Okay...so the area is all private property at this point. Propak has actually occupied the vacant ford lot. Lots of C cans around and some other interesting things I found. In regards to placing a body...there is a new hotel being built directly behind the holiday inn. Its your typical construction zone. Also I found this very interesting that the Agricultural building shares a road way and they have an incinerator on property. Speculate away. These are the only photos I could capture.

its also note worthy that the entrance that was actually blocked was the propak entrance (old ford) there is another entrance to this road right beside the holiday inn..my speculation is if they were searching the area as a whole or any of the other buildings...then both entrances to the road would have been blocked. Today was business as usual at the propak plant...lots of construction activity converting the building into new facilities.

The police block was originally put up

here...which is the second entrance to the propak facility and is the shipping and receiving yard.

Nathan O'Brien investigation expands to Mexico

Transcript of CBC news report regarding the Calgary Police Service sending investigators to Mexico.
This is not an official draft, and is not connected to any of the participants.
This is a rough draft, and alll errors are my own.

News Anchor: Police in Calgary have taken their investigation of the disappearance of an Alberta couple and their grandson outside Canada's borders. Kathy and Alvin Liknes and their five year old boy vanished in June. A suspect has been charged with homicide in the case even though their bodies have never been found. The CBC's Carolyn Dunn is in Calgary with the latest.

Reporter, Carolyn Dunn: We know that Calgary Police are confirming their investigation into the Liknes/O'Brien murders has taken them to Mexico. And specifically to one property that they are searching there.

Here's what we don't know: Where is that property?
Who owns that property? and
What are police specifically looking for?

They're being very tight-lipped about that part of the developing investigation.

But, you know, a Mexico connection has come up previous to this. Alvin and Kathy Liknes were just about to retire, or, at least, spend part of their year in Mexico, and we're not sure if that is what the connection is. Police investigators determined that the Likneses and their five year old grandson, Nathan O'Brien, were dead--in part because of signs of a violent incident at the Liknes home right after a moving sale that was preparing them to move to Mexico. But, an exhaustive search of the entire area around the Liknes home, a lot of the Airdrie area where the Garland family farm is has turned up no bodies, and so that is, obviously, part of what the police continue to investigate this many weeks later.

It's very early in the justice process in such a complicated murder case. Including, where there are no bodies do date anyway. He's expected to be back in court in less than two weeks, on the 14th. In the meantime, authorities have put him on a suicide watch. And, the investigation, as we are told, continues while he is in custody.

Cross Border Case
News Anchor = Rosa Marchitelli = RM Reporter=Devon Heroux = DH
Law Enforcement Instructor, Bow Valley College = Bill Hargarten

RM: Tonight on CBC News Calgary, Cross-Border Case: Calgary Police take the investigation of the deaths of Nathan O'Brien and his grandparents out of the country and into Mexico….
Thanks for joining us. I'm Rosa Marchitelli, Rob is off today.

CBC News has learned the case into the deaths of Nathan O'Brien and his grandparents, Alvin and Kathy Liknes, is now a cross-border investigation.
Devon Heroux uncovered the information today, and Devon what more do we know?

DH: Rosa, Calgary Police have now taken part of their investigation out of Calgary, out of Canada, and into Mexico.

Now, investigators here tell me they are working with local authorities there in Mexico, but that's about it for details. Police remaining tight-lipped about where exactly they're searching in Mexico and what they're looking for.

But this is what we do know. Just prior to the disappearance of Nathan O'Brien and his grandparents, Alvin and Kathy Liknes had an estate sale to sell of many of their Calgary belongings and move to Mexico at least for a time, reportedly, in Mazatlan. Now, the pair, along with their grandson, Nathan O'Brien, who was over having a sleepover, were reported missing at the end of June. For weeks, police searched several locations for the missing three, then finally, on July 25th, Douglas Garland was officially charged with two counts of first degree murder and one count of second degree murder despite the fact that the victims' bodies have yet to be found.

