UK UK - Melanie Hall, 25, Bath, Somerset, 9 June 1996

I am a RN and years ago many doctors would increase the morphine dose of a moribund patient and they would die, it was seen as a kindness.

There has long been a rumour that the dying George V was offed by his doctor in 1935 with a large dose of morphine so that news of his death could make the deadline for the morning papers.

It's more than a rumour. The perpetrator is on record as having done so. It became public knowledge in 1986, when the contents of his diary became public. And it wasn't morphine, it was a morphine-cocaine mixture aka a speedball.

Have we got a thread for that? ;)

I hope Melanie's killer is found after all these years.

MELANIE Hall’s parents are optimistic that police will catch their daughter’s murderer after a DNA breakthrough on the 20th anniversary of her disappearance.

(...)

Mr Hall, 72, told the Wiltshire Times: “We are delighted the police have reached a stage where they can possibly get a full DNA profile and find out more about where Melanie was dumped.

“I would like to see someone convicted and jailed. I would like to see it happen in the name of Melanie. That would be the last thing we could do for her.

“It will not make us feel any better because you long for your child back and that is not going to happen. We have to live with that.

“I want to see a result for the police too, for their efforts. (...)

Breaking News Man arrested for murder of Melanie Hall

"A man has been arrested on suspicion of the murder of a young woman who went missing 20 years ago.

The 45-year-old, who has not been named, was arrested yesterday by police investigating the murder of Melanie Hall.

Melanie was last seen at the former Cadillacs nightclub in Walcot Street, Bath, in the early hours of Sunday 9 June 1996.

Her remains were found in vegetation off the northbound slipway at junction 14 of the M5 (Thornbury) in 2009.

Det Supt Andy Bevan said: “Melanie’s parents have been informed of the arrest and will continue to be supported and updated on the progress of our inquiry by specialist family liaison officers.”"

Her boyfriend at the time - Dr Phillip Kurlbaum was 33 in 1996, making him 53 now. The recent arrest was of a 45 year old, so, the Dr is still not a suspect. The suspect must have been 20 at the time. Hard to believe they would not have attacked women again since then.

I wonder what the item was the DNA was found on. If it was something like a cigarette butt, it might mean something or nothing

A 45-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murdering Melanie Hall, from Bradford Leigh, has been released without charge.

The man, who has not been identified, was arrested in June after voluntarily attending a police station in Wiltshire and asking to speak to the inquiry team.

[...]

Avon and Somerset Police said officers had concluded that the information given by the man does not take the inquiry any further.

I may be reading that wrong, but it seems like it could have been a false confession.

Melanie Hall disappeared 21 years ago, but her killer still hasn't been caught
Twenty one years ago Melanie Hall left a nightclub and was never seen again.

It was 13 years later a workman found her remains in woodland near Thornbury – ending so much uncertainty, but still leaving the family and friends without answers.

DNA advances have been made by detectives and some 10 people have been arrested over the years – but all have been released without charge.

A major appeal was launched on the 20th anniversary of the 25 year old’s disappearance and a massive £100,000 reward has been stumped up for information.
But her killer has still not be caught.

This case seems to be very difficult to solve I wonder if the police still consider Mark shillibier to be the prime suspect in her murder.

It would have to be someone else as the main suspect is supposedly a resident of Bath, which LB has never been... well not to my knowledge anyway. Thanks for the recent news reports Supernovae. :)
I know it's been a few years since you wrote this but been having a read up as the Chilenden case is being investigated again l. Levi Belfield had connections to Bath, he used to buy drugs from the club where Melanie went missing and work on the doors quite frequently. He has been spread around the country so it could be likely. However they said that they were building a new DNA profile from Melanie's remains but I can't see what happened with this. There seems to be no further information ruling him in or out of the murder. As a resident of Bath I grew up with Melanies posters everywhere and have thought of her often. I have grown up with her so to speak yet she remains the same age. I would really hope that they will eventually solve this. It gave me hope when they solved the murder of Melanie Road last year.

Serial killer Christopher Halliwell linked to unsolved murder of Melanie Hall

[...]

Former intelligence officer Clark believes Melanie’s abduction bears the hallmarks of Halliwell’s gruesome death spree.

He said: “The method and other evidence point towards Halliwell.

“There is ‘similar fact evidence’ linking Halliwell to the scene and they are compelling.

“I have sent my dossier to the police and they are looking into it.”

The teenager murdered as she left a party and a killer who may have struck again

June 30 2019
Man who tortured and killed teenage girl linked to two more murders
"He always protested his innocence - and maintains to this day that he is only behind bars because the police were 'out to get him'.

But twisted Marc Shillibier left a trail of destruction and heartbreak in his wake when he was convicted of the "barbaric and evil" murder of an 18-year-old girl.

The unemployed , who had lived an otherwise unremarkable life in a nondescript property in the Stoke area of Plymouth, had tortured and sexually abused teenager Rebecca Storrs after meeting her at a house party in her home town in Wales.

Divorced father-of-two Shillibier, who had also spent time living in Looe , confessed the murder to a friend in Cornwall and was arrested.

He was jailed for life in December 2000 and ordered to spend a minimum of 22 years locked up. His attempt at an appeal failed.

And since, he has been linked to two other high-profile murders."

"Shillibier was said to have confessed to a cellmate that he also killed Melanie Hall , a 25-year-old hospital worker whose body was found in a bin bag beside the M5 in 2012 - 13 years after she vanished from a nightclub in Bath.

The claim was later withdrawn - but it has not stopped Shillibier's name being linked with her still unsolved murder."

The starred-out word is a four-letter word beginning with th and ending with ug. Not what you might have thought! Note to US people: This is a commonplace and uncontroversial word in the UK. It is generally used to describe a violent bully, nothing more.
