GUILTY MI - Mackenzie Maison, 5, dies of extreme neglect, Port Huron, 26 May 2015

...They grieved for her death and all the things little girls do and that Mackenzie never will experience — the first day of kindergarten, making chalk drawings on a sidewalk, acting in a school play.

Celebrating her sixth birthday...

According to this article, MM had not started school yet. This likely means that her birthday was after December 1 which is the cut-off date for most children to start school. I wonder if MM and/or her little sister had gone to pre-school? I also wonder if HM's biological children attended pre-school or public school in the case of the older of her two children who I believe are 6 and 3? Doesn't sound like stepmom intends to take the blame for the death of her husband's daughter or abuse of the younger sister. I'm sure her own two children were well-fed and cared for, but she's lost them for now. Sad situation for all involved :(

Poor baby, I'm glad she's improving. This is such a weird one to me. From the family's FB pages and photos of the girls, it really did seem like things were mostly okay. Sad stuff :(

I didn't see this posted, the trial has been changed until January, 2016:

The trial of a Port Huron couple charged in the death of 5-year-old Mackenzie Maison has been pushed to 2016.

The adjournment of the trial for Andrew and Hilery Maison from Nov. 3 to Jan. 20 will allow the pair’s lawyers extra time to obtain and evaluate further evidence in the case.

What a sad story. There are so many things that don't make sense and are just puzzling.

1. Mackenzie's bio mom lost custody to the dad in 2013 and she hadn't seen her kids in 1.5 yrs when MM died. Why? Even if you lose custody, why wouldn't you want to maintain a relationship?
2. HM's facebook is filled with pictures of her taking selfies with her friends. Why didn't her friends do anything about this?
3. HM's dad says the girls didn't like to eat.......Really? A 5yo gets down to 25lbs and nobody thinks to go to the dr?

"Murder charges upgraded in torture death" - The Times Herald

Open murder charges have been amended for a Port Huron couple accused in the death of 5-year-old Mackenzie Maison.

The prosecutor's office are charging Hilery and Andrew Maisons with first-degree felony murder.

Senior Assistant Mona Armstrong said the designation was made last week. She said the charges reflect the prosecution’s belief that Mackenzie died as a result of the Maisons’ alleged first-degree child abuse or torture.

“It basically more specifically defines the charges,” Armstrong said.

First-degree murder carries a penalty of life in prison without parole.

Five-year-old Mackenzie Maison had severe pneumonia in both lungs when she died. But it was her underlying dehydration and malnutrition that made her susceptible to the infection in the first place, Medical Examiner Daniel Spitz said...

Spitz was one of four to testify in the third day of trial for Hilery and Andrew Maison...

At least one juror wiped away tears as Spitz showed them photos of various stages of bruising on Mackenzie’s head, face, torso, arms, leg and feet.