Now, earlier today, I spoke to a former police officer who says even though there are these charges, police, no doubt, are still looking for more evidence.

BH: They have to do due diligence. They can't have tunnel vision and just focus in on one suspect. They have to keep an open mind, look around, go down to Mexico, co-ordinate with the local police, and find out relationships or other things they may have to learn in Mexico.

RM: Devon, I know you've been making a lot of calls on this today, looking to dig up more information, so what are you hearing from Mexican police?

DH: Yeah, Rosa, I contacted both local and state police. Interestingly, both agencies said they're unaware of the Calgary Police investigation in Mexico. However, they did forward me to Interpol Mexico, and a representative with that agency did not deny any knowledge of the investigation. However, much like Calgary Police, opted to say no other words, no other details regarding this now international and highly sensitive case, Rosa.

RM: OK. Thanks Devon. Devon Heroux live from Police Headquarters.

News Anchor=Linda Olsen= LO Field Reporter = Reid Feist - RF Neighbour= Al (preferred not to have his last name known)

Investigation into missing Calgary family moves to Mexico.

LO: It has been over a month since the disappearance and presumed murders of a little boy and his grandparents. And even though police have charged their accused killer, they are no closer to finding the bodies of Nathan O'Brien, and Alvin and Kathryn Liknes. Now their investigation has taken them out of the country. Our Reid Feist is at the former Liknes's home in Parkhill. And, Reid, police sent investigators to Mexico.

RF: That's right, Linda, but they aren't saying exactly why they went there or if they found anything or exactly where in Mexico they went. Now, we do know that Kathryn and Alvin Liknes had purchased a home, we understand, in the Mazatlan area. So, we can only assume, perhaps, that that's where investigators went. Again, though, police aren't commenting much more than confirming their investigation taking them to Mexico to cover all of their bases.

Now the Liknes's had sold this Parkhill home many months ago, and they were renting it back from the new owner with the plan to spend at least part of their year in the Mexico area.

Back here in Calgary, I can tell you over the last couple of weeks the inside of the home, or at least what we can see through the windows has changed significantly. It appears that the remaining furniture in the home has been removed. And, one of the neighbours we spoke to this afternoon confirms that.

Al: The moving truck was here, and I came over and talked to the man, and he said "do you want to see the inside of the house", and I says, "well OK". So he showed me around and I noticed that the rug was picked up and there was a lot of cleaning on the wall and what have you. And the reason why the moving truck was here was because the sale in his words "didn't go that well" and so he was movin' this out and I says "is it goin' to an auction" and he says "no, it's going into storage"

LO: And Reid, police are still carrying out extensive searches in the Calgary area and beyond.

RF: That's right, so not only has this taken them now to Mexico, but the police did confirm to me today that they did complete some searches in the Calgary and Alberta area as recently as this long weekend. Although they're not saying exactly what they were looking for, or where, now not much has been said since mid-July. And that is, of course, when Douglas Garland was charged with two counts of first degree murder and one count of second degree murder. In the deaths of Alvin and Kathryn Liknes and Nathan O'Brien. Douglas Garland is set to make his next court appearance next Thursday at the Calgary Court Centre.

Calgary police take trip to Mexico in case of missing trio.
August 5, 2014

New Anchor: Tara Nelson = TN
Reporter: Camilla Di Giuseppe = CG

TN: Hello, and thank you for joining us.

There are developments on two fronts tonight in the disappearance of a Calgary boy and his grandparents. Camilla Di Giuseppe joins us now, and Cammie the investigation into the murders of Nathan O'Brien and Alvin and Kathryn Liknes has moved outside Canada.

CG: That's right, Tara.

The murder case of five year old Nathan O'Brien, as you mentioned, and his grandparents has extended across the border and into Mexico. That's where Calgary detectives are right now, working with local police there.

Alvin and Kathy Liknes were planning to relocate to Mexico before they vanished in June from their Parkhill home along with their grandson. Police say they've been murdered, even though no bodies have been found. Douglas Garland has been charged with two counts of first degree murder, and one count of second degree murder. Detectives are not disclosing where the investigation has taken them into Mexico but the family had said previously that the Likneses were moving to Mazatlan.

