Det. Melton: EPD followed up on thousands of leads, checking more than 200 locations, and finding 7 bodies that had been missing from other deceased people. They also checked unidentified bodies found throughout the surrounding states. Aleah was found in an vacant home in March.

Melton: Autopsy conducted next day. Due to decomposing of body, Det. Melton’s says he couldn’t identify it was her just by looking.

Melton: He was present at autopsy. Aleah was identified by implant, shirt she was wearing and several other aspects.

Melton: Says Demarco Roach, who was in relationship with Aleah’s mother, is Terrence Roach’s father.

Jury watching video of Det. Melton’s interview with Roach now.

In interview, Melton asks Roach how he went in window to take Aleah.

Roach tells Melton that Cara (Aleah’s mom) used to babysit him occasionally. He says he last saw Cara in June 2016, a month prior to disappearance.

Jurors still watching Det. Melton’s second interview with Roach. We can’t see the video from where we’re sitting.

Taking brief recess.

and that's all there is.... I looked at their own twitter pages and nothing after the brief recess. :dunno:

Tuesday, May 22nd:
*Trial continues (Day 2) (@ 8am CT) - IN - Aleah Beckerle (19) disabled (July 16, 2016) - Terrence Wayne Roach indicted (7/17/16) on 3 counts of felony murder, burglary w/bodily harm, criminal confinement, abuse of corpse & kidnapping from home & taken to abandoned home; plead not guilty; no bond.

Why did he kill her?

And wow. Finding 7 other bodies during that time period, insane.

Sent from my SM-T580 using Tapatalk

If memory serves, he got high on synthetic pot and the idea to kill her just popped into his head. I know that sounds rather ridiculous but it's the only motive I've seen.

Re: the 7 other bodies - yep - totally insane but a lot of closure for many other families so that's a very good thing.

Here's what I have copied down for you all! Don't know if it's a repeat - :)

Terrence Roach just walked in to the courtroom for the second day of his murder trial. He is accused of kidnapping and killing Aleah Beckerle in 2016. Follow me for updates from inside the courtroom. @14News

Grampp (Defense attorney) is asking the judge for a mistrial. @14News

The judge denies the motion for a mistrial.

The jurors are filing in. They’ll start by watching a video of Roach’s statements in an interview with Det. Melton. In the recording, we’re hearing a phone conversation between Roach and his mom. @14News

Roach tearfully to his mom on phone: it didn’t go the way he planned. He planned on taking Aleah for a couple days to get back at her mom. He believed Aleah’s mom set up his dad (arrested a month prior). Roach: “I didn’t plan on killing her...she died on her own.” @14News

Roach tells his mom that the idea to kidnap Aleah popped into his head that day when he was high on drugs. Again, he said he thought Aleah’s mom set up his dad. He was arrested a month prior for shooting inside their home. @14News

Grampp is cross-examining Melton. He asked to recap the shots fired run made to the house a month prior as well as the day he responded to Aleah being missing. Grampp is asking about the thousands of man power used in the search. He asked if it put Melton under pressure @14News

Grampp asks Melton if he really believes Roach did what he’s accused of doing. Melton says he whole heartedly does. @14News

Grampp is having Melton show the jurors three photos of the area in Aleah’s home where her bedroom was and the neighboring room with the couch where her mom was sleeping the night Aleah was taken from her bedroom. They demonstrate the distance between the couch and room. @14News

No one woke up while Aleah was kidnapped. There was also no door separating the rooms. Grampp & Melton agree that the window in Aleah’s bedroom that Roach says he pulled Aleah out of that night is narrow. @14News

Melton says crime scene reported to him that all windows in Aleah’s home were locked & no signs of forced entry. Melton says he noticed Aleah’s bedroom window blinds were disturbed but dismissed it. Melton believes Roach’s head hit the blinds when he reached in for Aleah. @14News

Melton’s testimony is over. The State is calling it’s 2nd witness, EPD Det. Phil Luecke. @14News

Hoffman is talking about the DNA testing process. She says she tested the duct tape found near Aleah’s head. It is a match with Roach’s DNA swab. Hoffman says there is a 1-in-8 trillion chance that match is inaccurate. @14News

Hoffman tested a cigarette butt found as evidence. She says the DNA matches Roach with a 1-in-8 trillion chance its inaccurate. @14News

Hoffman’s testimony is over. The State now calls EPD Det. Jeff Hands. He’s worked with EPD for 20 years. @14News

State showing pictures to jury of Aleah’s room taken April 2, 2017, the day Roach was interviewed by detectives.

In pictures, Hands demonstrates reaching through window and touching Aleah’s bed.

