Police: 5-year-old child found dead in car

WATERFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut police are investigating what they are calling the untimely death of a 5-year-old boy whose body was found in a car.

Waterford Chief Brett Mahoney said officers were contacted about a missing child at about 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

Police found the child unresponsive about 19 minutes later in a family four-door sedan. Mahoney says it is unclear how long the child had been missing before police were contacted.

Emergency medical technicians attempted to revive the child but were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The state medical examiner’s office also responded to the scene.

The chief says police are trying to figure out how the boy got into the car.

No names were released.

Thank you for starting this thread! So tragic! I wonder if he was left in the vehicle by mistake or went to the car to retrieve something and was locked in by mistake. 5 is old enough typically to remove them self from the vehicle IMO.

Child was found dead in a "family car". I believe that refers to a vehicle owned by his family. Cause of death has not yet been determined. They do not know yet how long the child had been in the vehicle, how he got into the vehicle, or how long the child had been missing when he was reported missing.

On Thursday, May 3, 2018, the day he was reported missing and was found, the temps. in Waterford, CT were High: 73 and Low: 56 (F).

Oh man - my hinky meter is pinging. Those temps aren’t deadly TYPICALLY. [emoji20] thanks for the info (my app isn’t letting me view some of the links ::frustrated:: )

Unless the child was in the back seat and "childproof" locks were activated, so that someone would need to open the door from outside of vehicle? Just speculating.

I agree this is definitely possibility! I kept mine on until my kiddo was like, 6-7!

I find it odd that her child was missing and checking the car never occurred to her? I’d be checking entire house, yard, garage, car before I ever went to neighbors. Perplexing...

I think the wording is a bit off too. I took it as a larger family vehicle (van, suburban) not theirs that was close by.

I don’t think it’s too odd the mom went to the neighbors without checking nearby vehicles. If I found one of my kids missing I’d lose my mind and frantically search my house than start asking for help. I wouldn’t want to wait too long.

What I do find off is that he must have been missing for longer than a short time if he expired in the van from heat in lower temps. It just seems like that would take some time. But who knows how long she was looking for him before going to neighbors or calling LE.

The child had been home with his mother and he was last seen around 12:30 p.m., according to police, who said the mother was the initial caller and reported her son missing.

In a news release issued Thursday, police said officers were called to the home on Maple Avenue in Quaker Hill at 2:28 p.m. and 19 minutes later, after searching inside the home and out, they found the boy unresponsive in a family car.

Appears he was missing for about 2 hours before police were called.

That high temp can easily turn into 90+ degrees in a car pretty quickly actually.

It's very unlikely that he died from heat exposure. So why did he die if he was only 2 hours in the car?

I wonder whether something happened, he got trapped or something (thinking of Kyle Plush).

Was that the poor kid who got trapped between the back of minivan hatch and rear seat? Do we know if this was a mini-van as well?? That would be awful for sure :-(

It appeared to be a white sedan in the video posted earlier.

Parked cars get dangerously hot, even on cool days, Stanford study finds

https://med.stanford.edu/news/all-n...t-even-on-cool-days-stanford-study-finds.html

"There are cases of children dying on days as cool as 70 degrees Fahrenheit," said lead author Catherine McLaren, MD, clinical instructor in emergency medicine. Though past research has documented the temperature spike inside a car on extremely hot days, this is the first time anyone has looked at cooler days, she added.

a car's interior can heat up by an average of 40 degrees F within an hour, regardless of ambient temperature. Eighty percent of the temperature rise occurred within the first half-hour.

We need more information about if the car was in sun or shade, garage or outdoors, and tinted windows or not. Primarily because those tinted windows can increase heat.
Then we would need to know why the child was unable to get back out of the vehicle once inside. 5 typically can get out of a seatbelt. Was child lock engaged? Did they not try to come out via the front doors? Where in the car was child found or were they buckled in?
Did the child get left in vehicle or did child go into vehicle to retrieve something and become trapped?
So many questions but I assumed (you know what they say about assumptions lol) it would take a bit to get that hot in those temps unless in direct sun and tinted windows. But I trust that you’ve probably actually searched this so we can roll with it as I’ve got no real knowledge on that area.
So my question to you would then be, how long of 90deg temp would it take a normal healthy child to die in that temp? Could this 2hrs have been enough?
Thanks so much for your comment!
