It could also be anemia. My husbands sister has chronic anemia. Her eyes always look bruised underneath. The fact that they are thin and pale could also be signs of anemia, especially considering they were malnourished.

Looks like the entire eye is puffy as well as some minor bruising on the other eye. I hope you're correct though. For shame if they hit such a little child in the face.

So much to say:

1. The look of love as she stares at her youngest. Why her and not the rest?
2. A lot of her girls look so much like her when she was young. How can she torment her little mirror images? (Let alone anyone but you know what I mean)

I used the BK filing to arrive at the birth years as well. The other post you quoted... let's say we disagree.

In the BK filing at heavy.com, filed August 2011, they listed 11 dependents aged: aged 19, 17, 15, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 7, 6, 4. The oldest girl was not included and she was born in July 1988, age 23, making a total of 12.

Ancestry.com info was for the 5 oldest only. The ones I was guessing about are because we don't know their respective birth months to know exactly their ages right now in Jan 2018 or their birth months. The one who was 10 years old in Aug 2011 is now 17, and she is #8. Ages of boys in italics in 2011. We're all working together *hugs*

ETA: We also know that the oldest 7 are now adults over 18 in Jan 2018 - that would be those aged 23, 19, 17, 15, 13, 12, 11 back in Aug 2011; arriving at #8 who was 10 in 2011 and is now 17, plus 5 more children makes 6 minor children under 18. (that's how my math worked)

I find this case so perplexing and hard to get my head around. It's like when you know something is true but you just can't understand how that can be.

All those photos and videos will be used by the defense to try to prove they were normal. It would be almost better if they didn't exist at all. I seem to disagree with many here but.... if I didn't know everything that has gone down AND know the kids ages, I would look at those Elvis videos with a totally different lens. Yes the kids look skinny but I almost looked sick skinny as a kid and my eldest has my genes despite almost eating us out of house and home daily. My thought pattern with those videos, particularly the 2013 one, was that they were a happy family but just weird. Big, weird, unsocialised family. Now knowing the kids ages obviously changes my thought patterns significantly, but I can honestly see why Elvis didn't really pick anything amiss. Click on some of the other weddings at the Elvis chapel and everyone is a little weird. I reckon he saw weirdness almost by default. I think we have the benefit of knowledge and therefore see all the subtle signs that just would have been too subtle without the context.

I do wonder if things really rapidly escalated in the last 3 years. I really reckon the closer LT got to menopause the more mental she would have got (hormones and grieving the babies she couldn't keep popping out) and the more the family would have suffered. My best friend's mother was bipolar (not suggesting anyone is in this case) but when her mother was in a bad space things were REALLY bad, and probably would have bordered on abusive. But when she was good, she showed long patches of being loving. I wonder if it's possible these trips were when LT was in "a coping phase" and being less abusive. Time and time again you see kids forgive their parents for the most horrific treatment - because they just want to be loved. These smiles might be genuine, and they could definitely have been having happy moments. Of course, I could be totally wrong - just clutching at the hope that the siblings experienced snatches of happiness in their bleak lives.

That 2013 video haunts me because I am sorry to say, they did seem happy but weird. I am finding it so hard to marry those images up with the horror. My heart absolutely breaks for those 13 siblings and how ruined their lives are. It's just so, so sad.

I’ve said before, there will be only bible quotes, over and over again!

I thought the police indicated they are going to make for good evidence... Even just Bible verses could speak to their frame of mind if they chose them themselves.

Oh wow. Just had a memory. Years ago I moved to a new state where some lifelong friends had bought a house and we were going to live in it while fixing it up. Apparently people had been squatting there for many months, so you can guess the condition. One of the upstairs bedroom had a door leading outside. The door going from that room to the rest of the house had been secured shut with plywood and nails and such. It was painted oddly and we found Bible quotes written in various sizes and shapes, and the words, "don't forget" written in pencil, very subtly, and white paint near the floor. It was creepy as f. The neighbors said a lady and her kids were squatting there and the kids supposedly got sick of the meth heads and barricaded their door. Whatever had happened, it was bad and that was the most disgusting thing I've ever had to clean.

What was their end plan here? Like really what the heck were they going to do?Slowly kill them off? Then what? I don’t get it. Jmo. It’s sad that their reality in jail is still much better then what the kids went through.

So here's my 2 cents....

They look thin and there are as your kids are many thin and very thin kids that eat a ton, its genetics or whatever. I too don't think they look emaciated (as LE described when found them) in the video and I too think they look awkward, thin but not abused in the sense we are reading about them now. Others think they do look emaciated in the wedding video.

I think the hospital, LE and CPS will have pictures that show these kids vastly different looking than these photos for the prosecution. LE has also stated in the news that things "escalated" in the abuse. So I'm pretty sure they will have evidence to show that. idk

The only reference to adoption I can find is for the dogs. I think they may have misread or misunderstood. In addition, it is not a quick process to terminate parental rights, even if the parents are in jail charged with child abuse (see the Sherin Matthews case). I also think the children will need time to be treated and assessed before trying to find them an adoptive home. All moo, ime.

You are absolutely correct. Sometimes, parental rights that should be terminated are ultimately not terminated, while the children languish in foster care.

This however, is likely going to be treated as a special case as the parents are facing 96 years in prison and the abuse was so chronic and so extreme and is actually criminal torture. The older siblings can become guardians of the younger ones if they wish to go that route. They have so much healing to do of their own. It's awful. The younger ones, LT and DT's parental rights will have to be terminated. If they don't offer to give up their own parental rights, the court will have to go through the mandates outlined in ASFA. After 3 years, the state can move to involuntarily terminate their rights.

This case is above and beyond. It will be interesting to see how the courts handle it in relation to the children's rights (All children in the child welfare system have their own individual attorney as do the parents). All I know is that I wish only peace, love, happiness, healing and safety for every single one of them everyday for the rest of their lives.

Yes.Could be malnutrition or that her jeans are very large around her waist. Her hips aren't jutted out so that wouldn't explain anything like her stance making her appear larger. Her arms also seem to be out away from her stomach.

Ahh. Someone said up thread that the bankruptcy filing has a typo and that the first child was omitted. It’s been suggested that the first child was born in July 1998. ETA: I meant July 1988

Sorry- I think my posts (and my own uncertainty about accuracy) about the kids' ages, based on the bankruptcy docs, have contributed to confusion.

The Ancestry info matches some of the DOBs listed in the bankruptcy docs, most importantly, #2's. FWIW, discrepancies between bankruptcy & Ancestry DOB's seem to be no greater than a calendar year in any given case.

I don't believe there was necessarily a typo on the docs, but the first born was not listed, for whatever reason.

Here are the DOBs through 2011:

#4. 1996.
#5. 1998.
#6. 1999.
#7. 2000
#8. 2001.
#9. 2002.

To me it looks like she is standing with her weight off that hip, and her jeans are probably too big giving the top an odd shape. I do notice she has evidence of small breasts here.

They look skinny for sure but if I saw them out I wouldn't have paid much attention. I reckon it got much, much worse and that is why the 17yo felt it was now or never. The level of admiration I feel for her can't be described. I am positive she saved lives.