TN: Camilla, some of the earlier charges laid against Douglas Garland have now been stayed.

CG: That's right. We spoke with Crown Prosecutor, Shane Parker, today who tells us that he requested that the charges of impersonation and a fraudulent credit card be stayed, and rather use that as evidence in the murder investigation.

Initially, remember those charges were called "unrelated" to the case. And now, we do know that the prosecutor said that he has not seen a need for different proceedings regarding those charges. Again, 54 year old Douglas Garland is the only suspect in this case. And, Tara, he will be back in court on August 14th.

TN: OK. Thank you, Camilla.

Calgary Police investigation goes into Mexico
News Anchor = Beatrice Vaisman Reporter = Rob Gibson = RG

BV: The investigation into the disappearance of a Calgary family now goes international.

Calgary police confirm investigators have now turned to Mexico as they try to gather details on the disappearance and presumed murder of the family. Alvin and Kathy Liknes and their five year old grandson, Nathan O'Brien, have been missing since June 30th.

Douglas Garland, from Airdrie, Alberta, has been charged in connection with these suspected deaths.

More now on this developing story, let's bring in our Rob Gibson. He's standing by in Calgary. And, Rob, police officials have largely remained mum about this very case, but what have you been able to find out today?

RG: Well Beatrice, I just got off the phone with the police department, and they have confirmed that officers are working with Mexican authorities. They are in Mexico. They would not go into the exact location of where they are, but, before this investigation began, we did learn that the Garland family and the Liknes family combined, have some property in Mexico.

We don't know whose specifically that property is, but we do know that they had intended to sell off their property here in Calgary, move to Mexico for a while before going back to Edmonton. So, presumably, that is the location where police are investigating.

They tell me they are making sure that they leave no stone unturned in this investigation. They're essentially, the way they described it to me, crossing their t's and dotting the i's, in this investigation. They understand that there are many unanswered questions and that they do know more than they are revealing. But they won't say anything else because this case is now before the courts and, as you mentioned, Douglas Garland goes back before the courts on August 14th. Beatrice.

BV: Rob, where does the investigation stand in Alberta itself? You know, they were combing several different properties across that province. So are they still looking at several or like any region in particular in Airdrie, Alberta, or in the Calgary region?

RG: Well, they spent a great deal of time - almost two weeks at the farm owned by Douglas Garland's parents in Airdrie. They have now wrapped up that investigation. They are no longer on that farm. They have also closed down the Parkhill location where the Likneses had lived, and they are not investigating there. But, at the end of the process, what they did tell us was that they had a thirty day plan that they were going to follow through on. And this trip to Mexico is part of that thirty day plan.

I expect to hear more details on where the investigation is at when we attend the court hearing on August 14th. At that point, because of the difficulty and the amount of evidence that has been laid out before the defence attorney, they'll have more details on exactly where this investigation is at. Beatrice.

BV: Certainly they want to get all the details together before the prime suspect in this case, Douglas Garland, appears in court next--in just a few weeks now. Rob, thank you for breaking this down for us.

RG: Any time.

BV: That's our Rob Gibson reporting live from our Calgary bureau.

Missing family: Search of rural home enters fourth day
Amber Alert: Police continue search near Airdrie
July 8, 2014

Global News

News Hour Calgary

News Anchor: Scott Fee = SF Reporter: Reid Feist = RF

SF: A rural area, outside of Airdrie, continues to be the focus of a police investigation into the disappearance of five year old Nathan O'Brien and his grandparents. The three vanished from the Calgary home of Alvin and Kathy Liknes on June 29th. Reid Feist joins us now from the search area with the latest. Good afternoon, Reid.

RF: Yes. Good afternoon, Scott. We begin with some developments in this case. Calgary Police and the R.C.M.P. will be holding a news conference at 2:00 p.m. this afternoon. As we zoom in here and show you R.C.M.P. and Calgary Police searching this area here. So, we don't expect a lot of details. Police have warned us there are not many new details, but they will update us. Again, at 2:00 p.m. we will have all the details on our website--globalnews.ca/calgary.