Playing jail phone call now between Terrence Roach and his mother. Asks his mom to delete Facebook account.

In phone call, Roach asks his mom to send family pictures.

More phone call: Roach says he wants out. Doesn’t want to go to prison. Mom says he’ll probably need to claim insanity, not in right frame of mind, etc.

Phone call: Mom reads charges to Roach. Mom asks him if there’s death penalty in IN. Roach says he’ll probably get that or life without parole.

In call, mom asks Roach what he was going to do with Aleah. Asks if she needed medication. He said he put tape on her mouth so she wouldn’t yell.

Roach says he didn’t tell anyone about what he did except detective.

Court is dismissed for the day. We will resume at 8:30 Wednesday morning. @14News

We’re starting Day 3 of Roach’s trial. The State calls Dr. James Jacobi to the stand. He is the forensic pathologist who conducted the autopsy on Aleah’s body. @14News

The jury is seeing photos from Aleah’s autopsy. @14News

Kate didn't have much in between her tweets and found this guy tweeting adding more info.

The jury is looking at autopsy photos of Aleah. Jacobi is describing Aleah as "mummified." Her body weighed 17 pounds.

Jacobi says he found no broken bones, stab wounds, or bullet holes. Likely cause of death is suffocation. He can't say when she died.

·
Dr. Jacobi says the serial number of the shunt in the body matched the number the manufacturer gave for the shunt inserted in Aleah. The body had no broken bones. @14News

Dr. Jacobi says he can’t confirm when the body died, but he can says the condition of the body was consistent with months. @14News

Dr. Jacobi says he can not determine Aleah’s cause of death or where she died. The autopsy also couldn’t tell whether or not duct tape was involved. He says the condition of the body without intact skin made it impossible to tell see tape residue. @14News

Stuart Hammer
@StuEyewitness
·
During Grampp's questioning, Jacobi reveals his official autopsy report lists the cause of death as "undetermined." He told the jury during state's questioning it was "likely" she suffocated.

Jacobi is off the stand.

We are taking a short recess. The Judge explained to Roach his rights to testify or not. Grampp is now consulting with Roach. We will see if he will take the stand. @14News

The State is finished calling witnesses. Roach has declined to testify. @14News

Stuart Hammer
@StuEyewitness
·
The prosecution has rested. Hermann expects the jury will start deliberation at some point today.

Kate O'Rourke
@Kate14News
·
The defense is now calling its first witness Tony Walker. He retired from EPD in September 2016. He had worked in the Crime Scene Unit for 25 years. @14News

Walker says when he arrived at Aleah’s home the day she was reported missing he immediately started taking photos to capture the scene in that moment. He says he took 700-800 photos that first day. He returned the next day to take photos of documents/items in the trash. @14News

We’re hearing for the first time that a bathroom window was left open that night. Walker says he found no evidence indicating that someone had entered through that window. He says there was no disturbance. @14News

Grampp is asking Walker about Aleah’s bedroom window. Walker says both windows in her bedroom were locked when he arrived. He saw no signs of damage. The blinds and decorations on the blinds were undisturbed. Aleah’s mom said nothing looked different in the room. @14News

After Walker retired but received new information in the investigation he went back and looked at photos. He says he saw that one of Aleah’s bedroom windows wasn’t locked. Part of the lock was in tact. Part was not. @14News

The State is cross-examining Walker. Walker says he crawled through the tall grass in the back years of Aleah’s home and left no marks. The lack of disturbed grass was a point Grampp made in his questioning. @14News

Walker has been dismissed. The defense calls its next witness EPD Det. William Arbaugh. @14News

Stuart Hammer
@StuEyewitness
·
Walker tells the jury the first officers on scene told him there were no signs of forced entry into the Beckerle home the day Aleah was reported missing.

As he investigated outside Aleah's bedroom window, Walker noticed a piece of broken fence, but the chunk of wood was covered by leaves. He saya that indicates it was broken for some time before Aleah disappeared.

Walker says despite the windows of Aleah's bedroom being in the locked position they were still able to be opened.

Walker has finished testifying. Grampp calls William Arbaugh, an EPD officer who canvassed the area around the Beckerle house the day after Aleah disappeared.

Just a few questions to Arbaugh about trash found in a container that was similar to trash found at Beckerle house. He's off the stand.

Kate O'Rourke
@Kate14News
·
Grampp asked Arbaugh about the protein drinks that were found in the trash cans at Aleah’s home. The State had no further questions. Arbaugh was dismissed. @14News

We are in another recess. We expect to hear final instructions for the jury soon. After that, they go into deliberations. @14News

We're taking a short break. The defense is preparing to call Roach's mom, Dawn Eastwood to the stand. We heard her voice yesterday on a phone call Roach made from the jail after confessing to detectives.

