My father was a pilot for Eastern until their final flight in 1991.
My parents best friend was the copilot of flight 401, the flight that crashed in the everglades you are speaking of. As a little girl I used to spend nights with Bert, his wife Janet, and their little poodle dog Francois. They never had any children. I had a wonderful childhood and loved the trips to the airports with my father. Growing up we loved to hear the stories from my fathers perspective about airline/airport events. I miss him.

Still no news on a flight. Phoned the special dedicated line as our original flight number was listed on there for us to call. We were kept on hold for thirty minutes before being cut off, so tried again for the same thing to happen.. At £1.60 a minute they could at least have enough staff manning the phones to stop this added extra costs..
Not many planes were seen in the sky today so unsure to how many lucky travellers managed to fly home. Lots of coaches were pulling up though collecting for the airport.

We are not worried about leaving our cases and just carrying on a small laptop size bag. Safety is our main concern. I feel more confident in flying now that no baggage will be going in the hold.

I still think that there is more to all this. Maybe intercepted a direct threat to uk flights next???

As a child could you tell/sense all the he#L your dad was going through as Lorenzo destroyed his airline?

The Oct. 31 crash of Metrojet flight 9268 was only the third hull loss of an AirbusA321-200 and the worst accident so far involving the type............

...In 2010 an Airblue A321 crashed into the side of a mountain during a poor weather approach to Islamabad. All 152 on board died. The only other A321 hull losses affected a Transasia Airways A321-100. The aircraft, delivered in 1996, hit a utility vehicle on the runway while landing in Tainan/Taiwan injuring two construction workers. The aircraft was damaged beyond repair.

per passenger mile basis the A321 is likely to be 1,000 times safer than a car.

Back to Russia.........

No matter what caused the fatal crash of a Russian airliner in Egypt, the answer will almost certainly hit Russia hard — but not President Vladimir Putin.

There's no indication of a force-majeure cause such as freak weather, leaving terrorism or aircraft failure as the leading suspects. Either answer could challenge Russia's new self-confidence....
.........

........Russian officials have assiduously refrained from speculating on the cause of the crash and upbraided the news media for doing so. Most of those killed were Russian tourists.

But Russia's sudden decision Friday to suspend passenger flights to all destinations in Egypt — a move it said reflects concerns about Egyptian airport security — strongly suggests that officials' prime suspicion is that a bomb was spirited aboard the Metrojet

The possibility of a technical failure of the plane, which had suffered tail damage in a 2001 accident, is receding from speculation although not overtly rejected.......

The crash has provoked a national wave of grief and anxiety, .
.
although such concerns could be strong, they are unlikely to gain enough momentum to threaten Putin's policies or his hold on power.
"Doubts could arise: 'Do we really need to be there? What are we actually doing there?' ...

A proven terror attack on a plane full of Russian tourists could be a traumatic reminder to Russians of the vulnerability they felt to terrorism connected to the wars in Chechnya,

A technical cause of the Metrojet crash would be an unsettling reminder for Russians............when Russian airlines became notorious for aging, badly maintained aircraft and improperly trained pilots

Russia's major airlines have sharply modernized their fleets and raised service to international standards

Feel like an idiot!

the first 30 seconds of this I had no idea (do not know why!) of the mess over there -

http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/thousands-tourists-stranded-egypt-russia-probes-metrojet-cause/

Russia sending 90 (not a typo!) over there this weekend to get everyone! TV station just had it on in background The telegraph says 45 that the entire airport gate wise ! At this point they are guessing at least 10 days ......

My goodness there are 50, 000 stranded in total - I had just been thinking hey , no guilt , stuck here on someone else tab - enjoy! And its really like powerlessness your stuck. And just the logistics, of smoothing this out at a small airport are going to be catastrophic, gates (47) total, limits on handling 747 's enough fuel , wow .....if we went all 747 it would take about 111 flights just for them, well I guess that is why Russia sent 45 or90

Seven officials involved in security at Sharm el-Sheikh airport, several for more than a decade, told the AP of the gaps, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the press. Several said the malfunctioning scanner had been noted in security reports to their superiors, but the machine was not replaced.

bribe-taking by poorly paid policemen monitoring X-ray machines. "I can't tell you how many times I have caught a bag full of drugs or weapons that they have let through for 10 euros or whatever," he said.

http://www.csmonitor.com/World/Midd...ians-stranded-in-Egypt-after-flights-grounded

Around 80,000 Russians are stranded in Egypt after the Kremlin grounded all flights to the country following the crash of a Russian airliner in the Sinai Peninsula, Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich said on Saturday.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/wor...-British-tourists-missile-latest-updates.html

Current estimates are that it will take ten days to return the some 18,000 British tourists in Sharm el-Sheikh to the UK.

CARIIS, I enjoyed your post. It was evident you were recalling an event that had made a lasting impression on you. It was told with feeling that jumped right off the page to the reader.

I like your style!

"stranded" is media hype. People seem to be going on with their holidays. Some of the "chaos" at the airport appears to be people who aren't booked to leave for another week or two going to the airport anyway.

I still shake my head when I read about thousands of people that go on vacation to a country that has so much turmoil, wth. I just read about traveling to egypt at, http://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/country/egypt.html
and for the life of me I would never ever go to a place like that to sunbath on a beach. Maybe it's just me but is egypt the only country over there that has beaches or is it a cheap destination that the dangers are worth it?

As I wrote before, I travel to Egypt frequently - however, I am not interested in sunbathing on beaches, I am interested in diving, history and culture. Furthermore, it's just a 2.5 hour flight for me. I would not take my children (if I had any) though. I also don't travel in big tour groups - mainly as I don't like groups but also I believe groups are those that would be targetted.

fact tid bits....... no me running mouth...... no worries!

"ISLAMIC State militants suspected of blowing up a Russian passenger plane have a network of insurgents working in bars, restaurants and hotels across Sharm El Sheikh.

Just great the first one I want to share comes out huge ...oh the ironies ......
