OH - Pike County: 8 people from one family dead as police hunt for killer(s) - #25

Not open for further replies.
Good question. This has been my theory all along (outside killers with a local helper). But who was the local person? Maybe Kenneth since he was last & had only one gun shot?

IMO, it could have been any one of family and or friends who spent time in their homes. Enough to know the layout of rooms, etc. To be able to draw a rough sketch of the layout of rooms, who slept where, etc. Retired DEA agent who was interviewed early in the investigation also says they were probably watched carefully in the days and weeks leading up to the killings. Observing when they get up, when they go to bed, who lives where, entrances to homes, who locks their doors and how, who has watch dogs and when are they out vs in, etc.

Anyone could do that. Strangers doing surveillance could have been what caused CRSr to become suspicious in the weeks before the murders. It was reported by a local they had been stopped by gun-wielding Chris Sr and others when driving at night on Union Hill Rd.in the days before the murders. If true, something had them on alert. This could also explain Reader's references to neighbors who might know something. If you were a neighbor who might have seen strangers watching the Rhoden homes prior to the murders and knew those strangers may be affiliated with a murderous drug cartel, would you tell anyone?

JMO, the killers used both local sources of info and did some of their own surveillance. Some have speculated here that the locals who provided information about interior layout of homes, etc. might not have been aware that murder would be involved.

My primary theory is a hybrid of CRSr informing LE about drug activity/outside organized crime with local Boss Hogg associations that are hampering the investigation.

Video of entire press conference today

883 tips, 465 interviews so far, some multiple interviews of same people. 38 search warrants, 60 cyber extractions. New billboard asking for tips in the case.

Fear of retaliation remains a very big factor. Killings sent a shockwave through the community. People are afraid the same thing that happened to Rhodens will happen to them if they talk.

DeWine still not speaking about a motive. Biggest BCI investigation in history. Know a whole lot more about what's been going on in Pike County for decades re criminal activities. have part of the puzzle. BCI meets every week. DeWine gets updated every few weeks. Some theories still on the table, others off.

Still saying people in Pike County know things, want them to come in.

Wont talk about what's been ruled out.

Reporter: Rhoden family should be able to get personal belongings from trailers in storage. DeWine now says it's probate court who decides this. Some is evidentiary. Cars can be released. Obligation to do everything to get arrests and convictions.

Reader: Never seen such a major crime. Four crime scenes, 8 people. Very different from other murders he's investigated. Had to learn how to process all of the crime scenes, so many. Had to help families, many needed victim advocacy, someone to talk to.

He gets frustrated, demands answers. Stay steadfast, keep going, hard to be patient. Meets with staff, asks questions, gets answers.

Call Crime Stoppers and make a donation to the reward fund.

Reporter asks about comparing this case to girl's kidnapping and murder in Delphi, IN. DeWine says they're reached out to FBI on a numerous occasions. Agree we need people to donate more to Crimestoppers for Rhoden case.

Reader: People shouldn't judge Pike County or people's lifestyles. It's a terrible crime, needs to be solved.

I think he cares, too. JMO, he may also feel frustrated in his attempts to bring justice. I just get a feeling he's really restricted in how he is allowed to investigate this case.

He did elaborate a little when he said he thought the killers were local. He added a brief qualifier that local people may know the killers who weren't necessarily local. I'll have to go back and listen to that again, but I'd really like to see a reporter ask him follow up questions about what he means by that statement.

Eight murders in four separate crime scenes. 30+ bullets fired. Unless there's an experienced serial killer living undetected in Pike County, it's difficult to believe there isn't enough evidence in all that to arrest and convict a local novice killer. For some reason, Reader is reluctant to admit that someone from outside the area may have been behind these killings, with local assistance. He finally hinted at that today, but I wonder why he's resisted saying so.

I think DeWine is holding Reader back and not allowing him to move on the case. I think DeWine is scared that a mistrial or acquittal will hurt his political ambitions. He made it clear at the start that he, and the BCI, he heads, was in charge. He can't afford for them to look bad, but he IS by what he is doing. It is getting harder all the time to not believe they are hiding something or covering up something by suppressing absolutely everything. The DOJ needs to be brought in.

Sheriff asks for more reward money to help find Pike County killers

http://www.dispatch.com/news/201704...reward-money-to-help-find-pike-county-killers

“The fear of retaliation from whoever these killers are, that’s real,” said Reader who, alongside Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine, updated reporters this morning as the one-year anniversary of the homicides approaches on April 22.

