Testimony has wrapped up in the trial of three girls charged in a school bathroom fight that left a 16-year-old Delaware girl dead.

A pediatric cardiologist called as the last witness testified Monday that Amy Joyner-Francis of Wilmington suffered from a rare heart condition that had gone undetected by her doctors, and that her death after a fight at Howard High School of Technology in April 2016 was unforeseeable.

An autopsy found that Joyner-Francis died of sudden cardiac death, aggravated by physical and emotional stress from the fight.

Delaware judge convicts girl in fatal school bathroom attack

A 17-year-old girl was convicted Thursday of criminally negligent homicide in a school bathroom attack in Delaware that left a 16-year-old classmate dead.

The ruling came in a nonjury trial for three girls charged in the death of Amy Joyner-Francis. All three were 16 when the fight happened last year and were tried as juveniles. The girl convicted of homicide also was found guilty of misdemeanor conspiracy.

One of the other girls, who in an online post said "we gonna get her.... she's scared," and kicked Joyner-Francis while she was on the floor struggling to defend herself, also was convicted of conspiracy.

Family Court Judge Robert Coonin acquitted the third girl of conspiracy, saying there was no evidence she threatened Joyner-Francis and was even seen on a cellphone video pulling the girl convicted of homicide off Joyner-Francis.

If that is what she was capable of at age 16 years, I shudder to think of what sort of adult she is going to grow up to become. I really don't think the 6 months in JDC is going to change her attitude to life and her lack of respect for other people's lives either. I think she is already BAD.

On Tuesday, the Delaware Supreme Court overturned the criminally negligent homicide conviction of Trinity Carr in the 2016 beating death of Joyner-Francis.

"No reasonable factfinder could conclude that (Carr's) attack — which inflicted only minor physical injuries — posed a risk of death so great that Tracy was grossly deviant for not recognizing it," the Supreme Court opinion reads.

Carr's conspiracy conviction will stand, but Thursday's Supreme Court order directs the Family Court to resentence Carr based only on that offense. In June, Carr was sentenced on the homicide and conspiracy charge to six months at Grace Cottage — a secure residential program for female youth near Wilmington.

Statement from the family:

"The most dangerous city in the nation for children between the ages of 12-17 is Wilmington, DE. The overturned ruling by the Delaware Supreme Court today regarding the murder of Amy Joyner-Francis supports this fact. Did the justices see the video because the assailant literally kicked Amy six times in the head and landed over 20 body shots?

She and her cohorts plotted Amy's death on social media and they get to walk freely, while Amy's Family is bound by her untimely death.

Delaware is in desperate need of a complete overhaul politically, socially and most importantly spiritually. May God Bless the Family of Amy Joyner-Francis who cannot find justice or peace in the First State."

Delaware Supreme Court upholds conviction in Joyner-Francis death

The Delaware Supreme Court has upheld the conspiracy conviction of a teen involved in the death of Amy Inita Joyner-Francis, who died after being attacked by classmates in a Howard High School of Technology bathroom in April 2016.

Zion Snow was one of two classmates found delinquent – the family court term for guilty – of conspiracy in the attack that led to the death of Joyner-Francis and who appealed the ruling.

Last year, Snow was sentenced to 18 months of community supervision. That will stand under the court's recent order.

Joyner-Francis family sues school district, classmates for negligence

The lawsuit filed in New Castle County Superior Court Monday seeks compensatory and punitive damages from the New Castle County Vo-Tech School District, which oversees Howard, as well as Trinity Carr and Zion Snow, students who were charged in the attack.

The filing argues school officials' failure to monitor students' bathroom activities amounts to negligence in its duty to protect Joyner-Francis. The filing also claims and that her attackers acted recklessly.

Roger Landon, an attorney representing the Joyner-Francis family, said school officials should have done more to prevent such an attack.

Trinity Carr, a teen involved in the fatal beating of a classmate at a Wilmington high school in 2016, was resentenced this week after the Delaware Supreme Court overturned her negligent homicide conviction.

Carr, 18, was sentenced to time and community service already served and was released, according to court documents. Nearly a year ago, Carr was sentenced on the homicide and a conspiracy charge to six months at Grace Cottage – a secure residential program for girls near Wilmington.