Eastwood will not take the stand. Instead the defense rests and the judge will now read final instructions to the jury after another short recess.

The judge is now reading the jury his final instructions before the lawyers give their closing arguments.

Roach faces 3 counts of murder. Two of those have aggravating factors of murder with intent of kidnapping, and murder with intent of rape. In addition, he has four other felony charges.

The jury has it's instructions and closing arguments will come after lunch.

Roach is heading back to the courtroom for closing arguments.

The prosecution is showing clips from Roach's confession to Det. Melton. The state is retelling the jury how it alleges the crime was committed.

The prosecution suggests the jury has all the questions in the case answered by Roach's own admission. The State has finished closing arguments.

Grampp tells the jury during his closing "the state's approach to this case is pathetic. It's like pushing a square peg into a round hole."

Grampp calls into question the validity of Roach's confession because it came hours into an interview without a lawyer. He also questions the tip that came from jail.

Grampp summarizes the case saying the evidence doesn't support what the state says happened.

Grampp talks about the protein drinks moved from the porch to the trash the day after Aleah went missing. He says “someone in that home knew she wasn’t coming home.” @14News

Grampp is asking the jury to decide Roach is not guilty on all accounts. He says if they convict Roach, the search for what happened to Aleah will be over. That concludes his closing statements. @14News

One hour of closing arguments is over and now the jury is going to deliberate. @14News

In the final word to the jury, Hermann is touching on emotion of the case. It's drawing tears from the family.

Hermann: "Imagine what it was like to be Aleah Beckerle. You don't duct tape the mouth of someone giggling."

The jury now has the case. No telling how long it will take. I'll update when there's something new.

and..... we are on Verdict Watch! Which started at 9:45pm EET (that's Eastern European Time) - so 1:45 Central Time.

2 hours into deliberations (so, about 3:35 CT):

Stuart Hammer
@StuEyewitness
·
The jury has a question for the court about how long they should deliberate for the night. Everyone was called back in to make a decision. It's decided the court has no opinion. It's up to the jury.

The jury also asked if they could review some of the recordings. The judge will think about it a minute and give the jury a written answer.

The jury is back in their room to continue deliberating.

The prosecutor told me the jury is going to watch and listen to about 2 hours of recordings that were played in court the first two days. Obviously that means a verdict is still a ways away.

I've been pretty busy trying to get my reports filed for the newscasts, but the jury has been in the courtroom for the last 1.5 hours reviewing video of Roach's apparent confession. Everyone has been locked out of the hallway and courtroom while they do that.

The sun is setting at the Vanderburgh County Courts building. Still no movement from the jury. The hall remains locked.

The judge and a court employee just walked in with 6 boxes of pizza and a bag of soft drinks. That's usually a signal there's lots of deliberation ahead. It smelled delicious.

As we approach 10 o'clock, the jury is still deliberating. It's their case and their decision. They've been going since about 8 this morning and so have most of us here at the courthouse.

Prosecutor Nick Hermann just walked back into the courts building. It's possible a verdict is close. Also possible the jury just has a question.

Hermann walked in about 15 minutes ago and there's been no movement since. At the front desk, I can see a security camera monitor pointed down the judicial corridor where the jury is, and it's been quiet.

I mean no disrespect with this, but the night is beginning to get the feeling of a grade school lock-in sleep over. Everyone is wondering around the courts building trying to figure out what to do. Just need sleeping bags.

We've eclipsed the 10 hour mark since the jury first started deliberating. The hallway leading to the courtroom is still locked.

This last post was made 22 minutes ago - so I would have to guess that it is - 12:45AM (after midnight there)!!!

Now the tweet says "3 hours ago" -

Terrence Roach found NOT GUILTY of murder.

Roach guilty of criminal confinement and guilty of abuse of a corpse.

Roach is not guilty of 5 counts he faced. Three counts of murder he was found not guilty.

The Beckerle family is breaking down in the courtroom.

Court is adjourned and now the Beckerle family is yelling and screaming in the courtroom.

Many members of the prosecution are stunned by the verdict. Det. Brent Melton is visibly shaken. He was lead investigator in the case. The family is still screaming in the courtroom.

Thank you so much for compiling all that info, Niner!

I am kinda shocked that he was found not guilty of murder even though I was pretty sure he didn't kill her, I wasn't sure what the jury was going to think especially when shown a confession by him. But obviously, they saw through the charade and found him not guilty. When the jury asked to review the tapes during deliberation, I should have seen it coming. I haven't seen the tapes but my guess is that the detective did a lot of leading.