He pointed to the reward poster beside him, showing the faces of the eight who were shot to death that night, most while asleep in their beds. “They’re not just adults. Some are children,” he said. “There are babies who will grow up without their parents and grandparents.”

(Those with information can call 740-773-TIPS (8477), 1-855-BCI-OHIO (224-6446) or 740-947-2111 and the reward money can be donated to Southern Ohio Crimestoppers at southernohiocrimestoppers.org)

Family members still waiting for answers say updates from investigators have dwindled. Glenna Gilley, whose 20-year-old granddaughter, Hannah Gilley, was among those killed, speculated that people with information might be afraid to come forward.

"I'm sure there's someone somewhere that knows something," she said Wednesday.

Gilley, 65, described her granddaughter as a good person and "a wonderful mother."

I have worked with Angela Canepa in the past. She's confident, caring, kind, and smart as a whip. She was the prosecutor for the case of the man who killed my father. She was wonderful. MOO.

RSBM

2. There is an assistant prosecutor from DeWine's office working on the investigation named Angela. Never heard of her before. Has anyone seen or heard of her working on the case? Does she go to Pike County? Has anyone seen her there personally investigating anything?

They did report the approvals back last October. CR1's was still pending but no one filed for DR's or KR's expenses until later.

On Dec. 12 the family asked for assistance for DR's expenses, and JM rec'd word that the payment had been approved, during the first week of April.

From my understanding, there has yet to be a filing for assistance with KR's, or GR's, funeral expenses.

Thank you to those who provided the press conference. Readers demeanor and sadness made my eyes water. I've believed Reader to be a genuine person from the start. Dewine did give me some hope for this being solved. He gave the impression that it will be solved before his term is up. Does anyone know when that might be? He wouldn't give an ETA but did say he "thinks" it will be solved before he moves out. We also learned that it is probate holding up the release of some of the personal property, such as vehicles. That leads me to believe this case doesn't involve the vehicles. It's also the 1st time I've heard them mention for sure the only 2 properties with grow ops were KR and CR1. We all already had figured that, but I don't recall reading that anywhere.

DeWine is running for governor, I THINK in the fall of 2018. Running against John Kasich.

Actually, Kasich is term-limited and can't run for re-election. He's talking of running for president again in 2020.

DeWine already announced he's running for governor and has some competition according to various news stories.

Thanks. I had seen the news of applications, etc. before. Perhaps the stories are now appearing because final approval was given for the funds.

My main take aways from the press conference:

- they don't know (or they don't have sufficient evidence) who committed these crimes; I got the feeling that DeWine is more secure about who is responsible but is being held back and kept on a tight leash

- the grow operations were "commercial" (in other words, they were large scale operations and worth a good bit of money) and they were found on Chris Sr & Kenneth's properties

- the AG would not comment on other drugs that may have been found on one or more of the properties (which just tells me that there WERE other drugs... otherwise, he'd say no)

- they believe the suspects are local or have local connections

- with all the talk about the grow ops, the fact that he mentioned the DEA has had some involvement, and how they kept stressing that this was a homicide investigation (implying they didn't care about a potential informant's drug activity), I believe LE has some indication that drugs played a major role in the motive

Well, darn. That's a long time.

.
Not nearly as long as it seems. The actual election is November, 2018. He'll want to start campaigning well before election day. He's not going to want to go into electioneering mode with this unsolved murder case hovering over his head, and having to field questions on the campaign trail. It looks as if there could be several contenders for the Gov.'s seat in 2018. Solving this case would certainly put a feather in DeWine's cap when he starts electioneering.

You are so right! How excellent will his resume look with solving Ohio's crime of the century? Especially if it happens really close to campaign time while it's still fresh on everyone's hearts and minds. But, you make another good point, Nov 2018 is not very much time at all to crack this case AND get convictions.

On the other hand, Reader seems very passionate about this crime. I think he's going to keep on it until the very end, not to say Dewine is not, of course. I just think he has way more experience in dealing with tragedy in his line of work. He's probably better at suppressing feelings and he's not local to Pike County, at least I don't think he is.

I couldn't agree more with your take on the press conference. I have been all over the place in terms of motive, but have now settled on the motive being drugs and possibly more than marijuana. In at least two press conferences, including yesterday's, DeWine has stated that they know a lot more about criminal activity in Pike Co. now. I think this very telling about where the investigation has led them.
