumbent upon us to avail ourselves of these findings, and that means figuring out how we can better care for these dolphins in the future."

I am all for freeing Tilly, but Tilly could not survive in the wild now. Been in captive too long. Where could he be freed to? This is all the life he knows. Don't get me wrong, I don't like to see these animals caged up either. But where would they go, they would die in the wild now.

A sea pen. He would still be cared for. Just not forced to do circus tricks for his food.

ETA:

If Tilikum were moved to a sea pen (ideally in Iceland, where he too was captured, in 1983), he would be stimulated enough even without direct contact with his caretakers. This would maximize both his welfare and his caretakers' safety.

It will open the door to astronomical lawsuit payouts on behalf of the dead & injured trainers though? Won't it?

I hope so.

I hope Sea World's sued into oblivion... I hope they rethink and cease operations as they are now or go out of business.

I think that documentary should be shown to every elementary public school student. That would finish them off.

Spread the word, not just about SeaWorld but any business that displays cetaceans. I just learned the Mirage in Las Vegas has dolphins. See video below. If I go back to Las Vegas I definitely won't stay there. Profit is the bottom line driving this abuse. When paying customers go elsewhere the incentive to display them disappears.

I watched a video of Samantha Berg (former SeaWorld trainer) speaking and she said the dolphins had it worse than the orcas.