Did you all watch the 14 News video when they were waiting for a verdict? The family was going absolutely nuts, screaming and cursing, after the verdict was read. And a lot of obvious fake crying by some of the people they showed. Crazy.

I hope that someday we find out the truth about what happen to Aleah.

Me, too. I hope that LE continue to investigate. What I fear is that the DA’s office and LE are going to say something along the lines of “We know we had the right guy, and the jury got it all wrong,” and will not look at other possibilities. That wouldn’t be fair to Aleah.

A couple of things that stood out to me in particular:

So Det. Melton testified that Aleah’s body was found after he interviewed a jail inmate and got a search warrant based on what he was told. IIRC, it was reported a woman (whose boyfriend, it was later revealed, was in jail at the time) came across the remains while scavenging abandoned houses. She even received the reward money. So ... what’s the real story?

This is the first time I am hearing Aleah’s protein drinks were found out on the porch the day after she went missing? I wonder how the family explained this to LE.

They were actually in the trash according to this article: Terrence Roach found not guilty of murder

I really want to know the answer to this too. Very smart of the defense attorney to bring this up during the trial.

So Aleah is dead. Still no one held accountable. Does the jury feel she died on her own? Or that the prosecution just didn't prove who killed or how she died? I wonder what the thinking was? Without seeing the trial, it's hard to say why the jury felt the way they did.

So they think he found her body and abused her corpse but isn’t the one that killed her? I don’t agree or disagree with that, just want to make sure I understand the verdict.

ETA: was Aleah’s mom in the courtroom or is she in jail for the drug
Charges?

They probably believe something along the lines of what his defense attorney stated:

"What I think is that some time on the evening of July 16 or early July 17 (2016), Aleah Beckerle died as a result of neglect by her mother and someone removed her from the house," Grampp said. "I think Cara Beckerle was afraid she would get in trouble. I think Terrence and/or others removed the body, and Cara Beckerle reported her missing not realizing it would get all the attention it would get."

"I think the jury believed he was involved. I don't think they thought he killed her."

Source: Jury wouldn't 'close book' on Aleah Beckerle murder case, Terrence Roach attorney says

Aleah's mother was in the courtroom when the verdict was read but I am not sure if she attended the entire trial. I know she was released from jail in early May.

I don't know... if Aleah was already deceased when TR removed her from the house, wouldn't he be shouting from the rooftops that she was already deceased?

I 100% believe it's entirely possible she died right there in that house as a direct result of neglect, but I can't see TR taking the blame for something he didn't do, especially if it meant a very long time in prison.

Unless... I'm missing a huge piece of this nasty, ugly puzzle.

My understanding is that TR is not all there mentally. Look up Indiana case # 82D02-1307-FB-00929.

It shows a history of mental illness as his mother submitted mental health records. It also appears that he took a plea where he had to testify against his co-defendants. The rumor is that he was talked into participating in this crime and then set up to take the fall. Sounds like what may have happened with Aleah.

According to the article jessarox cited:

“Roach was found guilty on two other charges, one count of criminal confinement resulting in serious bodily injury and one count of abuse of a corpse.”

In Indiana:

Sec. 3 . (a) A person who knowingly or intentionally confines another person without the other person's consent commits criminal confinement. Except as provided in subsection (b), the offense of criminal confinement is a Level 6 felony.

Sec. 2 . A person who knowingly or intentionally:

(3) opens a casket with the intent to commit an act described in subdivision (1) or (2);

commits abuse of a corpse, a Level 6 felony.”

Indiana Code Title 35. Criminal Law and Procedure § 35-45-11-2 | FindLaw

In addition to the murder charges, he was also found not guilty on “one count of burglary with serious bodily injury and one count of kidnapping with serious bodily injury.”

Sec. 1 . A person who breaks and enters the building or structure of another person, with intent to commit a felony or theft in it, commits burglary, a Level 5 felony.  However, the offense is:

(C) is committed on an aircraft”

Indiana Code Title 35. Criminal Law and Procedure § 35-42-3-2 | FindLaw

It seems to me the jury did not believe he was ever inside or at Aleah’s house.

And yes, Cara was there to hear the verdict:

“Supporters and family of both Beckerle and Roach were in the same area waiting for the verdict.

Beckerle's family and friends were shocked to hear Roach was found guilty of two felonies but not felony murder or kidnapping. More than one person burst into tears when they heard the verdict.

Her mother Cara Beckerle broke down crying and screaming after the jury left the courtroom.

‘What the (expletive) happened?’ she asked.”

Terrence Roach found guilty of abuse of a corpse, not murder in Aleah Beckerle case

Curious, in your opinion (and I know you've followed this closer than anyone), just how involved you think TR actually was, and how much was fabricated.