But first, let me update you what has been happening here. This is a treed area about two kilometres northeast of the acreage. This morning, about thirty officers set out on foot, and they have been going shoulder to shoulder quite deep into this wooded area and farmland as well. It appears they are taking a break now for lunch, and, whether they have found anything or not, we haven't really seen them take anything out. Although, they are marking items as they become of interest in this field.

Now, apart from that, there are little to no other updates, so 2:00 p.m. may provide more.

We do have a little bit more information about Douglas Garland, a person of interest in this case. We spoke to Allen Liknes who is the son of the missing Alvin Liknes. He is married to Garland's sister. And so, he told us today on the phone that he was surprised, and the family was, to see Douglas Garland's green pickup (or what appeared to be his pickup) in the pictures last Friday.

He doesn't believe Douglas Garland and his father, Alvin Liknes, have spoken in about seven years. Douglas worked for Alvin. But, apparently, when that business faltered, the working relationship ended. It didn't end on a bad note, though, apparently. Allen last saw Douglas Garland at Thanksgiving* at his in-laws last fall. But he noted that, he said Douglas was a bit of a loner and he didn't speak to him that much.

So, a little bit more in terms of the connection which is a pretty obvious part of this investigation here. Again, at 2:00 p.m. this afternoon, we expect some more details as the police and R.C.M.P. will update us for the first time since Saturday. But, they are warning us that there likely will not be huge developments in this case. As the search here at this part of northern H, Airdrie rather, continues this noon hour.

Again, we'll have all those details on our website this afternoon, Scott, at globalnews.ca/calgary. Back to you.

SF: Appreciate the update. Thanks, Reid.

RF: You're welcome.

SF: And we'll continue to talk more about this developing story as Douglas Garland has a bail hearing on Wednesday.

Yesterday, he appeared in court on another matter. He made a brief appearance via CCTV from the Remand Centre**, accused for the second time of stealing the identity of a fourteen year old boy who died in a car crash back in 1980. Garland does not have a lawyer and remains in custody.

Rod O'Brien, Nathan's father, was at court for the appearance, but did not speak to the media.

* Thanksgiving fell on Monday, October 14th, 2013 in Canada

** refers to the Calgary Remand Centre

Reporter = Nancy Hixt = NH Defence Lawyer = Kim Ross = KR Defence Lawyer = Allen Hepner = AH

KH: Police are into their seventh week of scouring rural fields for the bodies of Nathan O'Brien and his grandparents, Alvin and Kathryn Liknes. Douglas Garland is charged with killing the family, and, Global News has learned, police continue to push the 54 year old for information in the case.

Homicide detectives have been going to see Garland at the Remand Centre on a somewhat regular basis for several weeks now.

KR: My understanding is that the investigation is continuing. And, I know the police have been up a couple of times to see Mr. Garland as part of that continuing process.

KH: Defence lawyer, Kim Ross, won't comment on details of those visits or how he's advised Garland to deal with police. It's an investigative technique that's not unheard of but not that common according to prominent defence lawyer, Allen Hepner.

AH: I've had clients where police have visited my clients more than once. Even after I have been retained. The simple answer is to tell the client not to speak to anyone except me. It happens. It's not that frequent, but it's happened.

KH: Garland has been under constant surveillance after being put on suicide watch in the Remand Centre. He's scheduled to appear in court later this week. What will happen then depends on whether the defence was given the case before the court date.

KR: Well, we're still waiting for disclosure. As we indicated to the court last day, that we put it over to this coming Thursday so we could get disclosure together. I still haven't got anything yet, so I anticipate that will be coming-- forthcoming pretty soon.

KH: The Crown has said they're confident that the case is strong, even without the bodies of Nathan and his grandparents. It's expected large amounts of disclosure will be presented to the defence in the next couple of days.
