(Fyi--Custodial interference is a class E felony in TN , 1-6 years sentence).

The sounded plenty rational in that proceeding, IMO. He understood the questions, answered them without hestitating, didn't sound the least bit confused by what was going on.

His retort that he didn't "understand" the kidnapping charge obviously didn't mean he didn't understand it, just that he thinks it's unfair he's going to be held accountable for what he seems to think he was entitled to do.

It's pretty telling he didn't make any statements to arresting officers. If he is delusional enough to genuinely think it was perfectly normal to snatch his niece and hide in the woods with her for 8 days, seems to me he would have been protesting up a storm as he got arrested, like--whoa!! Must be a big 'ole mistake somewhere! I was just taking her camping!!

Silence, without a lawyer advising him, IMO reflects clear thinking and an understanding that what he did was wrong.

If he were to get out, he wouldn't be able to go home, right? Because his house is too close to theirs? I mean, I doubt he's making a million bond, just a thought.

This.

This sounds like Simpson was angry and annoyed that other people were allowed to pick C up and take her places without clearing it with him first. His only question in court was why is it okay for her dads girlfriend to do the same thing as he did ?.................meaning take her somewhere without permission and without telling anybody.

The first thing they'll do is ask for a change of venue due to the publicity.

Secondly, his attorney will ask for and probably receive a reduction in bail, since no sex crime occurred. There wasn't a single charge presented that this was sexually motivated in any way, nor that anything like that occurred.

Thirdly, his history of sole custody of C and her sister over twill be presented to show he was a loving, caring guardian for years and years. His actions were the result of anger and resentment at people who felt they could take "his child" any time they wanted to, without saying so much as "boo" to him.

Hate to say it folks, but this guy may not even get a year in jail for this little caper. There are going to be jurors that will sympathize with his position on the matter.

This is going to end up being some kind of crime of passion defense due to him being distraught over losing control of C. Sit and watch.

Thank you! I like this judge!

I heard the same thing. Is this man completely crazy ? Is he setting up some whacked out defense? Ugh.

Shows his immaturity level- "but she does it" (meaning pull her out of school). He sees no difference in his behavior.

ROGERSVILLE (WATE) – The case of a Hawkins County man charged with kidnapping his niece, leading to an AMBER Alert and a massive search, has been bound over to the grand jury after a hearing during which Gary Simpson himself took the stand.

-snip

Wiley read that Simpson’s initial plan was to take C to a friend’s home in Roanoke, Virginia. He said he felt Cs father, James Trent, was not treating her well and cared more for her younger sister. Simpson said he and C went on hikes while they were hiding and during those days, he had two cell phones, but smashed one with a rock and lost another while hiking.

ROGERSVILLE — Shortly after his May 12 arrest, Gary Simpson reportedly told investigators he’d taken 9-year-old CT eight days earlier because he felt her father treated her unfairly and favored her sister.

In a statement Simpson gave to investigators, which was read aloud Wednesday in Hawkins County Sessions Court, Simpson’s plan was to take C to live with a friend in Roanoke, get a job, and homeschool her.
