January 2015:

A Surrey, B.C., woman accused of killing her eight-year-old daughter has been found fit to stand trial.
Lisa Batstone appeared in provincial court on Monday, where the results of a psychiatric assessment were released...

On her way out of the courtroom, Batstone waved and blew kisses to her family and then covered her mouth and cried.

Her lawyer says Batstone is severely depressed and will remain in a psychiatric hospital.

January 2015:

Batstone had suffered from mental health issues before her daughter's death, according to those who know her.

Her father, Barry Hamilton, told reporters Monday that his daughter has been depressed, but never officially diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a condition Hamilton says he has.

Her ex-husband, Gabe Batstone — Teagan's father — has said that Lisa Batstone had attempted suicide in the past.

December 2015:

The trial of a South Surrey mother charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of her eight-year-old daughter nearly one year ago is still nowhere near ready to be scheduled, the woman’s lawyer confirmed...

Lisa Deanne Batstone has been in custody at a psychiatric hospital since her daughter Teagan’s body was discovered in the back of a car in a cul-de-sac just south of Crescent Road last Dec. 10.

Following a court appearance a week later, at which a “fitness assessment” was ordered for Batstone, Sicotte told reporters that his client’s mental health was “a very serious concern” that cast doubt on whether a trial could proceed.

In January, however, Batstone was deemed fit to stand trial.

From December:

South Surrey mother's murder trial delayed

http://www.peacearchnews.com/news/405253976.html

The trial of a South Surrey mother charged with killing her eight-year-old daughter has been delayed.

Proceedings against Lisa Deanne Batstone are now scheduled to get underway in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster on Sept. 25, 2017 – nearly three years after the body of her daughter Teagan (pictured at left), a Grade 3 student at Rosemary Heights Elementary, was discovered in the back of a car in a cul-de-sac just south of Crescent Road (below).

The trial had initially been set for June 5-30, 2017.

My child was in Teagan's class and I had 2 play dates with Lisa and Teagan. Teagan was a lovely little girl.. full of life and spunk. A very happy child. Very gentle nature. I found Lisa to be "off". I got the sense that she(Lisa) really wanted to make friends and make connections - but her behaviours pushed people away and she had no insight into any of her behaviour.

She always presented herself as a struggling single mom often saying that even small contributions(teachers gifts, field trip money) were things she couldn't afford. I found out later that most of the things she said were lies. I remember the first time I spent time with her, everything was fine. I found that she seemed a bit needy and overly eager ... but that was fine. I thought she probably just didn't know a lot of people. The next time I got together with her she basically told me her whole life story including details of her divorce. I couldn't get a word in. It just wasn't pleasant... was too much drama for me hardly knowing her. I just made myself unavailable... and it was easy because I am truly busy. Later.. I found out that a lot of people did that because she was very emotionally needy and seemed to want to latch on to people she hardly knew.

I never saw her mistreat Teagan. It seemed to me that she loved her dearly, and I was floored when this happened. There was also a lot about her that I didn't know. My heart breaks for the family left behind. ...they're having to wait so long for the trial.. and they still don't know the details around Teagan's death. What a loss Teagan's death is. I have no doubt she would have done something amazing.. my guess would have been a caring professional(doctor, nurse, teacher). She is leaving a legacy however - her Dad and his family are now Teagan's Voice and they're advocating now for the safety and wellbeing of children.

South Surrey mother’s murder trial delayed again

http://www.surreynowleader.com/news/south-surrey-mothers-murder-trial-delayed-again/

In a brief appearance Thursday afternoon in BC Supreme Court in New Westminster, proceedings against Lisa Deanne Batstone were adjourned until the fall of next year, set for Sept. 10 to Oct. 5, 2018.

Editorial: The weight of justice delayed

http://www.cloverdalereporter.com/opinion/editorial-the-weight-of-justice-delayed/

The reason the delay was granted isn’t clear. There were objections; Crown counsel was not in favour.

What is clear is that now, answers that Teagan’s family and friends have been waiting for, including how she died, are still a long way off.

And whatever peace a trial has potential to offer – including for Batstone’s family – is even further away. The proceedings themselves are expected to take four weeks, and decisions are rarely made immediately after.

What the poster said was my experience as well. I distanced from Lisa as well due to same reasons after the class we were in together ended.

I found her phone number on a scrap of paper in a book cleaning out recently and came to look for an update. I am sorry the trial is delayed again. :(

My heart breaks for Teagans family. I follow her Dads page on Facebook but can’t being myself to post. From what I have read there - The courts and system failed Teagan so badly.

I wasn’t in touch for years before this and don’t even live in Canada anymore but still it haunts me that I knew her and knew Teagan and didn’t see signs even in the limited interaction years earlier.
