A further updating of Tarabull's post but not much new:
"Iowa City Police Lt. Mike Brotherton said that person is now in China, something that doesn’t sit right with police.

“It is suspicious that one of her friends ... has gone back to China,” Brotherton said Saturday. “That’s highly suspicious. That’s one of the things we are trying to track down.”"

As to how they found the car:
"After receiving word of her disappearance, the Ames Police Department contacted law enforcement agencies in the region — including the Iowa City Police Department — and requested their assistance. Brotherton said police in Iowa City tracked down her friends and people she knew in Iowa City. That led investigators to Dolphin Lake Point, where the Camry was found."

It's looking like boyfriend killed her in a crime of passion and fled back to China.
 
The bf may of went to China to begin with, but I bet he is not there anymore. He probably made his appearance in China to see family and told them where he was going to be next. They may use the internet to get info. about American news, but I bet they don't know what went on in Iowa with her. And I'm sure he is not where he told family he was going to be. :moo:
 
Since neighbors are saying the car had been recently moved I wonder if he even went to China...iykwim...

One wonders if the U.S. could get the suspect back from China.

Apparently there is no extradition treaty between the U.S. and China:
"Unlike the odd nexus of economic and political treaties known as Hong Kong, mainland China has no extradition treaty with the United States"

It's possible something similar to this case will happen here:

Police want to talk to missing ISU student's boyfriend

Police have confirmed that the main person of interest in a Chinese student's disappearance, previously identified as her boyfriend, has left the country.

"We have reason to believe that the person of interest is in China at this time," said Sgt. Scott Gaarde, public information officer with the Iowa City Police Department. "At this time we have just one person of interest that we're following up leads."

...TE, 18, who lives with his father at the complex where the car was found, said he saw a man move the car Friday.

...CT, 48, who lives in the building across from the scene, also said the car struck her as unusual before Friday night's discovery. She said about two weeks ago, when her son dropped her off at home after a trip to the grocery store, she saw a male get out of the car.

Does this mean Wenzhou Li Xiangnan (age 23) is the suspect's name and even his parents can't contact him?
 
I work at UI. I can tell you that the apartments where the car was found are NOT typically student housing. In fact, they're what locals refer to as the "ghetto". There are a lot of low-income people who live there, many of whom have no affiliation with the university. I have a colleague who lived there when she first moved to the area. I laugh when locals call that area the "ghetto". I'm from one of the coasts, and there's nothing "ghetto" about it; it's just got a lot of low-income people living there. It's not a dangerous complex. This complex is on the far east end of town, and it's located maybe 2 or 3 miles south of Interstate 80. It's possible that the killer could have left the car there, thinking that the reputation of the complex might throw off authorities while they made their exit from town. They could have easily left from Interstate 80 and driven to Chicago and caught a flight (or they could have gone the other way, and flown out from Cedar Rapids).

I taught ESL classes for a while a couple of years ago at Iowa. We have a huge international student population; the largest group coming from China.

If you're curious about what the Chinese student population might be saying, try the board called China Smack. Sometimes, you'll be able to catch some talk over there. I haven't looked at it yet, but I'm planning to do so.

I think the name that they're talking about in your quote is Li Xiangnan. Chinese names are not typically a series of three names. Li is the family name; Xiang-nan (or Xiangnan) is the first name. Wenzhou is the area where Li Xiangnan is from.


EDITED TO ADD: just checked UI directory. There is a person with that name listed as a student.
 
Some of us were wondering about the car and why it had Kentucky license plates:
"Ames Police Commander, Geoff Huff, says after searching Shao’s apartment the following week, they found a receipt from a car dealership in Kentucky with information on a Toyota Camry. The car did not have Iowa license plates. Police ran the license plates through a national registry search and found the 1997 beige Camry was purchased and registered in Kentucky under Shao’s name. Police say the missing girl lived in Kentucky this summer while completing an internship when she purchased the car. In the afternoon of September 26th, the department posted a description of the car; that evening Iowa City police discovered the car with a body in the trunk in an apartment parking lot."

Xiangnan Li

Xiangnan Li, male, date of birth 09-16-1991 with an address of 2401 Hwy East is being sought as a person of interest in this matter as possibly having information regarding the circumstances surrounding the death of Ms. Shao. Li is a Chinese international student at the University of Iowa and a known associate of Ms. Shao. The Iowa City Police Department has reason to believe that Li has returned to China but are still awaiting official confirmation. The Iowa City Police Department is continuing to investigate this matter with the assistance of the Ames Police Department, The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Johnson County Medical Examiner's office, the University of Iowa Police Department, the Johnson County Attorney Office, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Interesting! According to the info linked in the post above, Li lived in the apartments where Shao was found. This is surprising to me, as it isn't a spot where many students live.

The address is wrong in the article by the way. It left out the complete name of the road. It's 2401 Hwy 6 East. If you google that, you'll see that Dolphin Point Enclave is at 2401 Hwy 6 East.

...Zheng Zhang, a recent UI graduate from the same area in China as Xiangnan Li, translated an online article from Wenzhou, China, in which Shao’s parents declined to say much due to the open investigation. Zhang said the article states that Shao’s parents want Li to come forward and not hide from the situation.

Zhang said the story will likely continue to get publicity in China because safety is the number one concern of parents sending their kids abroad.
